Summary: Xigbar and Yotsuba head to the kitchen to grab something to eat, and Xigbar asks about her obvious interest in a certain Graceful Assassin...
the Story:
Sitting upon the floor amongst all the pieces of paper that were so wonderfully drawn was Yotsuba, humming her own little tune as her green crayon flew over the sheet to create what looked like a tree. She concentrated very hard on what she was trying to make, only to stop when her stomach gurgled. Blinking, she stood up quickly and glanced around to see who was there.
Upon seeing Xigbar, she walked over to him (regardless of whether he was busy or not) and reached up to tug on his sleeve with wide and hungry eyes, "I want something to eat!"
Every once in awhile, the Freeshooter inspected his guns and gave them some much-needed maintenance; with as little battle going on as there was, his weapons threatened to fall into disrepair. Xigbar looked up from his dismantled rifle and stared at Yotsuba for a long moment, then tried to locate Demyx or Luxord. Both of the other men were notably missing, leaving Xigbar to scratch his scalp with his one clean finger. "All out of snacks already?" he inquired, looking next to the floor as if it would supply the girl with something to eat.
"Mr. Magic Water Guy ate all my snacks." Yotsuba pouted as she pointed to the trash can that had (undoubtedly) filled up with wrappers from all the different candies she had brought up from the kitchen. "It's dinner time. I want something to eat!" She tugged on his sleeve again, eyes still wide. The little girl's stomach started growling something fierce and she looked down to her tiny little tummy before looking up at Xigbar, "I'm not supposed to make food without an adult!"
Xigbar reached for his polishing rag as the little girl pulled at his coat, sighing as he gave the room another look before standing up. "All right, all right, kid," he relented, cleaning his hands a little and tossing the rag back on his desk. He really did not want to imagine how much Demyx would fret if he found out that Yotsuba had gone without eating a meal. "Let's head down to the kitchen, then."
Too bad he could not just warp them down; he could use a shortcut right about now.
Yotsuba cheered happily as she had finally won a meal. She scampered on over towards the door of the room and then sat down on the ground as she placed on her shoes. Making sure that each shoe was on properly, Yotsuba stood up and then turned the door knob to enter into the hallway. As she stepped through, she peeked in towards Xigbar and waved her hand enthusiastically and.. albeit impatient, "Come on Scarface! We'll be late to eat dinner!"
"Late to ea-- heh." Xigbar smirked at Yotsuba's impatience, waving her off as he followed after her into the hall. Shutting the door and briefly wondering where his roommates (one actual and the other invited) had disappeared off to, he started down the hall with the little girl. He also took note of the nickname he had gotten used to, filing away the fact that Yotsuba was the only one to call him that in recent (or any, really) memory."You already know what you're gonna get?" he asked as they reached the first staircase.
"... I want something super good!" Yotsuba answered honestly as she walked next to Xigbar. She took her spot a few steps ahead of him (small feet walked faster apparently) as her green eyes wandered around, looking at all the different things in the hallway as she was led around, "What are you gonna get?" She leaned her head upwards, green pigtails bobbing up and down with each step as she watched her adult companion with excited eyes.
The question was unexpected, and it showed in how Xigbar's brow knitted together. He laughed shortly, brushing at his chin as he looked back down at Yotsuba. "I hadn't thought about it," he replied, taking a moment to play up on the moment. "But what you're getting sounds good. I'll have what you're having." Right about now would be one of the few times Xigbar missed having two eyes; it was damn difficult winking with just one eye.
Yotsuba just smiled brightly at Xigbar's answer before nodding, "Ok! Something super good!" Her eyes widened in excitement as she saw the railing for the stairs and then raced on over, scampering to crawl on the bar while holding down onto it with both her legs and her arms, "I'll race you down there!" She let her arms and legs loosen a bit, so that she could slide down the banister with ease! ... that is.. if Xigbar would allow her to do so.
Xigbar paused by the banister as he got a good idea of what Yotsuba intended to do; while he was not personally against throwing caution to the wind for the sake of fun (except where certain cannonballs were concerned), he could just see Demyx throwing a fit if he found out. "Our little secret," he told her, tousling green hair as he started down the staircase. She was at that age where kids get their scrapes and occasional bump; besides, if she did happen to fall, twisting gravity to catch her wouldn't take much.
The grin on Yotsuba's face was priceless as she let herself soar down the banister with a cheer. The cold banister continued to slip past her fingers and the thrill of sliding down so fast was exciting. Glancing back, she saw that the railing was coming to an end and slowed her descent until she came to a complete hault just before she bumped her bottom too hard. She slowly crawled off to the last step and hopped down to the first floor before raising her hands up in the air in triumph, "I won!"
He kept his eye on her as she flew by on the banister, taking his time on the steps to make sure she was not in any danger of actually falling. Xigbar quickened his pace as Yotsuba neared the bottom, applauding loudly as the girl began cheering. "You've gotta show me your moves sometime, kiddo," he said, smirking as he finally arrived on the landing next to her. "You were going pretty fast down there."
