Who: Claire & Jamie Fraser, Bree Randall, Steve Rogers, Juliet O'Hara
Where: The Fraser Residence
When: 4-5
Rating: D for dinner party??? It shouldn't get that crazy.
Summary: Jamie and Claire host a dinner date.
The Story:

When Juliet and Steve arrive, they'll be ushered into Jamie and Claire's room that magically looks as close to Lallybroch (minus the second story) as she and Jamie could get it. There's electricity of course, but they rarely use it save in the bathroom and in Brianna's connected room. Introductions are made before Claire leads everyone to the dining room.

She doesn't cook, not well save for a few things, so the supper this evening - pot roast with potatoes and carrots, dinner rolls, a salad and good wine (and whisky) - is all Wonderland provided but homey and comforting.

After supper is done, Claire serves dessert in the parlor (a pound cake with light lemon frosting and coffee or tea--or more whisky) and they mingle and talk, sometimes as a group, and sometimes in smaller one-on-one conversations.

Getting together like this is nice. As much downtime as they have Steve feels like he doesn’t keep up with his friends like he should sometimes.

He returns the smile to Bree. “Sure,” He’s taken a liking to whiskey over the years- he blames Tony Stark.

He takes the glass when Bree hands it to him, taking a sip. “So, how’s the art going?”

Bree can't help but smile a little. Did she have a small crush on him at one point? Yes. But it feels somewhat elementary school, and besides that, he and Juliet are so cute. Mostly, she can't help but wonder why she'd thought Roger could give her anything close to what all of the happy couples around her seem to have.

Instead of soft looks and tenderness, he'd kept the fact that her parents would die horribly from her because he didn't want her to go. God, what was she thinking?

Shaking herself out of her own thoughts, she raises an eyebrow. "You remembered, it's been awhile. But it's going. There's no shortage of interesting people or objects to sketch. Do you do much drawing in your spare time or was that a one-time Christmas only special?"

“I’ve been spending more time on it lately. Back home I don’t have a lot of free time for it, but here some days I feel
Like we have nothing but free time.” It’s an indulgence he’s not used to but he’s starting to appreciate- even if downtime makes him antsy.

“I set up a studio on the tenth floor, it’s a good view over looking the grounds, a lot of natural light. You should come by sometime.” It’s been a while since he had anyone to speak art to.

"Really? I'd love to. I've been into portraits lately. Maybe I could do one for you. Or do one of someone for you?"

Bree asks that pointedly, as she glances toward Juliet. "She has really nice cheekbones." She has a great face in general, a good one for sketching.

Steve glances over a Juliet and can’t help the smile that spreads across his face. “Well, I wouldn’t say no to that.” He can feel himself blush a little but he doesn’t care.

“I haven’t really mastered people yet, at least not is they aren’t a cartoon or for a comic. I’ve been working on still lives. I’ve been thinking about portraits though. Maybe we can sit for each other too?”

"What you were drawing over Christma was incredible. I draw buildings for school, well--I did, but. Yours were incredible."

At his offer, she raises her eyebrows a little, then smiles in agreement.

"We could definitely do that. And if we're still here in a year we could do it again and see how we've improved?"

He ducks his head slightly, not really used to the compliments on his art. Mostly because there aren’t many people he shares it with. “Did you study art?”

He likes that idea and he finds himself giving her a nod in return. “That sounds like we have ourselves a deal then.”

"Actually no, not at all. I just started drawing one day. But from what my Da has told me, my grandmother really liked to draw and painted her family's portraits."

Bree would have given anything to see them, but she has no idea where they would have wound up after Lallybroch became an abandoned historical site.

"What about you? Did you ever study art?"

“So it runs in the family?”

He didn’t know where he got his artistic ability from, he just started one day too.

“I went to art school for a few years before my ma died. After that I got a job working on a comic strip but then the war hit and well- everything went in a different direction. Before all this.” He gestures to himself. “I figured art was the only thing I could do, but it’s not easy being an artist. Back then or in the future from what I’ve seen.”

"I guess it does. I never had the chance to meet her. She died when my da was a little boy."

Steve's story is fascinating though.

"One war can change so much." World War Two certainly changed her mother's entire life. "But you're right; there's a reason I still finished college with a major that wasn't in art. It's not easy to get noticed or to make real, good money off of art."
