AIM Log [Complete]

Who: Aoyagi Ritsuka [livejournal.com profile] sleeping_memory and L [livejournal.com profile] detectivel
Where L's current room of residence
When: November 10th
Rating: G
Summary: Ritsuka has a few questions, unfortunately L doesn't have his answers.
the Story:

A lot of thoughts were crossing Ritsuka's mind lately. Mainly, thoughts about death. He remembered asking once if the dead could come back to life. The answer he got seemed to contradict what was happening in the mansion. He had spoken to a man who called himself L only briefly who claimed that he was dead but was some how residing in the mansion.

Naturally, Ritsuka wanted answers. He had a small feeling of hope as he searched for the room L told him to meet him in. If L was dead, then that would mean Seimei could somehow make it here...He still hadn't found Soubi. He wasn't sure if anyone he knew had made their way here. In fact, Ritsuka wasn't too sure if any of these people had lived where he once had. His mind kept going in circles. He refused to not have an answer any longer. If this was the work of Seven Moons- Ritsuka was going to have to be careful.
He finally got out of his daze and knocked on the door.

"Come in," L called absently from the other side. The room was temporary, as were every other room he had been in for as long as he was in the mansion. Both times he had died, he had woken up in the room he first came to, and had found that unsettling. So, he had been moving from room to room ever since he had first arrived, picking up the laptop he was provided with and simply relocating himself to a vacant room. All the windows seemed to reflect the same thing, however, and L supposed he really should stop looking through them so much. He was bound to go insane.

The current room was good enough, however. It was close to a few landmarks, and therefore easy to instruct others on how to visit him. Although, he didn't expect any visitors, he had managed to accumulate at least one, so the room's location had come in handy. It was certainly better than if he had been on the fourth floor in a number well past the octillions.

Ritsuka opened the door slowly, not quite sure what to expect. Peeking his head through he saw a man hunched over in sitting position. He had never seen anyone like him before. His ears fell flat, maybe he should have waited before trying to meet someone.

"Are you L?" He asked, giving him a suspicious glance. He was still at the door, holding onto the side of it, unsure whether to walk in further.

"Yes," L looked back, and shifted, turning more to the boy and curling his toes against the comforter on the bed. "And you are Ritsuka."

L folded his arms over his knees, settling his head in his arms easily and watching him more intently. The boy had sought him out, but was acting like he was somewhere he didn't want to be. It wasn't uncommon, L dealt with it a lot when people came to ask him for help. Usually, those cases weren't of much interest, though. When people were nervous, they were close to the problem that needed investigating, which could lead to problems later on.

Ritsuka watched L intently. The man did seem to have some odd habits about him. Ritsuka never saw anyone sit like that. He also looked very tired. The bags under his eyes were heavy and outlined black. "Tell me why you aren't dead." Ritsuka finally stepped inside, but remained by the door. He shut it lightly, not all the way, just in case he needed to leave quickly. Ritsuka was never one to trust easily. He still wanted answers though.

"I am dead," L corrected, raising a hand and chewing on the pad of his thumb lightly, "I thought I told you that. I never came back to life, I just came here."

Ritsuka's eyes widened, that was impossible. L couldn't be dead. "No. The dead can't.." clenching his fists lightly, Ritsuka let out an impatient grunt. "How did you get here? Why are you here? Are there any other people you know that are dead?"

"I don't know, I don't know, and yes," L replied easily, not surprised at the outburst, but not reacting to it, either. "If you ask around, there are a few people who are dead, and for your first two questions, I am trying to find out for myself."

"I want to know who they are. Tell me!" Ritsuka demanded. he was beginning to feel helpless again. He never had any answers and always had to seek them out. Not only that, but he was beginning to miss Soubi's company- even if he didn't want to admit it.

"I never cared enough about them personally to ask names," L rocked back on his heals lightly, tilting his head and watching Ritsuka. Were those...? No, couldn't be. Although, it would definitely make the task of taking on whatever job he had probably wanted L to complete more interesting.

"Why did you ask if I was a detective or not?"

"You should ask their names." Ritsuka unclenched his hands and sat down on the floor beside the door, "isn't that what detectives do?"

"If I need their names, yes. But I needed the mass majority, and names would have just been a hindrance. I needed something to compare myself to, I didn't really mind who it was," L watched Ritsuka, wondering idly if another outburst was in the midst. "Besides, I didn't care who they were, and nobody asked me to search for someone. Even if I had asked for names, I would have forgotten them, most likely."

