Summary: ITS A HALLOWEEN PARTY
The Story:

[it's no secret that halloween is april's favorite holiday - she'd been planning this since her network post in september. she'd been ignoring the network and the tapping on her own mirrors in favor of just having this one stupid thing, and she really does go all out. it's a testament to the fact that when april puts her mind to something she can do anything she wants (with the help of a few gracious wonderlanders, and the magic here) and somewhere, leslie is just so proud, she's probably exploding. gross.

when characters arrive, they'll find the ballroom transformed into a creepy halloween paradise - tons of pumpkins, fake spider web (or is it???), fake dead bodies (or are they???), and a plethora of other decorations carefully handpicked by april. she didn't just ask the ballroom to do this, she worked out every detail.

there's an open bar and more candy than you ever needed in your life, plus a bunch of different Halloween themed food (spagehtti for brains, apples for bobbing). there's a dance floor playing a mix of mostly halloween music but also some other stuff even she can concede her taste in german death reggae isn't for everyone. and honestly, she actually wants people to have a really good time.

april is dressed up as moritica addams from the addams family and will actually be around mingling with people and being sociable - maybe that's the true horror of the holiday.]

[Evelyn is, in the parlance of her brother, taking the piss out of Angel because he looks like one of those statues you might see looming over a grave in a cemetery. Overly familiar with investigators of a brooding and quiet stock (particularly those with the fashion sense of a farmhand and/or funeral director) Evelyn is of the mind that they often need to be knocked down a peg or two out of necessity.]

With my...extensive experience in Wonderland's manipulation of the holidays I think it's safe to say that something will probably go dreadfully wrong and leave us all in the lurch, but until then I might as well enjoy the music and try not to look as though being present is causing me physical pain.

[Evelyn raises an eyebrow. Looking at you, pal.]

Then that explains all of this. Halloween party planner.

( Lydia may be taking a walk around the room to look at more of the stuff, and she definitely expects April to follow )

[Wirt doesn't often have reason to bust out the fact that he's older than Dipper and Mabel, but...now and then it just comes up naturally.]

What, does he think he's too old to dress up for Halloween or something?

[This clearly isn't an issue in Wirt's teenage years, seeing as he not only dressed up for Halloween but then proceeded to wear said costume for a year afterwards while stuck in another dimension.

...Alright, maybe Wirt's not the best example, but he still thinks it's a little funny that Dipper thinks he's too old for it.]

I'll take that as a compliment.

[Another man might be jealous but James just laughs along.]

We'll just have to stick together then, won't we? That way you'll always know which Prongs is your Prongs.

[It's a little silly though - after all, he'd planned on sticking by her side either way. It's just another excuse to do so.]

[she's not big on being told what to do but lydia gives her that creepy focus so one turn deserves another and she'll follow for now]

I'll watch your back so you don't get murdered.

[He could do with a little more harassment, truth be told. Faith does her part now and then, but without Cordelia here, it's been far too easy for him to fall back into old habits-- bad ones, the sort that make him withdraw and lose his all-too-important connection with humanity.]

I try. Being straightforward seems to work better for me.

[And better for Evie, too, apparently-- he looks sheepish even as he reaches back to rub at the back of his neck, awkward.]

I-- look, I'm not--

[He is. He knows exactly what he looks like most of the time, despite not being able to make use of a mirror.]

That's just my face.

Well-- not quite.

[Some, though-- but that's more a side effect of what comes next.]

Vampire, actually. I, uh-- metabolize alcohol too quickly for it to do much good.

[No, it's not a bad idea, but...something about it still rubs him the wrong way. It's not the party aspect, no - James loves parties, and he's sure Lily would be on board, but...even after all this time, he doesn't like planning that far ahead. They still need to go home and fix things. He can't just stay in Wonderland forever, and committing to a party that wouldn't be for at least a few months feels wrong, like he's promising to stay. Of course, he has no control over that whatsoever but it still doesn't sit right.]

New Year's will be fantastic, I'm sure. Hm...we'll see about other holidays when the time comes, I think. Though, if we're making up holidays, I ought to leave that to you and Sam and-- I dunno. Anyone else who's planing on staying here as long as they can.

[He's still trying to keep that smile, but it's definitely a bit of an awkward subject.]

I'd say you should try other parties, because we definitely need more around here, but I'm not sure if creepy Christmas is what everyone wants.

A vampire?

[ Natasha gives it, oh, maybe 0.03 of a second to be appropriately surprised, then her gaze turns curious. ]

Where are you getting blood from?

[excuse you, mabel pines is always 100% sincere, you bridge troll. :|]

Nope! It's like I planned ahead for the lizard invasion. Nothing can get through this impenetrable shield dress!

[She frowns at his assessment and picks up an abandoned fork on the floor and proceeds to test his theory. The fork makes a satisfying pinging noise that lights her face up.] What d'you know? I'm the drum of the lizardpocalypse!

As far as I know, the only person you tried to hurt was me.

