Summary: Henry returns post 4x12 - spoilers for the most recent OUAT episode
The Story:

Regina

There was no memory of Wonderland in Storybrooke. One moment Henry was heading to bed in his room at the mansion, the next he was standing outside of 108 Mifflin and demanding Regina let him inside. He was convinced now, all that she needed was for someone to not give up on her, and it became pretty clear that he could be that person when Robin couldn't. Except Henry really liked the way Robin made his mom smile, and he liked Robin himself, and Roland. So needless to say, when they left Storybrooke forever because of Ingrid, it sucked for lack of a better word. He felt for his mom, wanted to be there for her and was more determined than ever to find something to help. Was he supposed to be trespassing in the big mansion he couldn't remember ever seeing before? Probably not. But something in his gut told him that the answers were all here. And when he finds shelves and shelves of blank books just like his, he knows he's hit jackpot.

But, there's school to go to, more birds to learn about apparently, and for a while, things are just normal. He likes normal. He likes working with Regina, he likes hanging out with Emma, visiting his grandparents and getting to play favorite uncle to baby Neal. Or something - was it uncle? He has no idea. In any case, it's normal and nice.

And then the two biggest jerks he's pretty sure he's ever met make it into Storybrooke. Cruella De Vil just seems...a little unhinged, and Ursula he isn't sure about yet. But he instantly doesn't like them for the things they say. He leaves when Regina asks him to, knowing she wants to protect him. When he steps outside of the diner again though, it's back into Wonderland. For a second he freezes, just looking around a little until it all clicks into place again. The Queen of Hearts and Alice and mirrors and Jabberwockys. But more importantly, his family. And he remembers Regina left and came back so he takes off running to find her, not even bothering to knock before he bursts into her room. He doesn't even bother to think about the fact that it was dark outside or what time at night it might be.

"Mom? Are you here?"

Neal

After his mom is filled in, when he finds out Emma left about the same time he did, he's not worried. Now that he's experienced it himself, and he knows all of Emma's stuff is still here, he knows it's all okay. But he knows his dad is still here, and there's a twinge of guilt at forgetting him, even though it definitely isn't his fault he did. He's also more aware of the time now and this time knocks on the door, waiting to be let in. He can't wait to tell him about everything that's happened, and Elsa and Anna, and everything.

Everyone else, other family and friends

And now he's starving. He never did get those chocolate frosted donuts for breakfast, and now it's even way past dinner. He makes his way up to the diner, relieved when he finds it still open, then makes his way back down and kind of around the mansion, looking to see if anything had changed, but being wary of anything he doesn't recognize right away just in case it turns him into something. He's not ready to be muppet-ized again or something.

I hope you're right about that, lad. [The signs all do look right for Emma returning. But he doesn't trust Wonderland to behave in any sort of predictable fashion. He hopes she comes back. But he's too afraid to count on it.]

I've been taking care of the dog while you were both gone.

You helped me feel better when Regina left, and you were right. [There's that unwavering belief in people, and Henry can repay that to Hook now.] She's coming back, I know it. But until she does, why don't you keep him. I mean, it'll probably only be another day, but.

[Killian can keep Lucky as long as he needs to have him around. And then he remembers what helped him, distractions, and he manages a smile at him.]

Have you ever had a milkshake? I can't remember if you have or not, but you should. It's what I'm gonna have with my fries.

A... milkshake? [Killian shakes his head.] Can't say I have. Why would one shake milk? Does it add to the flavor?

[Henry grins, because he gets to be the one to introduce this to him.]

C'mon, Killian. You're about to have something amazing. I'll fill you in on everything.

[He doesn't want to ruin the surprise by explaining what a milkshake is, also because he has no idea why it's not just called an ice cream drink or something. He doesn't know why the 'shake' part so hey, avoidance!]

If you say so, lad. [He shakes his head, but he looks more amused than anything else, and considering what a week it's been, that's a nice change of pace. He stands up, giving Lucky a few pats on the head.] Where do we find these milkshakes?

Up in the diner, hopefully. Or we can just go to the dining room. But...I kind of like sitting in the diner. Is that okay with you?