"Detectives are supposed to remember the people they talk to. They're suppose to have a good memory." Ritsuka looked down at his feet, he thought L would be able to help him. Was it stupid to think L would have heard Seimei's name one time or another?

"Remembering trivial things is useless. You'll lose the big picture is you have nothing but insignificant details that do nothing. Most are important, yes, but these people are going nowhere, and I can ask or find out their names on my own if I so desire. And, as I said, I was looking for something to compare myself to, I was not conducting a legitimate investigation," L leaned forward, still chewing on his thumb.

"What were you hoping I had found?"

Ritsuka rocked back and forth slightly, holding onto his ankles with his hands. His mind had already begun to spin. "Nothing.." he said quietly. Ritsuka grasped for the phone that wasn't on his lanyard anymore. He kept forgetting it wasn't there at times when he wasn't thinking about it. He was so used to having it on him all the time.

"I can't help you if you won't tell the truth," L said, watching as Ritsuka seemed to be going into something akin to a nervous breakdown. What was bothering him was far from "nothing."

Ritsuka looked up at L. Part of him wanted to tell him, but the other part told him not to. what if L worked for Seven Moons? If he was a detective, then that could mean he was investigating him. "Did they send you?" Ritsuka still didn't understand that the people residing in the mansion were from different worlds.

"Who are 'they?'" L asked, shifting and decided not to ask if the boy had any connection to Kira. First of all, it was illogical; Raito would not use such an unstable boy himself. Someone working in Kira's name, maybe. He had no reason to fear for his life, but that investigation had taken up a huge portion of it, and he still felt that small tickle of adrenaline even though for him the case was solved and shut.

Then maybe he didn't know. He felt defeated, and he was beginning to feel tears in his eyes. Keeping his head down, he shut his eyes tightly which only forced a few tears to streak down his cheek. "Nevermind." He missed his friends. He had finally liked them all and he was being invited to places and asked to play. But now he was alone. Just like he had been when Seimei died.

L watched Ritsuka, he wasn't moving, which was good for an examination of his head. Looked like he really had...

"Your ears," L asked, moving his free hand and pointing at them to confirm, "How did you get those?"

Wiping away any tears that he had left Ritsuka continued to keep his head down. However, when L asked him about his ears, Ritsuka picked up his head quickly. That was a stupid question and it offended Ritsuka that L would even ask that. Seeing that L didn't have his ears anymore, he was just another sick adult. "Don't look at me.' he shot at L.

"Why not?" L asked, interested at how Ritsuka was acting now that he had asked about the ears, "Nobody where I come from has ears like that, why shouldn't I be interested in it?"

"What?" What did L mean by that. Everyone where Ritsuka was from was born with ears. They lost them once they had become sexually mature and found their true love.

"Nobody has ears like that," L repeated, and tilted his head, "And, unless I simply cannot see it from this angle, they seem to be actually attached to you, and not part of a costume."

"Everyone has ears like this when they're born. Stop pretending like you don't know!" Ritsuka jumped up from his spot on the floor.

"Only where you come from," L brushed his hair from the side of his head and away from his ear, "Where I come from, everyone is born like this, and stay like this, unless they have surgery."

Ritsuka watched L, wondering what exactly was going on. Maybe the mansion was under a spell...a very strong one. Or maybe Ritsuka was in another dream. "Tell me where you come from? I want to know."

"When I died I was in Japan," L flicked his hair back into place and put his arm over his knees again, "I was after a genocidal maniac the public named Kira. Do you know who Kira is?"

Ritsuka blinked, L was from the same place he was from. "Kira?" He never heard of that person before. From the derivation of the name, Ritsuka immediately thought of killer.

"Yes. He had the power to kill by causing heart attacks, and used it primarily on convicted criminals, and people who got in his way" L chewed on the tip of his thumb and added, "Where I come from, everyone knows about Kira. He is on the internet, the news, and talked about on the streets."

More confused than before, Ritsuka didn't know what to say. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out of it. Letting out a soft sigh, Ritsuka turned around to open the door. He doubted he would get any immediate answers from L.

"You reacted negatively to the fact that I did not know about your ears," L said after Ritsuka as he left, not going to keep the boy if he wanted to leave but deciding to let him off with a bit of information, "But, I could have done the same when I told you about Kira. We are not from the same place, and while you may find people who are from your world, most of the people here will not be. You cannot classify them to the same standards as you did yourself and those around you before."