[Something he doesn't seem all that troubled by in and of itself. He could take a few hits-- more than a few, if he was being honest.

He watches her carefully, hears her heart speed up in her chest as panic begins to rear its ugly head, frowning as he remains a foot or so away from the bars.]

Hey-- it's okay. You didn't end up hurting anyone. Take a deep breath, alright?

[A panicked Faith is never good news, though it's been a long time since he's smelled this kind of fear coing off of her.]

The pantry and closets are pretty good about providing it. Before here, I had a deal with the local butcher.

[He pauses, just for a beat.]

I don't drink people. Pig's blood, mostly.

Preeetty much. [Mabel looks Wirt over, realizing what he must mean by that, and shrugs.]

Guess you're not Dipper's ideal of what a "normal teenager" looks like. [scoff. because wirt is a perfectly normal teenager to her, except for the crippling anxiety part, but well... Thompson exists.]

[She gets it, even if he doesn't say it outright. This is one of those things where they've had to decide to agree to disagree, but even then, she'd like to think that each of them understands where the other is coming from. Their circumstances are different-- and here, that means a lot.]

I'll let Sam know that's all him. [She has enough on her plate anyway. And while she knows James doesn't want to be here any longer than he has to be-- she has to admit, she's glad to hear him speak highly of New Year's, all things considered.]

We're actually thinking of having the wedding on New Year's Eve. People could probably use the pick-me-up around then, and-- kind of a significant date for us, I guess.

[She's really nowhere near as good at gushing as James is.]

[Shush, just take your suck up points and be happy with them.]

That's great, Sweetie. Exactly what I was hopin' to hear.

[Because you see, the lizards are starting to swarm again. This party is quickly descending into reptilian chaos and they need to scram. So Stan takes her firmly by the shoulders and turns her around, and without actually explaining his plan he shouts over her head and into the crowd.]

Alright, everyone outta the way! Steel drum band comin' through, MOVE IT! One, two, three, four!

[And Stan starts nudging her forward like she's a riot shield and smacking the side of her skirt with his pitchfork. He's not really a musician, but his aim is less to sound good and more to be as loud as possible, to try and startle any lizards and stragglers out of their path. And hey, if that doesn't work he can always hoist Mabel up and run like hell.]

That's an excellent idea.

[She links their arms together, sliding closer to him so that their hips touch.]

I don't think I could have come up with a better solution myself if I'd tried.

[ it feels like instinct the way faith sucks in air at the man's suggestion. slow, like she's done it a million times. muscle memory forces her to let it out slow, taking another once her lungs are empty. ]

You put me here?

[ her heart can't slow down, not entirely. the prospect of being put in a cage by some guy really doesn't promote inner peace. not alongside the flashes of memory that woke her only a few minutes ago. ]

Creepy Christmas sounds like the best thing ever. Thanks for this great idea.

[ I don't drink people. Natasha didn't ask for a justification or an explanation, or which blood, specifically — Angel filled that in himself. The qualifier is unnecessary: it says simply, don't think of me as a monster, and if you do, I'm friendly. ]

Now I really believe them when they say the closets provide everything.

[Fortunately, Mabel is an expert in running around in attire that it should be feasibly impossible to run around in, so as Stan clangs away, she proceeds to whack any lizards that aren't deterred by the sound with her plunger.]

Watch your heads! Flying lizards incoming! [WHACK. She winces as one lizard strikes somebody and calls out, in an attempt to be supportive.] Walk it off! I think they're allergic to a lack of fear!

[maybe...]

[If this was coming from someone he didn't know very well, Wirt probably wouldn't fight it. Yes, clearly he's some kind of weirdo who doesn't fit in yep that all sounds accurate. But since this is about Dipper, Wirt gasps, highly offended.]

What? I-I'm-- I count as a normal teenager! I mean, normal is subjective and all, but still...

[That startles a laugh out of Billy.] I'm not sure but that's a fantastic idea. If I see him I'll tell him. [Or just wish him into a Leia costume. That would work too.]

[That's fine, because James can easily gush enough for both of them. His whole face brightens at the news.]

On New Year's Eve? That's so soon! You're getting married in two months; that's incredible!

[Apparently not looking forward to planning holidays doesn't count when your friends are getting married.]

I suppose no one'll ever forget your anniversary! [He laughs.] New Year's is a good time for it though! I've always liked that one here. Time's not supposed to be moving, but everyone tells Wonderland to sod off and celebrates the new year anyhow. Sounds like the perfect time for a wedding, really!

[Because what's more defiant of Wonderland than the conscious decision to get married there, to choose to be happy and in love in the face of everything it throws their way? It sounds absolutely brilliant to James.]

[He playfully pretends he has to think about that.]

Hm...maybe not, but I'm sure you'd've come up with one just as good if you wanted.

[This one is just fine with him though - close together with the love of his life, making what's scheduled to be the worst day of his life something happy, comforting, and full of love.]
