Summary: New Year's Eve Party
The Story:

[ Previously in the month all residents received an invitation to a formal event: a black tie affair to ring in the New Year. The ballroom and adjacent areas are decked out for the party starting at eight o'clock sharp, meticulously planned and executed, glittering décor to match the no doubt glittering attire as music pours into the halls from the dance floor.

Bars flank each side, service for all manner of alcohol unless a minor requests something, and the primary setting stage features an enormous clock for the countdown. ]




[ Where will you be when the clock strikes midnight? ]

I'm British, [ she answers with a smile -- knowing damn well it's both evident and obvious. ] And as children we're reared on a diet of understatement and custard creams.

[ it's not the funniest joke she's ever made, but she seems proud of it. ]

I'll keep that in mind, Miss Carter. [ it's definitely far from the funniest joke he's ever heard, but it does get a chuckle. and it's not even a pity laugh! ]

A little different than Gotham, where a lot of the residents subsist on a healthy diet of blunt honesty, especially when it comes to pointing out how terrible of a situation you find yourself in.

I confess I haven't the foggiest idea where 'Gotham' is.

[ although she certainly does recall him claiming to be a part of its police force, hence his title. ]

You and quite a few other people, by the sound of it. It's in the northeastern United States. Seems like it doesn't exist in everyone's version of the US though. [ it's been a few weeks and he still feels absolutely ridiculous saying that sentence ]

It's a city infested with and run by criminals. So if it's not in your world, or it is and you just haven't heard of it, you're not missing much. [ and yet there's a definitely fondness in his tone. even if the city's done little else but beat him down and try to corrupt him like it's done to almost everyone else, it's still home ]

Considering I live in the northeastern United States, Detective, I'm going to step out on a limb and suggest that it can't possibly exist in mine.

[ she doesn't smile -- but there's something ghosting there behind her attention. ]

If it did? Well. Based on your description, I'm certain I would have heard tell of it.

In that case, you're probably right. I'm pretty certain you would have heard of it too, since it doesn't often escape notice if you're near enough.

[ when he's done with it, gotham will be known for something more positive. mark his words ]

Unless you'd really like to hear more though, I'm sure we can find something else to talk about aside from Gotham.

[ truth is, she always wants to hear more. but she knows better than to push a button that someone is actively trying to keep out of her reach -- or, at least, she knows better than to do so while they're all here under the auspices of a decent little party. peggy's nose crinkles in a polite little demonstration of acceptance. ]

It's either that or the vagaries of Wonderland itself. [ and so! ] How did you weather your first event? Admittedly, it was something of a mild one.

[ and he would be perfectly fine with telling her more, but he figures maybe she doesn't want to hear much more about a place that doesn't even exist where she's from. maybe she's just a little too polite to say it so he's giving her an out! ]

And here, I was hoping that was as bad as they got. [ you're not the only one with jokes, miss carter! ] I'll be honest, it was certainly an interesting way to be introduced to this place.

It seems we can't escape the storybooks. [ a light hum. ] Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Hansel and Gretel, all of it -- what a nasty spin it puts on old bedtime stories.

Nasty spin indeed. You know, this place isn't at all really helping my overall feelings on all these classic fairy tales.
