maybe you're looking for someone to blame

Who: Regina Mills & Henry Mills | Regina Mills & Neal Cassidy
Where: Henry's room | Neal's room
When: October 13th | October 10th
Rating: PG-ish
Summary: After Henry's birthday party, Regina wants to do something special. | In things we never thought would happen, Regina seeks Neal out for advice.
The Story:

HENRY | October 13th

[The party had been fine, if a little awkward. There hadn't been fighting of any kind, so Regina's inclined to call it a win, personally. But it hadn't been enough. For everything Henry has been through lately, both here and back in Storybrooke, a party isn't good enough. Not for the son of a queen/mayor.

The morning of the 13th, she makes her way down to the vendors. It goes against everything she and Emma had decided, but some things are worth it. (Henry. Only Henry is worth it.) She has one thing in mind for her trip down there: Henry's book. She might not be overly fond of it, but it's important to Henry. Therefore, trading something to the vendors to get it back is okay with her.

It doesn't take all that long to get the book. A few demands, some light haggling, and she walks away one memory lighter and weighed down by a book. There's no point flicking through it, she knows her own story and doesn't exactly care for anybody else's. By the time she makes it to Henry's room, she's stopped off in her own room to wrap it. It's fairly obvious what it is, but surely the gesture counts.

When she knocks on Henry's door, it's hidden behind her back kind of awkwardly.]

---------------------

NEAL | October 10th

[Life is awful. Not that her life has ever been great, but it had been steadily improving lately. Only for Miss Swan to ruin everything. Again. She's not entirely to blame though, it was Regina's choice to withhold information from Robin. Now she's paying the price for her actions.

If they were in Storybrooke, maybe it would easier because Marian would be an actual physical presence instead of something that has yet to happen for her, and something that has already happened for him. Or maybe it would be harder for the exact same reason, not that they'll ever know. But she can't sit around in her room feeling miserable for herself, and yet she doesn't know how to move past it.

Someone from Storybrooke does, though. Maybe. The jury is still out, but it's her only lead so far. Regina never thought she'd be going to Neal for advice, but Wonderland seems to be opening new doors every day. Besides, she should probably be on mildly pleasant terms with him because of Henry.

Early in the afternoon she knocks on Neal's door and waits.]

[For some reason, he's not expecting to see his mom. Not that he minds at all, it was just...with the singing and everything, it was maybe too awkward. Except it could have been over for all Henry knew. Other than go to his dad's for the weekend, Henry's stayed holed up in his room. So when he opens his door Regina gets a smile. And he has furniture now, he thinks she'll be proud he's graduated from lawn chairs.]

Mom, what are you doing here?

[It's a happy question, and he stands to the side a little to let her in.]

[He doesn't really hear anything else because that gift is only the size and shape for one thing, and he takes it, looking up at her with wide eyes before tearing off enough wrapping to reveal the title. And his smile is so big until he realizes his book wasn't in the library, and no matter how many times he'd tried, it hadn't come through the closet. So, the smile dims a little.]

Mom, this is great. It's the only thing from my room I've really wanted. [Good reaction first.]

But...how did you get it?

[He knows how she got it.]

[She's right to keep him from interrupting because he does open his mouth. But when she's done he's still worried. What if they took something good? He isn't sure she has a lot of those.]

Do they tell you what they take before they take it, and let you decide if you still wanna do it?

[That might make him feel a little better if so.]

[Sitting down on the couch, he unwraps the book the rest of the way. He figures she wouldn't have let go of any memories of the two of them. And it's selfish probably to be glad about that, but he is. Opening the book, he flips through, and then looks up at her again.]

It's the original version. [Which isn't a complaint at all, just an observation.] Emma's not in it.

[For a second he wonders how Regina actually feels about the book, and he look up at her.]

I know it isn't really fair. About you, I mean. [As if he'd written it or had any control over it. But he'd believed it, for a long time, that she was only evil.] Maybe it's not fair that I like having it so much, either. [Fair to her, he means, because he realizes it's a reminder of what made things so bad between them to begin with.]

[Henry listens, looking up at her, and he gets that, he won't be the one to sugar coat what she did. But he's older now. He understands more.]

