+ The Universe is under no obligation to make sense to You +
Who: EVERYONE!
Where: EVERYWHERE!
When: Saturday, May 19th - Wednesday, May 23rd.
Rating: PG-13, warn if you're gonna go higher!
Summary: A catch-all for the Kyln / Sierra Madre event!
The Story:
For the duration of this event, the entire mansion will be part space jail, part apocalyptic wasteland desert with an abandoned hotel/casino. On the third day an escape route not previously discovered in the Kyln appears and breakouts can be planned...
...Only for everyone to find themselves walking through a large glass prison toward the toxic gas filled wasteland of a desert, the Sierra Madre. Does the prison look better than the toxic cloud outside? If you're stuck in the prison after dark beyond day 3, you'll be forced into and locked in your cell for the night. But at least locked away, nothing from the outside can hurt you. If you try to brave the actual elements in the desert it might be a little hard to breathe. The air has pockets of toxic gas and even a few seconds of exposure could prove deadly. And watch out for the Ghost People.
Inside the abandoned hotel/casino you'll find shelter from the gas and ghosts, but beware the holograms that are 50/50 with their attitude. Prison beatings, a beating from the holograms, which one Would You Rather? And whatever you do, don't try on the collars lying around unless you like to explode. Literally.
[ This is a catch-all for all your prison/desert needs! Please mark your threads clearly in the subject line with your character's name and either a cell number or just a location if you didn't feel like randomizing it or you're making a top level for a public place (like the dining hall or wandering the hotel/casino). Here's the plot post if you need it!
Have fun! ]

Meaning he's not about to answer that question if he can help it, couching it behind disdain and incredulity that Jay's even concerned about something as simple as security cams.
"Unless you're planning on figuring out how to stall the security feeds."
no subject
Still, Jay's trying--he's trying to do things right this time. Trying to keep his priorities in order. And evasive as Tim's being right now, he's got a point about stalling the feeds. The guards won't get backup if they don't know the prisoners are escaping. And, hell, even if they know there's something wrong, screwing with their surveillance system will make it harder for them to track it down.
"Yeah? Yeah. To cover up--yeah. Of course."
Jay had a plan, though, even if sabotaging the feeds wasn't it. He wasn't just trying to get his hands on the footage to check for missing time. His voice edges higher, more insistent.
"And--and beyond that, the footage--the security footage, it'll make finding a way out easier if we can get our hands on it. We can--I dunno, figure out the layout of this place, watch for patterns in the guard patrols."
no subject
It's a high-security prison. Stands to reason they'd take additional precautions.
"I think that by the time we're accessing security footage, we're already gonna be on our way outta here."
no subject
Jay's never been a good liar. Beyond that, Jay screwed up so goddamn badly last event--yeah, fine, he'll acknowledge it--that it makes sense he wouldn't be on board for Jay's plan this time.
Why is it that, every time he tries to sneak into the narrative, he just makes things worse?"S...sure, yeah." His voice dips quieter as a camera floats lazily by. "'Cause by the time we're there, we'll be--we'll be out, but, I mean, if there are still people inside..."
His eyebrows quirk upward.
"Maybe we can...take whatever's useful, try and knock out the rest."
no subject
He's not on board for anyone's plans at the moment, including and especially his own.
He's done making plans for the time being.
no subject
But Tim was talking in terms of we, earlier. Now he's not. Now he's just gone quiet.
Jay's focus drops back to his tray, to the fork with the smoothed-off points. Everything here's rounded and solid and bolted down, so nobody gets hurt. So he can't hurt anyone.
This isn't a good time, but it's not like a good time is ever really gonna show up.
"Hey, uh." Jay forces himself to look up. "Hey, Tim?"
no subject
The sooner he can get out of here, the better. But if it backfires, he'll either be stuck in solitary or subjected to whatever the hell these guards feel like doing to him, which he's gonna go out on a limb and assume will be appropriately brutal. This is about as lawless as this shit gets.
Which is just extra excellent for him. He really needs some extra electrical discharge fucking him up.
no subject
Tim's on edge. He's on edge the way he was when they went back to the hospital the first time, the way he went from good-natured lawbreaking to "Can we be done now?"
Jay kicks nervously at the leg of the table. Bolted down.
Maybe the comparison was a little more on-the-nose than Jay intended.
"Never mind," Jay mumbles, eyes back on the grey-brown slurry on his tray.
no subject
And add murder to his list of crimes. Arson isn't so very far off base. Who tried to burn down the mansion, huh?
He should be worried about how it's getting easier. He should be.
But worrying isn't gonna solve the problem.
no subject
He is not exactly comfortable with the way Tim watches that guard.
