With a sigh, the nation started fidgeting with his skirts. That, he thought, was an advantage to wearing them--they were so easy to play with when he got nervous, it was somehow comforting. "Waiting sucks," he muttered. "And like, how lame of me would it be to spend forever sitting around and just waiting for a guy who's never gonna like me back?"

Not that he saw much of an alternative to that. Other than saying something, losing him as a best friend, and then waiting forever for him to return his affections without any real hope of it.
