Summary: New Year's Eve Party
The Story:

[ Previously in the month all residents received an invitation to a formal event: a black tie affair to ring in the New Year. The ballroom and adjacent areas are decked out for the party starting at eight o'clock sharp, meticulously planned and executed, glittering décor to match the no doubt glittering attire as music pours into the halls from the dance floor.

Bars flank each side, service for all manner of alcohol unless a minor requests something, and the primary setting stage features an enormous clock for the countdown. ]

It's more than ok. I really like it.

[ it's a quiet, earnest assurance. it didn't take him too long to realize he's just fine with being someone's dad. it would have been nice to tell lois about it. but then again, if she wasn't here, at least clark was. ]

I'll cover the tables on the left side.

[kryptomight]

I'll meet you on the roof, Dad!

( his voice is a little higher than before, tone more than excited as he takes off--maybe a bit faster than he should be going, hitting just barely into being inhumanly fast. but he's gathering treats and sweets from the tables, piling up plates and piling plates on top of those plates to take with him to he roof. )

[rectitudes]

[ they make for a domestic scene. a pile of plates filled with foods and sweets on one side, a stash of fireworks on the other. clark brings those with him and looks at their choice of snacks. ]

nice work.

[ maybe he should feel a bit guilty. people could have used all that food but one thing that doesn't seem to be a problem here is supply. ]

alright. should we try one?

[kryptomight]

( jon could scarf all of this down and then some--he's a growing boy, he'll finish it off without a problem. so it's not as if any of it is going to waste.

he has a few sparklers in hand, shoves the non-explosive covered end into his back pocket so he can grab onto one of the bigger fireworks and set it towards the far end of the rooftop. )

I'm not allowed to light them, so you can!

( listen he hasn't had a chance to celebrate new years since developing heat vision. and invulnerability. he's fought hell hounds, but no one's given him permission to light stuff on fire!! )

[rectitudes]

You should the countdown, then.

[ this is all a learning experience. clark has some instincts but on the whole, the parenting experience is something he lets grow on him. he keeps reminding himself, no fire, right, and maybe he should have thought of it but all of this is new and he's still overwhelmed by the thought that in some world, he and lois created a little person and -- ]

how about it? from ten?

Hehe. . I'm ten.

( clearly that's the important thing to take away here, right? he sits himself down a safe distance away from the fireworks, palms down against the roof and starts: )

Nine. . eight, seven, sixfivefourthreetwo--

When's your birthday?

[ the most information at the moment, okay. there's no way clark might miss his son's birthday. but, countdown first. ]

One -

[ and the sky lights up. a blast of pink and green and blue lights. clark smiles and puts a hand on jon's shoulder. this is good. this is easy. ]

not bad, right?

( the sky lights up and jon's eyes light up along with it, focused on the flashes of sparks above them. there are some things that never quite get old--and this is definitely one of them. clark's hand rests on his shoulder, so jon--shifts his hand out to grab onto the hem of his shirt, holding on tight. )

It's amazing. And uh--my birthday's February 24th. So it's coming up soon!

You'll be eleven. that's pretty big.

[ it's not going to be the same. clark isn't the right version of himself but he's going to be there nonetheless. he'll have to think of a good idea for a present, too. ]

what do you think we should spent it?

[kryptomight]

I haven't really thought about it. Back home, Mom'd make a cake and put candles on it and we'd have over some family friends and I'd open some presents. . like action figures and t-shirts and stuff.

( he's sure time doesn't work the same way here, either. which is super weird and he's really not that fond of it. )

We don't really age here at all either. Like I lost a tooth just after I got here, and the new one still hasn't grown in! ( considering how it was knocked out not--just fell, there's probably a little more to it than that, but. ) And I haven't outgrown any of my clothes, but I was growing really fast before.

[rectitudes]

It's still a birthday and hey, I'm not your mom but I know how to bake my mom's famous chocolate cake.

[ said as he moves over to grab one of the plates. it's a good thing he remembers that old recipe. it's going to be much better than just asking wonderland for a cake. ]

cake. presents. maybe something nice to eat for dinner. burgers?

That's what Mom would make--one of Ma's cake recipes.

( definitely getting psyched for this birthday party now, thanks. while he's never met his grandparents, he's heard enough about them to really appreciate them. and the cakes are good. )

I like burgers. We can barbecue!

We can definitely do that.

[ and it doesn't sound like something he'll feel like he's intruding on. it sounds just right. ]

start thinking of people you'd like to invite.

( it sounds like a good time to him--and he definitely wasn't planning on parties before. not ones like this. )

[ look, it has to be said. ]

when I met her, she looked - excitable.

( the more the merrier. he likes emily well enough, from how much he had spoken to her. )