"Look, we can talk about it after we get out," he insists under his breath, shoulders hiked up as he hunches over his food. He's got no camera, nothing to protect here but his own skin and Tim's, but this place is a spring-loaded deathtrap.
If that guard felt like stopping Tim before he could try anything, Jay doubts he'd get anything more than a slap on the wrist. "He was looking at me funny," would probably hold up in court.
no subject
"I like my prisons to look like mansions instead," he adds, somewhat drier.
He's just putting it out there: it's a little absurd that they feel like they gotta break outta here, but it's not like they're gonna end up in a place that's functionally much better once this event is done.
no subject
"At least this one's not asking us to go to war for it."
He's right, though. One way or another, this is gonna be over. Either they wait it out, or they break out.
Jay just wants to make it back in one piece. Ideally, one piece plus one confiscated camera, but he'll admit this is the kind of place where you have to pick your battles.
no subject
"Did they take your, uh..." He taps at the bottle in his pocket as it rattles there, softly. "Can at least be glad they left me mine."
i'm guessing tim has not met jay's six-toed feline terror yet
If he lost them, would he just go back to whatever passed for normal a couple months ago? Or would things get...worse?
"Place isn't really giving us much time to prepare." Not that he'd expect much consideration from Wonderland. It gives them pizza, french fries, and some time off every now and then, but not much more. "Maybe that's on purpose, I dunno."
He scratches at the patchy scruff across his chin, and behind his hand, he mutters, "Still not sure what I'm doing with Archie."
probably not?? uhhh for simplicity lets just say no lol
There are a million things he can picture someone (Alex Kralie, with his mocking drawl and cocky half-grin and early noughties bad haircut tickling the rims of his glasses) cracking jokes about, teasing Jay endlessly with Jay's got a booooyfriend (as if Alex wasn't just as fucking insufferable about having an S.O.) - but he lets his mind blank out, emptying it of each of them.
It doesn't matter.
"Didn't...realize you were, uh. Worried about someone else." Which is...ridiculous, right? Jay probably has plenty of friends outside of the circle Tim's aware of, and now that he thinks that, it just feels absurd to imagine. Since when has Jay been a social butterfly, and who the fuck is Archie?
no subject
Oh god, what's Tim thinking?
Yeah, this is Archie. He lives in my room. Sleeps in my bed. Wakes me up sometimes by sitting on my fa--
Jay's just gonna stop right there, thanks.
"Cat," he manages. Needs more than that, but the thoughts won't line up right. He just needs--words, clarification, now. "He's, uh, Archie's my cat. Some guy left, brother had to rehome his pets, and uh. Archie. Happened."
Great job. Ten outta ten.
no subject
"I, uh...didn't know you had a cat," says Tim, maybe a bit too awkwardly, so that he doesn't have to act weirdly relieved that Jay doesn't have - what? A friend Tim doesn't know about? Tim's not...he doesn't fucking own Jay. It'd be stupid to act like Jay can't have friends that Tim doesn't have.
That'd be stupid, right?
no subject
Jay stares at the ceiling, like maybe it'll collapse and give them both an excuse to stop talking. Tim definitely thought Archie was something else. Someone else. Whatever. Jay's not sure what, exactly, is going on here, but he knows it's embarrassing.
"He's got six toes on each foot, so, uh. That's cool."
no subject
"...well, I wouldn't worry about him. Most pets turn out fine during events. Like, it doesn't seem to affect 'em or...whatever."
Doesn't seem to, because he's not one hundred percent on that one, but he's pretty sure they'd know if more people were losing pets to shit like gingerbread mansions or Reaper tech.
God, he could use a smoke right now. Too bad that wasn't considered necessary.
no subject
Hoping, sure, but convinced? Not in the slightest.
"I dunno, I just get the feeling this whole...war or whatever's gonna hit the Mansion. The 'real' Mansion, I mean, not...old-timey fantasy Mansion or gingerbread Mansion or Reaper Mansion or whatever else it decides to turn itself into."
He yanks at a loose thread hanging from the cuff of his jumpsuit.
"Not sure what'll happen to pets in that case."
The thread snaps.
"Especially if the Mirrors cross over."
no subject
Still, a cat seems like a step further.
"And not, say...you?"
no subject
Jay makes eye contact.
"Tim."
He holds up one hand, palm flat.
"He's the best cat in the world, but I swear to you he's dumber than I am."
no subject
He's never interacted with cats in any personal, significant fashion, but - how dumb can cats get? He's always figured them to be largely pretty crafty animals, right? They can take care of themselves. Most of them can be outdoors-only pets without being too dependent on their owners, right?
Why has Jay adopted the world's dumbest cat, apparently?
no subject
He cracks a bitter smile, more a grimace than anything, and shrugs.
"I dunno, that, maybe?"
no subject
"He what? When? Jesus - when were you gonna say something?"
