+ Welcome to Santa Barbara Comic Con! - MINGLE LOG +

Who: EVERYONE
Where: Santa Barbara Comic Con!
When: 8/3 - 8/5
Rating: PG-13, warn if going higher
Summary: A mingle log for the Psych event - Welcome to Santa Barbara Comic Con! This would be an absolutely terrible time to get mixed up in a horrible murder!
The Story:

Welcome to Santa Barbara! Nicknamed the American Riviera, it's a cozy seaside city that can often feel like a small town. And you get to be here during its most exciting weekend - the Santa Barbara Comic Con!

Whether you come from out of town or are a Santa Barbara native, there is plenty to do in the convention center and surrounding city. Maybe you are there to cosplay, attend panels, or meet your favorite comic book creator. You might even be a guest yourself, be it a well-known illustrator or an easily overlooked character actor.

If conventions aren't your thing, there are plenty of other activities around town, whether you want to run one of the food trucks down by the pier or take advantage of the tourists with expensive tchotchkes. You could use the weekend to pick up extra hours at your comfortable pharmaceutical company job. If inclined, you can help out convention security as one of Santa Barbara's finest, the totally and completely 100% competent officers of the SBPD who do not at all whatsoever rely on a psychic to help solve a staggering percentage of crimes.

There's more to Santa Barbara than just surf and sun, though. You might be more drawn to the seedy underbelly of the city and make your living smuggling drugs, stealing cars, and robbing department stores. In which case, the convention could prove to be a convenient cover for your clandestine operations!

No matter what, you can look forward to a relaxing weekend of beautiful beaches, fun cosplay opportunities, and delicious street food. All you have to do is ignore Santa Barbara's disturbingly high murder rate.

Easier said than done, though, since day two will bring about, you guessed it - death!

When a fanmade, life-sized statue of the coolest new superhero, the Blue Revenger, falls and kills one of the convention's headlining guests, some assume it's an accident while others suspect something far more sinister. Where do you stand? Are you one of the police officers on the case, or would you rather offer your assistance as a consultant? Will you ignore the yellow tape and enjoy your weekend? Or are you just going to take advantage of the chaos to help nudge the murder rate up a tad on your own?

Are you destined to be the next victim, or will you be one who survives... under Santa Barbara skies?

[Stiffly:]

Yes, I've heard about the sort of things you've been up to.

[Ford's not aware of what it's been like, for Stan. To him, Stan is fast-talking, scam-savvy, and more than capable of navigating the criminal underworld. His impression of Stan's exploits involves a lot more expensive suits bought with fleeced money and drinks on the dime of some woman who thinks he's an astronaut or something. It was probably very easy to cheat his way through life. Not like Ford, who's had to work for every inch of legitimate recognition he's gotten in the field of paranormal studies, a field most of the scientific community still writes off!

Is Stan capable of murder? Ford doesn't know. He doesn't know what Stan does and doesn't have the stomach for, anymore.

[His face falls, and for a moment Stan goes silent. Then, the shock quickly gives way to anger.]

...You think I did it? Seriously? You actually think I'm a murderer?

[At this point, it's a rhetorical question. Unfortunately, he already knows the answer and it stings like hell. The worst part isn't even that Ford doesn't believe him, or that Ford is assuming the worst of him. It isn't even that Ford thinks that he would be capable of killing another person in cold blood.

No, it's the creeping self-hatred that accompanies all of it. He should have expected this, and he let himself get his hopes up like an idiot. Of course Ford thinks he did it, why wouldn't he at this point?
]

Yeah, well. Guess you're gonna have to be wrong for the first time in your life. I know, it's apparently real hard to believe, but I'm innocent.

[It isn't that Ford thinks Stan did it. It's that he doesn't know. Stan's protested his innocence before -- lied right to Ford's face, and that was back when they trusted each other, more than anyone in the world. If Stan could lie straight-faced to him then, well...you can understand why his word wouldn't mean much now.

And not being able to say for sure that his brother isn't a cold-blooded killer is really not much better than outright suspecting him.
]

I don't know what to believe, Stanley! You've spent the last ten years gallivanting around, lying, cheating, stealing, and goodness knows what else, and the comic book convention you set up your operation at happens to have a murder committed on the second day? I'm sorry, Stan, but I can't say for sure that you weren't involved!

[This is not a good way to express grief over how you don't know your brother anymore. But it sure is what comes out.]

What?! Just 'cause a murder happened in the same place as me doesn't mean I did the murdering! By that logic, you could have done it!

[Which he didn't, of course, but Stan can't just sit there and let Ford make assumptions about him. At the same time, he knows Ford's already made up his mind not to trust or believe him. It's why Stan doesn't offer any serious evidence or proof, because sometimes it's just...not worth it. Once someone decides you're untrustworthy, no evidence or excuse is good enough, so there's no point in putting the effort in. Why waste the energy on someone who's not going to listen to you?

So instead, he turns it on Ford and glares.
]

So why're you here? Did you just feel like gloating over seeing me in handcuffs? "Ooo, Stanley's getting arrested again! Maybe they'll put him away for good this time!"

[Someone with a healthy relationship with his own feelings and decent communication skills might express that he is hurt, here. He might say, No, Stanley. I'm worried about everything that's been happening, and I'm worried about if they WILL take you in. I don't know if you did it, because I don't have a relationship with you anymore, and that scares me. I hope you didn't, though, because whatever our differences are, I don't want you to go to prison. Of course I don't.

But Ford possesses neither of these things. Instead, he has extreme self-absorption.
]

Why am I here? I'm here because I was INVITED, Stanley! I've spent years building credibility in the paranormal community! You have no idea how hard it is to get anyone to take you seriously in a field like this! And now that it's finally starting to pay off, you show up at the only convention I've been invited to, and someone gets killed?! I could have been working on the Hadron Collider, but no, you had to sabotage my entire future! I've worked hard to build an audience for my research, Stanley. Don't you dare ruin this for me, too.

[Ask a stupid question, get an absolutely infuriating answer. He should've seen that one coming.]

It's not like I followed you here! I was planning this con way before I knew you'd be around, and the kids were already set on coming to this thing. Not everything is about you!

[It's probably the biggest lie he's told so far. Everything boils down to Ford in one way or another. Everything always has, to some degree.]

But don't you worry, Poindexter. It's not gonna ruin anything for you, 'cause you'll go back to your stupid Q&A and if some nerd asks if you know the suspect you'll laugh it off and tell 'em not every Pines is related. You can just go right back to pretending I don't exist, and your stupid career'll be just fine.

[Every single word is ice cold, and he's not sorry. Once again, Ford cares more about his stupid career than his own family. He's going to get tried for murder and Ford is more worried about saving his own skin.]

[And, once again, Stanley's being irrational and jumping to conclusions and Ford can't tell if he's lying, mistaken, or trying to get a reaction out of him. It's just as exhausting as he remembers. He can't take this on. It's not just not his problem, it's dangerous. He can't get mixed up in the kinds of things Stan's been doing, and Ford's still not sure how Stan got the kids for the summer.

He's got to walk away from this, because he sure as hell doesn't know what else to do about it. He has to, and he feels...he feels guilty about it. But not guilty enough to stop their father from sending Stan away, and not guilty enough to step in here.
]

It's obvious you haven't changed a bit. So, yes, I'll go. Goodbye, Stanley. Try not to make any more trouble for yourself than you're already in.

[And he'll go.]