Yotsuba held up a waggling finger with a serious expression on her face (although, considering who it was ON, it's hard to distinguish if she was being serious at all~), "Sliding is an art! You've gotta be swift, and balanced! It's not just for any ordinary civilian!" .. what WAS she talking about? "What's more important is the super good food! If we don't get food, then we can't get heavy to slide down!"
The serious expression on Yotsuba's face amused the hell out of the man, but he resisted the urge to laugh to allow her to keep her victorious moment. "You're absolutely right," he agreed, patting her back to coax her to head over to the kitchen. "Guess we know who to go to if we're in need of a master banister slider."
The serious expression melted away as it dawned on her that they were close to the kitchen! Turning her head, the little green haired wonder quickly walked forward and the paused. Peering her head quickly from side to side, Yotsuba quickly planted her back against the wall and then pulled out her little water gun. First, she was the master banister slider.. and now she was a secret agent! She pushed open the door just a crack to see if anyone was in their territory.. and then jumped in with a yell, "HANDS AND FEET UP! REACH FOR THE SKIES!" ... she was a special one.
Ah, the dreaded water gun. Xigbar eyed the dangerous weapon warily as he walked behind Yotsuba, allowing her to have her fun as they neared the kitchen. Likely there was no one around, considering no one had responded to her shouting. Smirking, he glanced down at her before heading in to raid the refrigerator. "Looks like it's clear," he quipped as he opened the door.
Yotsuba put the water gun away in her back pocket and then smiled triumphantly up at Xigbar, "I scared them away good!" She answered to him before looking around the kitchen. Her ears perked when he opened the door, and it was only moments before she was by his side, looking at the fridge to see what was there as well, "This place is really magical isn't it!" The fridge was full of food, "We don't have to go grocery shopping!"
"Wouldn't be bad to see a grocery once in awhile, though," Xigbar said, mostly to himself, as he moved aside some jars of condiments in search of something substantial to eat. "Well, I did say I'd eat what you eat, kid. Do you know what you want?"
"Hrm." Yotsuba kneeled down and leaned into the refridgerator, her hands searching through to find something of super good to eat. She searched.. and searched.. until she blinked, "Ah!" The little girl smiled happily as she pulled out a tub of ice cream from the bottom drawer and held it up for Xigbar to see, "Ice cream! That's super good!"
"Super good, but that's not gonna make you full," pointed out Xigbar, tilting his head to look at Yotsuba's cold prize. He had half a mind to actually let her eat it -- ice cream did sound good -- but he had to at least try to get her to eat something else first. "And if you eat too much ice cream, you're gonna get a brain freeze. How 'bout a sandwich first?"
There was a pause from the little girl as she stared up with confused eyes, "... we're gonna eat ice cream though?" Yotsuba looked down at the ice cream before looking back up, "Promise?"
"Hey, definitely," Xigbar promised, patting her on the head fondly. "I want ice cream too, you know. Just gotta keep up appearances or Dem's gonna have my hide." He briefly wondered if that went over the girl's head as he pulled bread and various kind of condiments out of the fridge.
"OH! Ok!" Yotsuba smiled happily, having no idea what Xigbar had even meant by 'appearances'. The little girl put the ice cream back in its place before watching as he took out bread and little condiments, "... What kind of sandwich are we having, Scarface? Is it a super good sandwich?!" She was excited again.
"A super good sandwich is only as good as the dude that makes it." Xigbar adopted a mock-serious expression and nodded at his [goofy] logic. "And there's tons of stuff to customize with, kid, so run wild." That said, he started peeling a banana to put on his peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
Yotsuba's eyes widened at the sandwich he was making, "Wow!! I like banana's! I want a sandwich like that too!" Before heading to where Xigbar was making sandwiches, Yotsuba went to the silverware drawer and pulled out a big huge knife so she could spread her own peanut butter.
Xigbar took one look at the knife Yotsuba had pulled out of the drawer and started towards her quickly. "Whoa, whoa, kiddo, careful there." He plucked the knife from her, giving it a grimace before pulling out a smaller knife from the drawer and handing it to her. "This'll spread much better with the bread, okay?" He paused as he looked at the knife for a long moment, eyeing its rose-patterned handle. "Heh. Kinda like Marluxia."
Thinking about the Graceful Assassin, Xigbar recalled how many times Yotsuba had talked enthusiastically about the man. Considering Marluxia's less-than-warm disposition, it was quite puzzling why Yotsuba always tried to be in his company (much to Demyx's utter despair). "Say, Yotsuba ... why do you like Marly so much?"
There was a look of dissapointment as Yotsuba was handed a smaller, more blunt and more suited knife for the task at hand. "Oh. Ok." She then moved back to where the bread was and pulled out two pieces. Putting it on the table, she reached for the peanut butter and scooped out a large glop with her knife before setting down on the first slice. When she was asked about 'Marly', she froze with the knife barely touching the peanut butter.