But you did good things, too. Things that should be in a book. You saved me in Neverland, you beat Zelena. And then there's all the stuff from when I was small. We had a lot of good times.

[Before he pulled away. He remembers playing in the park, and making cookies, and his little step stool in the kitchen.]
henrydaniel: (believing in mama)

eh, lol things happen. And we can fade if you want.

[personal profile] henrydaniel 2014-11-22 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I do know. [And soon she's going to have a better book. One she can be proud of. He's so excited that he can't contain a smile, though he makes sure he doesn't say anything that makes what he's doing too obvious.]

I like it when you tell me stuff, even if you think it's boring. [He shrugs a little because that seems sort of maybe lame, but he really does want to know her better.]

Because I know you're more than just what's in here. [Well, he knows it now.]
henrydaniel: (mama)

[personal profile] henrydaniel 2014-11-26 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
She knows. Just...not right now. But you know she knows, since we're from the future. Kind of.

...Right?

[It's confusing. But he reaches out and covers her hand with his.]

Mom, I do wanna hear them. I'd rather hear stuff from you than read it in the book.
henrydaniel: (just chilin and talkin)

[He opens the book across his lap and flips the pages, landing on one with Jefferson.]

The book says you went to Wonderland - the one from our world - and then abandoned the Hatter there. Why did you go if your mom was there?

[The book, of course, doesn't tell any of the reason why his mom went to begin with, but he thinks it has to be a good reason if she went to a place where her mom was.]

So, I'm named after a really good person in your life.

[Henry is so pleased by this, to know that she named him not randomly, but after someone she loved, a lot. He's always known it was her father, but not that they were that close.]

I wish I could have met him.

[He also knows he's dead, knows it's his coffin in the mausoleum, though he doesn't know how he died. But that doesn't seem like something Henry needs to ask, so he doesn't.]

[personal profile] henrydaniel 2014-12-04 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you mean we both never gave up on you?

[Because he kinda did, but he never, ever will again. Also he was only ten, and he feels like things changed a lot in three years.]

Did he like stories and stuff too? [He never really thought before to ask about her dad, but it makes sense. She has to have good memories with him if she wanted to use his for her son, right? He hopes, anyway.]
belovedson: (we're doing it this way)

[Things Neal isn't expecting? This. So he's not exactly being subtle about the surprise when he opens his door and finds Regina standing there. They aren't bitter enemies, sure, but they also don't exactly talk much. Or ever. Certainly not without Henry in the room.]

Uh, hey Regina. [He glances up and down the hall, figuring the kid must be there. When he isn't though, Neal gets a little worried.] Is Henry okay?

[Seriously, why else would she be here?]
belovedson: (this is what you offer?)

[personal profile] belovedson 2014-10-23 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
Something else. [Yeah, Neal's not exactly getting it just yet. But on the plus side, his jaw doesn't actually drop when Regina pulls back the curtain. It might have been tempting, but Neal manages to keep his reaction to widened eyes.]

You want advice from me? [Seriously though, he'd expect her to go to Zelena or something before she came knocking on his door. No one would call them friends, definitely not Neal himself, and he's sure Regina wouldn't either.

Still, she's putting a lot of effort into this. Regina's never struck him as the sort to do something without reason. So he gets over it enough to move out of her way, holding the door open for her.]

Uh, sure. Come in, I guess? [His room is neat enough for company, at least. If Henry talked about Neal's place in New York, Regina might realize she's walking into a replica of that now.]
belovedson: (coconuts aren't crazy dude)

[personal profile] belovedson 2014-10-27 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
[Yeah, she's right; Neal will kick her out if she starts acting like an ass, for the record. Luckily for them both he's got a pretty high tolerance for that sort of thing, so he can ignore the way she glares at his room. It's comfortable for him, what he thinks of as home.

Besides, she isn't allowed to give the display of old clocks judgmental looks; Henry collects them too.

Luckily for them both, she gets into her reason for being there pretty quick. Neal's barely got the door shut when she starts asking about Robin. It's not hard to guess the anything she's looking for, and he turns around to face her, hands on his hips.]

You mean the part about where he's in love with you, but his formerly dead wife is back and it's tearing him up inside? [Hey, he's not going to sugarcoat it.] He might have mentioned that, yeah.