[The diner reminds him of home, just a little, even though it's not exactly the same. It's still sliding into a booth and comfort food.]

Sure, lad. You know a lot about shook milk than I do. If the diner's where we ought to get it, then the diner it is.

[Leading the way, Henry slips into a booth once they're in the diner, and he orders fries plus a burger and the milkshakes for both of them. While they wait, he decides to fill Killian in on a few things.]

So, the last thing that happened to you is the hand thing, right?

[He's for sure not gonna be the one to tell him the hand's gone again, though.]

[Killian wiggles his fingers and smirks.] What gave it away?

[Henry grins and then takes a breath. No hand mention, but he kind of can't avoid the Rumple thing.]

Okay, so...Rumplestiltskin had to leave Storybrooke. He has a magic hat that he can trap other magic inside to make it really powerful, and he trapped all the fairies. So Belle used his dagger and kind of...commanded him to leave. You and Belle worked together a lot to figure out how to save them, and you did! You guys told my moms how to free the fairies.

Regina told me about Belle banishing the Dark One. But... how did he trap the fairies? They're powerful beings in their own right.

In some kind of hat.

[Henry is sooooo not telling you about the heart control thing. Sorry :\ ]

I think he just needed all of that magic. But I don't know what he was doing with it.

[Regina already tipped him off to that bit of unpleasantness, so he's well aware.]

He's the Dark One. He always craves more power.

I guess....I was kind of hoping with what happened to my dad, he really did want to change. That he wanted to be one of the good guys.

[It makes his heart twist a little. For all that Henry's seen and grown, he still sees the best in people. It's a good thing, he supposes, but it also makes Henry very vulnerable to disappointment. And hoping for the best in Rumplestiltskin can lead to nothing but disappointment.]

No, lad. What happened to your father took away his reason to change. [There was still Belle, but she wasn't enough, apparently.]

[He'll learn. Eventually Henry will learn that after a chance, after repeated chances, maybe some people just won't change.]

I don't know if he'll ever change. But at least no one's letting him get away with hurting people.

That much, you can count on. [He gives the boy an encouraging smile.] So long as your family's around, we'll stop anyone with ill-intentions.

[When their food arrives, it's the milkshakes that are most important first, and he unwraps straws for them, plopping one into each cup.]

This is a milkshake. Probably the only thing anyone should ever drink with a burger and fries.

[At least Killian has been in the modern world long enough to learn about straws. He raises an eyebrow at Henry and wisely refrains from mentioning rum would probably go well with the burger as well. He doesn't really want his girlfriend to kill him, after all....]

All right... [He takes a careful sip.] It tastes like ice cream, only a bit more... liquid.

[Try convincing him rum is great with food in about eight years. That's not too long to wait, right?]

Yeah, like ice cream you can drink. Mom - Emma - and I, this is sort of one of the lunches o dinners we get together the most.

[He's smiling, because some of his first real memories with Emma are going to Granny's to get this exact meal.]

One time, we had french fries for breakfast. It was awesome.

Emma likes this? [He smiles a little and takes another sip.] Does she put cinnamon on this beverage as well?

No, but they do make ice cream with cinnamon already in it. What I like to do, is dip my fries in it. But the fries have to start out as really crispy, otherwise they're just soggy and it's kind of gross.

Fried potatoes in ice cream. [Killian takes one of his fries, considering it for a moment before he tries it. He bites off the ice creamy mess, then nods.] A mix of salty and sweet. Not bad.

[Henry is actually loving this, he's always liked hanging out with Hook, and he grins. Yeah. He's glad people are still here.]

So, I have a question.

[He takes a bite of food though, winding up for this one. And this is based purely on observation, pushing his mom to go on a date, and the fact that in the six weeks he was gone, he saw his mom and Hook kissing more times than a teenage boy cares about.]

Do you...love my mom?

[Killian has taken a sip of his milkshake, and the question surprises him enough that he starts choking a little. He swallows hurriedly and looks up at Henry.]

I... beg pardon?

[He heard, he's just having some difficulty believing Henry just asked what it sounds like he asked.]