"Marly's really nice! ... He's always worried about me... and we drew a lot and.. .. .." For a 6 year old... her face turned really red with embarrassment.
If he had two eyes, Xigbar's eyes would have narrowed in on Yotsuba at her apparent blush. As it was, he simply shut the drawer and walked over to stand next to her, fixing up his own sandwich with a generous amount of jelly and banana. "You're all red, kid," he commented nonchalantly, already imagining what could have brought on the blush. A crush? At her age? ... Maybe? "Did something happen with Marly?"
"You're... you're not gonna laugh?" Yotsuba asked quietly as she pulled her hands away from the peanut butter knife and placed it into her lap. "You won't tell Mr. Magic Water Guy? He gets really upset when... when I talk about Marly! ... I don't want him to be mad..." She was getting a bit flustered as she was reminded of that day; the day she was really a grown up.
She was getting even redder, Xigbar noticed. He quirked his lips, not speaking for a moment as he finished his sandwich. "I won't tell him if it's about Marluxia. He'd just get upset that I even asked you." He leaned against the counter and took a bite out of his slightly-odd sandwich. "C'mon, kid. You're gonna burst if you don't say; 's why you're all red."
Yotsuba was quiet for a moment -- a complete change from the upbeat and rather energetic girl was sitting here, embarrassed and nervous. "MARLY KISSED ME WHEN I WAS A GROWN-UP." There. She had let out the secret and now, she was struggling to cover her face to hide herself.
At Yotsuba's exclamation, Xigbar coughed and nearly doubled over, pushing himself up on one arm and thumping on his chest a few times. A moment later, he let out a strangled sigh as he swallowed correctly and looked incredulously at the little girl. "Kissed when you were grow--" He stopped as his mind completely digested the information, and he really had to fight down the urge to laugh. "Holy crap. No way, kid."
"I'm not kidding, Scarface!" Yotsuba looked up and then reached up to lightly hit on his arm with her balled fists, "Marly did! Marly was really nice to me! And he talked to me! And we went out on a date! And he gave me flowers! ..." She was silent for a moment before she pulled her hands away, "... I wanna be an adult... I wanna be with Marly..."
Xigbar had to place put down his sandwich while he contemplated Yotsuba's words. The Marluxia that he knew -- hell, that the rest of the world knew -- was hardly the type to consider a little girl's feelings. But he had seen some pretty mind-altering events in the mansion... "Don't be in a rush to grow up, kiddo. You'll miss out on tons of stuff that way."
He hummed briefly, tossing the revelation around in his head for a good minute. "Well, he hasn't done anything to you yet... Which means he's either tolerating you or actually gives a damn." He couldn't decide which option was more worrisome.
Yotsuba sat her hands on her lap, looking up with shaky emerald colored eyes that looked confused, "He told me that he wanted me to be careful when you and Mr. Magic Water Guy and Luxer dissapeared! But I tried looking for him when I was rolling up Katamari's and I couldn't find him either!"
She lowered her gaze to her half made sandwich before reaching up to poke at the bread.
Marluxia, telling Yotsuba to be careful. Xigbar questioned whether Yotsuba would know what sarcasm was or not, leaving her side to get himself a glass of water. "He's probably back now; probably just disappeared with the event, too." He paused to drink, thinking about her words. "I dunno, kid; I'd still be careful around him if I were you."
"Oh." Yotsuba folded up the one slice of bread she had placed peanut butter on and squished it together so that the peanut butter spread a little more without the use of a knife. She gave a sad little sigh as she took a bite from her sloppily made sandwich.
Great. Now the kid was sad. Good going, Xig, he thought to himself as he scratched his head. Now she'll be depressed all day unless you say something. Stupid heart; he was still getting used to feeling guilt again. "Erm... Hey, don't look like that. Now that I know, you can come and talk to me about Marly. Better than Dem freaking out every time you want to talk about him, yeah?"
Blinking, Yotsuba glanced up with a little glob of peanut butter sticking to her cheek from her sandwich. .. She was a rather messy eater after all, "I can?!" It perked her up knowing that Xigbar was at least not going to freak out and keep telling her, 'NO NO NO NO NO' when she mentioned Marly, "Can I really?!"
"Yep, you can," Xigbar affirmed, nodding and giving a thumbs up as he went back to his sandwich. "Our little secret, too. Dem doesn't have to know until you're ready to t--" He paused, thinking that sentence sounded odd. "... Well, until he's ready to listen, I guess."
Yotsuba smiled brightly, her mood having been lifted up more, "Ok!" She reached for the small knife and the second piece of bread and then scooped out another glob of peanut butter and slathered it all over her piece of bread, "May I have the jelly please?" She chirped, cleaning off her knife with her mouth.
Xigbar could only chuckle softly as he picked up the jar and placed it in front of her. Crisis averted.
