Summary: New Year's Eve Party
The Story:

[ Previously in the month all residents received an invitation to a formal event: a black tie affair to ring in the New Year. The ballroom and adjacent areas are decked out for the party starting at eight o'clock sharp, meticulously planned and executed, glittering décor to match the no doubt glittering attire as music pours into the halls from the dance floor.

Bars flank each side, service for all manner of alcohol unless a minor requests something, and the primary setting stage features an enormous clock for the countdown. ]




[ Where will you be when the clock strikes midnight? ]

[ Nora flashes him a smile at the compliment. ] That would have been wonderful. Not many grand parties like this in the suburbs, though.

I don't think many people were nostalgic, as such. They were more of a curiosity to the wastelanders than anything. Relics of a time they didn't have the context to understand.

[mettatonvevo]

[Mettaton takes a moment. Suburb. Oh!]

Oh, those collection of human houses that aren't a city, yes? Full of lots of families?

[Mettaton you sound positively alien when you put it like that.]

That sounds a lot like how us Monsters reacted to when magazines and books and things would fall down to us. We didn't really understand what was going on in them but they were fun to read.

[geiger]

Those are the ones. [ She smiles a little, figuring how alien the concept must be to so many from her own world now, too. ]

It seems like an odd to learn about things, but I can definitely imagine it being fun to be able to put the pieces together.

[mettatonvevo]

[He laughs.]

I'd always seen them referenced in various things like shows and books but even being on the Surface for the time I was back home, I never really saw them. I don't think "I want to visit some random human suburb!" is a statement that would be taken well.

[Especially with him being a celebrity, it would probably bring a lot of unwanted attention the way of the unlucky (or lucky?) people he would visit.]

Oh it was! Though the lack of information did lead to interesting problems. For instance for the longest time I didn't know the correct number of fingers humans are supposed to have!

[geiger]

You're not wrong there. [ She laughs a little, too. ] Suburbs are often characterised by how close knit they are. I don't think a lot of the people would take well to such a sudden change.

[ She holds up her hand, wiggling her fingers in front of his face. ]

Well, there's one mystery solved.

[mettatonvevo]

Interesting! Were you close with the people in your suburb? What was that like?

[When she holds up her hand he lets out another small laugh of delight and holds up his in comparison- which also has five fingers though he looks at them thoughtfully.]

In this form I have the full five fingers but in my box form I only have four. And I even have gloves that range from four fingers to six! I wanted to cover all my bases.

[geiger]

They were nice enough, though most of them were more conservative than I am. My husband's family had lived in the area for years, they all loved him, but me being the new girl took some getting used to.

[ She presses her outstretched palm against his. ]

That's pretty useful. Ever get to use the six fingered ones?

[mettatonvevo]

Ohhh, dramatic! How did you two meet? Was it love at first sight? Did the family cause any problems?

[Mettaton loves some good gossip; especially when there is absolutely no way it can splash back onto him!

Mettaton moves his fingers to match to Nora, marveling at how they align. His hand looks so much like a human's. Proof, right here, that all of his dreams really did come true. There's a bloom of happiness in his soul and it glows just a little brighter than before.]

Oh absolutely. They were my favorite for whenever I would host my cooking show. My fans loved to try and guess which gloves I would be wearing and when.

[geiger]

College. We were the stars of the track team. [ She smiles fondly - those were carefree days that she liked to return to in her mind whenever she felt down. ] They took a while to warm up to me, but that's in laws for you.

[mettatonvevo]

[Her smile is beautiful, fond, and maybe just a tad sad. Mettaton's eyes soften in sympathy as he looks at her.]

I'm glad they did, though it's not terribly surprising. You're a lovely person and it was bound to win everyone over eventually.

[Human family dynamics are always so odd to hear about beyond seeing them in magazines or on TV.]

...I hope the future has been as good to you as the past seems to have been.

[geiger]

[ Nora reaches over to squeeze his hand appreciatively. ]

That's sweet of you. It's been something of a trial, but I have hopes it will get better. And besides, in the meantime this place isn't so bad.
