"Oh, they are really cool. You can take pictures, or video chat with people, or just send text messages if you don't want to deal with actually talking to someone. I'm more of a face-to-face person myself."

She pauses as they get closer to the mansion, turning to look up at the woman next to her.

"But flying is a lot more impressive than a smartphone."

"That usually depends on the species you're talking to."

Which is true. Some aliens do actually have the ability to fly, but their technology is so behind the times that a smart phone would seem like a revelatory thing. However, there's also plenty of species that are the opposite. The universe is an incredibly varied place.

"Sometimes it's a little of both."

Juliet puts her hands behind her back, nodding as if that made all the sense in the world.

"I guess. I've never seen anyone fly, though, not until today, anyway. It was pretty amazing."

"Well, thank you. I'm pretty fond of it myself." Flying has always been her thing, even before she had superpowers. "I was in the Air Force too, before all this happened, so I've always preferred the view from above."

"My boyfriend was in the military before he ended up here, too. And I was a detective with the Santa Barbara Police Department." She doesn't plan to elaborate on Steve's powers, though. If by some chance Carol does know him (and considering what little Juliet has put together, it's not outside the realm of possibility), she'll figure it out, and if not, that's Steve's information to share. It took him a long time to even open up to Juliet about the extent of it.

"What do you mean before all this happened?"

"Oh, I wasn't born like this. I was in an accident with a really powerful space rock and whatever I was exposed to gave me superpowers."

So she had to fly the old fashioned way, and for a lot of her life, she wasn't even aware of there being anything out there beyond the moon that circled her planet. and then for six years she wasn't aware that there was anything less. She's still trying to find the balance between the two.

Also the difference between her and Steve is that Carol doesn't really care about hiding her powers.

"So I've lived a little of both lives."

"That must have been one heck of a space rock."

Meeting people with superpowers is still something that Juliet is wrapping her head around, but in a world where she knows witches and vampires and sentient robots, it just makes everything else so much more exciting.

"So, now you're a superhero?"

"That's what they tell me."

She doesn't really see anything "super" about her heroics. Sure, she's that unstoppable force you never want to run into, but it's hard to view yourself as hugely exceptional when the diversity of space is a thing. Carol's confidence has always been more of the simple kind. She knows what she's capable of, she knows what she can do to you, but she also doesn't have anything to prove, either.

"Mostly I've just been trying to help this one race of people find their way home."

"Every superhero I meet here is so humble."

All two of them, anyway. Steve never uses that word to describe himself, either, so Juliet tends to avoid it, even if it is true.

"So, is that what you do? Fly around the universe and help people out?"

"More or less. I was actually traveling with this one race of people. They were refugees after their own planet was destroyed, so we were picking everyone up and helping them find a home of their own."

Which would just seem like a nice thing to do to her, but to anyone else it's ... being a superhero. That's just what you do.

"That's such a wonderful thing to do. A lot of people might not use those powers to be so nice."

Juliet knows that's a fact, from what Steve has told her about his adventures. But good always conquers evil, right? Except for when it doesn't.

"Do you like it? Having all that responsibility?"

Carol considers for a moment, trying to figure out how best to answer that question. She's never really thought of it like responsibility. Her powers were just another tool she could use to make the universe better. It doesn't make her a hero, it just gives her more options.

"I always wanted to be part of that fight. Fly important missions when I was in the Air Force. I didn't have the chance to do it then because of the rules, but I can do something about it now. That's what matters."

Juliet can understand that. Maybe not in a "superpower" kind of way, but all she's ever wanted to do is help people and make the world a little better. Some days, it was harder to do than she thought it would be.

"I get that," she confesses, glancing up at Carol. Talking to another woman about this sort of thing isn't something she gets the chance to do a lot. "I don't have a lot of rules in my way of doing what I want to do but... People don't always take me seriously."

"God, it's the worst." Carol can sympathize with that, hard core. "Not only that, but they never seem to want to let you prove yourself either. They've just already written you off as not good enough."

"Exactly! No matter what you do, there's no way to win." She sighs. "It's really nice to be able to talk to someone who gets it. The other women at the precinct weren't really interested in bonding over how we have to do ten times the work to get the minimum amount of credit."

"There was only one other female pilot that I remember from when I was on the Air Force and we were best friends. People gave her so much crap because she was a mom on top of being a woman."

Which only seemed to be a more blatant example of her woman-ness which made her even less appealing to the Air Force.

"But we did it together. We found ways to fly no matter what they said."

"You overcame. I hope I can do that, too."

Juliet smiles up at her, with a hint of adoration in her eyes. She's had a few strong women to look up to her in life, but all of them were back home. It's kind of nice to have one here.

"Luckily I have a pretty good team back home. It's a lot of guys, but we have each other's backs. On a good day, I think even our lead detective respects me." Lassiter is a hard nut to crack, but Juliet is pretty sure she's making her way in. More successfully than Shawn, anyway. "It's hard but, when you love what you do it's worth it, right?"

"Definitely." She grins in response, because girls kicking ass and taking names are her kinds of girls. "I'm sure you'll wear them down eventually."

"I wear everyone down eventually."

That... Does not entirely mean what you think it means, Jules, but sure. Still, she's seems more than happy to meet another awesome woman she can hang out with, and whether Carol knows it or now, Juliet has decided they are definitely now friends.

"Come on. I'll show you all the great places in the Mansion. And then you can pick out a room!"
