Summary: New Year's Eve Party
The Story:

[ Previously in the month all residents received an invitation to a formal event: a black tie affair to ring in the New Year. The ballroom and adjacent areas are decked out for the party starting at eight o'clock sharp, meticulously planned and executed, glittering décor to match the no doubt glittering attire as music pours into the halls from the dance floor.

Bars flank each side, service for all manner of alcohol unless a minor requests something, and the primary setting stage features an enormous clock for the countdown. ]




[ Where will you be when the clock strikes midnight? ]

[ Liv reaches out for his hand, but it's a loose grasp in case he's a no go. ]

You could come dance, then. Just once around the dance floor?

You sure you're drunk enough for this?

[Because he's pretty sure he's not. He's here to brood around margins, not make a scene. Not like he ever has much choice where Liv's involved.]

Probably not, but if it makes you feel better, I'm not a great dancer. It's a thinly veiled excuse to press against you.

[ So, she is drunk enough to say shit like that. ]

[ If he were a computer, there would be a long *buffering* circle spinning around right now. Because, uh, people don't say that kind of stuff to him. Like, ever. ]

[ Liv pause, smiling just a little and looks at him. ]

Can you help me out with this? Not the dancing part, I mean...is this a...

[ She uses a few vague hand gestures between them. ]

A thing? I mean a Thing, thing. Or is it just a 'sometimes we make out' thing? I'm good, I promise, with whatever it is, but if I'm reading into it too much, I can definitely back off. There doesn't have to be any...thing.

[ Jesus she's bad at this, but she wants to be respectful, she wants to be a friend to him first, and anything else? That'd just be a bonus. ]

Think I'd do better with the dancing. [Wistful look at the dancefloor.

Because ah shit. Suddenly this turned into A Talk. A Talk he's not sure he is even capable of having. ]

What kind of thing is a thing? [Because he knows kinda what she means, but he's not going to pin himself down to something where she might think it means something else. How to try to be decent when you're kind of an asshole, chapter 2. ]

I mean, a is it a thing I can tell my friends I dating the hot guy who sometimes yells at everyone on the network, or is it a thing where during and after events we make out as some kind of reassurance that we're both still alive and the rest of the time we're casual friends?

[ She doesn't want him to feel like she's pushing for anything he might not want, so she's trying to carefully word things. Either way, she's still gonna dance with him. ]

Why the hell would you want to admit that to your friends?

[He'll cop to the 'guy who yells on the network' but that's about it. He doesn't think that's much of a chick magnet.]

Because I like you? And generally, you tell people you're friends with if you're dating someone.

[scoutsniper]

...Shit. Maybe girls do.

[Guys tell NO ONE. Because you tell a dude you're with a hot girl, he's going to try to muscle in. Nope. ]

Okay, so I'll rephrase. Can I tell my girl friends?

[ She gives him a small smile but wants to make sure he gets something, too. ]

It's okay if the answer is no, you know. I mean the worst news a girl can ever get is 'congrats, you're a zombie.' Everything else sort of pales in comparison.

[scoutsniper]

I guess? If you want. I mean. Not like I'm gonna stop you.

[It's weird, but...that's about it. ]

Longer we talk about this, the longer I'm spared from the dance floor.

[ Are they...dating now? Is that what just happened? She still has no idea so bringing it up didn't really help. ]

Done talking, let's dance.

[ No longer spared, and she takes his hand, but does lead him to one of the corners that seems the least populated. ]

['Dating' is, according to Frank, something teenagers do. All that young love innocent stuff, right along with words like 'going steady' and 'necking'. ]

Shit. [He outed himself there. No choice now, but to dance. Hopefully not many people are watching. ]
