Here they sang about tomorrow and tomorrow never came | (Future) James Potter Catch-All

Who: (Future) James Potter [[personal profile] pottershotter] and OPEN
Where: All over the place!
When: Most of the end of December!
Rating: Anywhere from PG to R
Summary: James comes back to the past a little...different. A little tired and war-torn.
The Story:

1. Arrival.

It's very late when James returns. Around midnight at least. It's very sudden – one moment there's nothing and then, suddenly, James.

He does not walk into the past. No, instead he stumbles, losing his footing and landing face-first in the snow. He stays there for a beat too, but then he suddenly pushes himself up on his palms with a start. There's nothing quite as sobering as cold snow in the face. He slips, but uses that fall to roll himself on his back and stare up at the winter night sky, breathing hard and watching his breath puff out in clouds.

...It's winter. With snow. It's been forever since Wonderland had enough magic for snow.

For a split second, his heart flutters and he wonders if he's somehow made it home. But he scratches that pretty quickly – the mansion looming in the distance is a fairly big clue. It still doesn't make any sense though. Even if he closes his eyes, he can feel the earth beneath him moving, swaying...but, that's not it. It all feels too real.

At which point, it finally sinks in that it's really bloody cold out and he's not dressed for the weather at all.

He stretches out his limbs, makes something of a snow angel, and uses the newly flattened snow to push himself upright. Once he's standing, he stares at the mansion. It's fully lit. No missing patches of light from where the electricikity stopped working.

Walking in the snow feels funny, both from drunkeness and the fact that it's been so long since he's done it. He crosses his arms in front of him and marches toward the mansion, with what he hopes is minimal swaying (but probably isn't). Even if there's no working closets to give him dry clothes, it'll still be warmer than staying out in the weather.

2. Next Morning

James wakes up incredibly hungover. But he also wakes up in his bed as it was five years ago, which is strange enough to make him crawl out of bed to investigate everything else. He wasn't really in a good state for it the night before, and in the light of morning, with a pounding headache, there are so many more things to notice.

His desk is a mess, full of notes to be put into the Map – the map he has in his back pocket, completely finished. His wand is on the bedside table, which is just odd because it's also over on the desk, forgotten. There's also a second pair of glasses on that table, as if someone stole him away in the night. It's too eerie. There are thousands of little differences that jump out at him, and all he can do is stare until he can't handle it anymore.

The closets haven't worked in so long that it actually takes him a moment to think of clothing to ask for.

As soon as he is dressed, he leaves for...well, anywhere. To the kitchen first though, to test the cupboards and to find something to eat that will make him feel a little less like he's dying. Immediately though, he scolds himself for phrasing it that way.

It's something he's done a thousand times before. It was a daily ritual to walk down to the kitchen and fetch something to eat, before the magic for it started to run out. But now he feels like he's having a very strange dream of life many years ago. He's still unsure what's happened exactly, or why he's here. It's definitely the past. There's no question of it.

But there's this pit in his stomach that saps at his hunger, and whispers that he really doesn't deserve to be there. Why should he get to be comfortable when the others are suffering a few years away?

3. Ghosts

He might be in the past, but he can't escape what's going to happen in the future. Then again, hasn't it always been that way for James?

The first time he sees one of the ghosts, he's certain he's lost his mind, that he's starting to see things. That nightmares he's been having have jumped out of him somehow and started to walk around during the day. He hasn't seen a single one through to the end – he always turns away, apparates, even runs if he has to, if he thinks it will get him away faster.

Some of them are so traumatic that he has to shut himself away anywhere (empty room, closet, under a table and hidden by the tablecloth) until his heart stops racing and the panic passes. He shuts his eyes and breathes and breathes and breathes until fear very suddenly morphs into tiredness and a deep shame. He's not supposed to be like this. He's a Gryffindor; he's not supposed to be cowering in a corner! He's supposed to stand strong and proud, even when he's afraid.

He feels like a coward, and it just makes everything cycle. He's angry at and ashamed of himself. He can feel it creep into his thoughts every time he tries to prove to someone that he's fine, that he's completely fine. That he's more than fine and that he could fight if they needed him to. But any time something comes up, he feels paralyzed.

Eventually, he's able to get up and wander away numbly, but once he encounters a ghost of the future he makes ridiculous efforts to avoid them from then on.

4. Nights.

James has always been a little restless at night. However, this typically came from an over-active mind that just didn't want to sleep through anything. James could be up half the night pondering things and planning plans and sneaking off to the kitchens for a midnight snack. But it never felt like a problem exactly.

It's quickly become one though. Now he can lie awake at night for hours and hours, thinking about how things could have gone differently. Things he could have done to save everyone. Wondering what Souji would think if he knew he couldn't protect George, that he had been too weak and too shocked by Souji's horrible death-

He has horrific nightmares.

It leads to a lot off wandering around at night, in an effort to do anything but sit alone with his thoughts and to protect himself from the things he recalls when he's asleep. It's a little easier when he's drunk; then he can usually just pass out and not worry about it. But he can't be drunk constantly.

So on nights when he isn't drunk, he walks around the mansion, carefully avoiding ghosts and admiring the warm glow of the Christmas lights. It's been so long that they actually bring him a weird sort of peace.

5. Other.

James can be found in a variety of places over the course of the event, including (but not limited to) in the bar, in the kitchens, or out on the grounds. This is a catch-all for the event and I'll take threads happening at any point during it! Also, feel free to use [action brackets] if you prefer. ♥

[He shrugs.]

No reason to expect anyone else would be up and about this late.

[There's a hint of a question there. An invitation.]

...You're one of the folks who went missing, right?

[So there wasn't any lapse for the time-travelers. Duly noted.]

You didn't have any warning of what was going to happen at all?

Sounds rough.

[Like showing up in Wonderland in the first place--but worse, because no one has answers for you.]

I mean--I've been chasing ghosts around all night, putting pieces together. And there've been a few of you on the network to fill in the rest. Grim stuff.

You mean...distance covered? Just the first few floors.

[Which doesn't sound like much, but that's a lot of fiddly little tea rooms and blind corners. And, well--]

The library's pretty darn haunted. You've probably noticed.

Well, they're doing a good job. It's pretty hard not to get the message.
