Summary: New Year's Eve Party
The Story:

[ Previously in the month all residents received an invitation to a formal event: a black tie affair to ring in the New Year. The ballroom and adjacent areas are decked out for the party starting at eight o'clock sharp, meticulously planned and executed, glittering décor to match the no doubt glittering attire as music pours into the halls from the dance floor.

Bars flank each side, service for all manner of alcohol unless a minor requests something, and the primary setting stage features an enormous clock for the countdown. ]

[Emma may have needed to be talked into attending, but despite her growing up bouncing around between foster homes, she's not entirely without manners. She has Freya point out the hostess to her early in the evening, and she chooses to approach when Evie appears to have a few moments alone, not far from where drinks are being served.]

Hi-- it's Evelyn, isn't it?

[She smiles a little, uncertain.]

I was told we have you to thank for putting this on. Thank you.

[The voice she recognises is shocking in its familiarity, and for a brief moment Evelyn appears as an animal startled when the woman with blonde hair approaches her near the bar. How long has it been? Too long for the other party to remember, made more apparent by her introductory comments. Months. Over a year. Too long.

Emma.]

It is, yes.

[Evelyn collects herself swiftly, slipping into her hostessing seamlessly. One might think that after so many interactions like this, she would have become accustomed to the shock of having a once-friendly face look through her.]

And I appreciate the gratitude, though it isn't necessary. I'm happy to do it, Ms. Swan.

[Emma has been here for weeks now, long enough to find herself forced to suspend disbelief to a certain extent-- especially as its become more and more obvious that the people she's met here that claim to know her actually seem to. Too many of them know things that they couldn't have unless she had told them herself, and the reaction that she gets from Evelyn is enough to tip her off to the fact that she might have just walked into yet another one of those awkward situations.

At this point, she's honestly starting to feel guilty. She can't imagine having this many friends and then simply forgetting them. They had never been easy to come by, for her.

Her smile pulls just a bit tighter, knowing. Evelyn covers well, but she still caught that initial startle.]

You know my name.

[A lot of people seem to.]

I'm guessing we knew each other?

[She hopes Evelyn was a friend, at least, and not someone she'd managed to piss off. That was also a possibility.]

[Evelyn does not believe that those whose memories are wiped should feel guilty in any capacity, at all. Very frequently she will regret not being able to afford them the clean slates they deserve, caught in a web of Wonderland's making where they are remembered by some in vastly different ways with no recollections to assuage their fears.]

It would be disingenuous for me to pretend otherwise.

[Additionally, she is an abominable liar and someone as insightful as Emma would have been able to tell that something was off. Rather sympathetically, Evelyn smiles at her.]

We knew each other very well. I'm sorry to put you in a position of this nature - I realise most people do not like for strangers to know them.

[Emma shakes her head quickly-- this is far from the first instance of this she's encountered, and she has a feeling it won't be the last. At least this time, she's prepared for it.]

You're not the first person to say so. Not just from Wonderland, either.

[She has people from home, supposedly, who seem to know all about her-- and she doesn't recognize a single one of them.]

You don't have anything to apologize for. [A very different tune than the one she'd been singing on her first day.] And I know it's... not easy, to see someone you know and not have them remember. I've been seeing a lot of that since I got here.
