Summary: New Year's Eve Party
The Story:

[ Previously in the month all residents received an invitation to a formal event: a black tie affair to ring in the New Year. The ballroom and adjacent areas are decked out for the party starting at eight o'clock sharp, meticulously planned and executed, glittering décor to match the no doubt glittering attire as music pours into the halls from the dance floor.

Bars flank each side, service for all manner of alcohol unless a minor requests something, and the primary setting stage features an enormous clock for the countdown. ]

[Oh, it is indeed quite new, and equally concerning. No comment on his greeting, no wry joke about how Rip really should learn to not speak like a robot one of these days. He frowns lightly as he watches Tony toy with the tumbler, but do nothing else by way of greeting.

They are not friends; not even close. But at times, Rip can at least act like a decent human being.]

Has something happened?

[ in all honesty, tony liked it better when people outright disliked him. it was easier to navigate than all of this. now, he's bearing through the night for evie's sake ( and out of fear of her ire ) and he's doing small talk. or he's attempting to. it's not easy when one is in the delicate place between hung over and drunk.

pepper would force a flute of water into his hand on nights like these. she'd force him off the chair and onto the dancefloor. but pepper isn't here. rhodey isn't, either. hell, tony would settle for steve rogers just so he can have someone to be properly pissed off at. ]

Nothing.

[ and it troubles him too. he preferred it when the pocket universe was trying to kill them. this supposed peace and quiet is even worse. he's suddenly very aware that the man is watching him. ]

...what. my tie isn't straight?

...I'm rather well acquainted with what misery looks like, Mr. Stark.

[Perhaps it's a path not wisely pursued, yet Rip speaks the words all the same. They are surrounded by those who would celebrate in spite of all Wonderland has them endure, that would take this time to find some measure of happiness regardless of the anguish of their own lives, and Tony instead sits alone, largely silent, with alcohol as his one constant companion.

Oh, but Rip is familiar with that brand of agony indeed.]

[ he arches his eyebrow up, up up and tilts his head. ]

yeah?

[ and? there's some things tony stark would do and some that would be up there with creating another utlron. one of them is the path he feels he is being ushered to. ]

we are not having this conversation.

[ no way. not even if he's utterly drunk. ]

Which is no doubt for the best. I'm not exactly the sort of person known for offering comfort in times of need.

[And Tony and Rip have had a rocky co-existence to say the very least. The pause stretches onward as Rip at last has opportunity to order a glass of rum, neat and thank you before he once more looks to the man beside him.]

But there are much quieter places to drink.
