Summary: New Year's Eve Party
The Story:

[ Previously in the month all residents received an invitation to a formal event: a black tie affair to ring in the New Year. The ballroom and adjacent areas are decked out for the party starting at eight o'clock sharp, meticulously planned and executed, glittering décor to match the no doubt glittering attire as music pours into the halls from the dance floor.

Bars flank each side, service for all manner of alcohol unless a minor requests something, and the primary setting stage features an enormous clock for the countdown. ]

[At least he doesn't openly object to the company. Now he has it, he finds it's not altogether unwelcome. He shifts in his seat and brings his elbow up onto the table, the ice in his glass clinking again.]

Somehow. It was in the... fourth century that the church decided to celebrate the birth of Christ with a twelve day feast at that time of year. [Even the devil can quote scripture, and Crowley knows his history.]

They planned it to coincide with Sol Invictus.

Ahh. So they just conveniently placed it at the same time, so that the people they were trying to convert wouldn't lose any of their favorite celebrations.

[She laughs softly.]

How transparent of them.

Transparent, yes, but look how wonderfully it worked. [He tilts his glass to her, an idle 'cheers' gesture.]

I missed most of the conversions in that era, I was in China at the time, but it's the same every time something like that happens.

[She nods a bit.]

I slept through most of it. I just woke up one year and Christianity was a "thing."

[She'll even draw the air quotes.]

[Crowley smirks, finding he can't quite help the expression. It's always so refreshing to meet people who are close to being as old as he is.]

It did seem that way, didn't it?

[This demon might be in the Bible, but the events of the Old Testament pre-date Christianity.]

Jesus would be spinning in his grave, if he'd actually stayed in it.

[For Freya, that expression is a bit more literal as she used to take hundred year naps, but she'll let him think it seems that way for now.]

Don't think he would be a fan of the commercialism? Or would he be agreeing with those people on TV who think there's a "war" on Christmas.

[There is liberal use of air quotes there.]

Never met him personally. [They left that one to the boss. Jesus was off-limits as far as tempting was concerned, and nobody was going to cross that line.]

But I think he'd hate the entire idea of it.

From what I've heard, he wasn't really one for celebrating himself, or materialism for that matter.

[It doesn't seem like Christmas would be his jam, no.]

Right.

[It might be the alcohol, but he likes her already.]

After that show he put on in the temple, why does anyone think he'd approve of a holiday that's become little more than a push for people to bankrupt themselves.

[She gives a small shrug.]

Because people are greedy creatures at heart. It all depends on what they're greedy for.

[A soft snort escapes him.]

They are, and you know what the best thing about it is? They didn't even need any prodding to get that way. Honestly-- [He waves a hand, which happens to be the hand his glass is in. A little sloshes over the side and he looks at it like it simply shouldn't have happened.]

Oh, sorry. [Anyway.] Honestly, they do it all on their own. Mostly.

Oh, I'm sure.

[People react to their circumstances, but you'd be surprised how intrinsically self-focused people can be.]

They just need the right incentive.

Exactly, and they come up with that all on their own, too. No input from people like me required.

[And you'd think that it would get boring, but Crowley took one look at the Spanish Inquisition and spent the next week drunk out of his mind. Compared to what humans could think up, demons had nothing.]

Money was one of the best things they ever invented.

I'm sure it was. It turned people into their own metaphorical dragons.

Interesting turn of phrase. Why 'dragons'?

[He could think of a few other metaphors he might have used before that one. Colour him intrigued.]

Symbols of greed and power, or at least that's been my experience. They gather piles of gold and wealth and sit on them, burning alive anyone who tries to take it from them.
