Summary: New Year's Eve Party
The Story:

[ Previously in the month all residents received an invitation to a formal event: a black tie affair to ring in the New Year. The ballroom and adjacent areas are decked out for the party starting at eight o'clock sharp, meticulously planned and executed, glittering décor to match the no doubt glittering attire as music pours into the halls from the dance floor.

Bars flank each side, service for all manner of alcohol unless a minor requests something, and the primary setting stage features an enormous clock for the countdown. ]

['Find the people who aren't afraid, and start there.' Someone had said that to him, and the words had stuck. Is this woman unafraid? He can't be sure if it's just that she can't see him properly, but as someone who enjoys conversation for conversation's sake, he'll take what he can get.]

Jazz, too? [Okay, so he doesn't often find people he can talk about music with.]

[She nods. It's a little of both, really - she does enjoying having someone to shoot the shit with, and she's seen scarier things than a fairly sentient zombie. Plus, with her magic she knows she'd be able to defend herself if the need arose.]

Jazz too. He's ... very old and he lived in the Quarter when the more famous artists were getting their starts. He heard a lot of the performances first hand.

[If there's one sure way to engage this particular fairly sentient zombie in conversation, it's by talking about music. Especially if that music happens to be jazz.

Most of R's assumptions on what it was like to be Living, before the New Hunger, are based around the atmosphere that music produces. Something simpler and happier, without that constant gnawing emptiness in the pit of his stomach.]

What was living there... like?

Complicated, but not for reasons we didn't bring on ourselves.

[Her family is made up of Not Nice People, and they made themselves quite a few enemies.]

But the city itself? There's a small fascination with the dead, but the people bring so much vibrance to it that it straddles the line very well. It's really the perfect place for a family like mine.

[Considering most of them are, you know, undead.]

... Like yours?

[He looks at her curiously now, having moved far enough into the shaft of light filtering out of the door to be seen fairly clearly. Though there's certainly a light behind the pewter-grey eyes that continue asking the question long after the words have left his lips, there is something very decidedly 'not right' about this individual.

She may not mind that. He's several people who don't.]

[deathlessness]

[She nods, and she doesn't seem surprised, but more curious at what particular brand of undead he happens to be.]

My siblings are the first vampires of our world. My mother was the one who created the immortality spell.

[keephersafe]

Immortality... [The word comes out with a careful tread over each syllable - not one he has ever said out loud before (that he remembers) - and he looks more curious now than he did before.]

Y.. you can't die?

[How did he know what it meant? Still some synapses firing in there, after all.]

[She shakes her head.]

I'm not immortal. Not anymore, anyway. I'm still human.

[Squint.

A lot of the concepts he comes across here are so hard to get his head around, but it's all good for him. He's never going to complain about things making his brain work.]

How... how come?

[deathlessness]

I was bound to a very powerful witch who cast an immortality spell on herself. Whatever happened to her, happened to me, so while she was immortal, I was immortal too. But once she died, I was free to live my own mortal life.

[More often than not, R comes up against concepts in general conversation that he has trouble wrapping his head around. This is one of those times.

He's trying.]

... You didn't die?

[So he managed to connect a dot or two, there.]

No.

[This is the strange part.]

I suppose I got lucky that I didn't rapidly age or something along those lines, but magic is funny that way.

You'd know... b-better than me.

[Says the walking corpse, but if you asked him just how it is that he's walking around without a pulse, he couldn't tell you.

Probably not magic, though.]

True. But some things even someone as knowledgeable as me can't predict. I'm just grateful that whatever twist of fate it was, it allowed me more time with my family.
