I'm cold as cold as cold can be | OPEN
Who: Wirt [
singloversing] and YOU
Where: All over the place! See prompts for more details.
When: All event
Rating: PG-13-ish for nearly freezing to death. Twice.
Summary: Wirt spends some quality time in Narnia, is put under the Yuki Onna's spell, and then nearly dies of hypothermia indoors somehow - a catch-all for the event!
The Story:
12/12 - 12/13 | Wirt's Room/Wardrobe | OTA
[For the first couple of days, Wirt is thoroughly distracted by the appearance of a wardrobe in his room. It actually looks a lot nicer in the space than his closet did, since it matches the antique feel of the other pieces of furniture, and the book nerd in him is pleased - after all, it looks like the Wardrobe, the one C.S. Lewis wrote about.
But then he opens it and finds a passage, exactly like what someone would imagine from those books.
He can't resist that kind of temptation. Without thinking much about consequences (which is probably unwise, considering that he's already two worlds away from home) he slips inside, and sure enough on the other side of the wardrobe is Lantern Waste. The whole thing is fascinating, and Wirt can't help wandering around through the snow. Even the lamp post is the same - growing out of the ground and ever-lit, just like in the story. The table of Turkish Delight is a little more suspicious though, and being familiar with both the Chronicles of Narnia and Alice in Wonderland is enough for Wirt to pass on trying it. He'll just...go ahead and ignore that Eat Me sign.
Even without the influence of the candy, Wirt spends a lot of time in Narnia while the Wardrobe is there. It's...less populated than he would have expected, but honestly he enjoys that about it. This world is quiet and serene. If someone comes looking for him at just the right time, they may hear music drifting into his room from the wardrobe. But, there's only so much he can do in a world completely devoid of others, so eventually he leaves it behind, and returns to Wonderland for good - and that's when he finally realizes Beatrice seems to be missing.]
12/18 | First Floor/The Grounds (Night) | OTA-ish
(ooc: -ish is because Beatrice is going to be the one to ultimately save him, but anyone else is welcome to run into him as long as they don't mind not being able to keep him away from the pretty ghost lady.)
[Wirt had been intrigued by the Saturnalia invitation, but he did not last even two seconds at the party. Sure, bringing old Roman traditions to Wonderland sounded fascinating, but he took one look at the insanity happening inside and decided that absolutely wasn't for him. So instead, he headed down to the first floor with every intention of getting something to eat somewhere much quieter.
The temperature drops about thirty degrees when he steps off the stairs though, and a chill runs through him. He's about to complain to himself about it, but he stops and stares. Beside the Christmas tree in the foyer, there's a pale young woman in a flowing white robe...watching him. For a moment he watches her too, captivated by her...then cautiously, he moves closer. He can't look away from her, and he can't imagine ever wanting to, but he fears she might flee. Maybe she can't feel the same instant connection that's taken over his mind and his heart, gripping both and pulling him along step by step.]
...Uh. Hi? I-I don't-- I don't think I've seen you here before. Um. ...hi.
[The girl seems amused by him at least, but in a good way. Wirt's sure he heard her laugh, but it was so quiet that he can't recall the sound. Everything about her is quiet in a way that makes Wirt want to listen more closely, and if he blinks she might disappear forever.
Then, she turns and moves so smoothly away that she might as well be gliding, and Wirt's feet move before he even realizes he wants to follow. He's absolutely fascinated by her, entranced both literally and metaphorically. Without breaking his gaze, he lets her lead him on and on - and right out of the mansion, into the cold, dark night. It's freezing out, especially in her company, but Wirt does not seem to mind. He is not even remotely dressed for a walk in the snow, but he wraps his arms around himself beneath his cape and presses on. The beautiful woman, the Yuki Onna, slows her walk just enough to keep them just a few feet apart, and Wirt finds the silence between them eerily comfortable. There's no need for words and just being with her is enough warmth for him.
...Of course, poetic as that is, it's not actually true. He may be ignoring it, but he's shivering already.]
12/19-12/20 | Assorted Places (Library, kitchen, etc) | OTA
[Beatrice successfully managed to pry Wirt away from the Yuki-Onna, but...strangely, even coming back inside didn't warm him at all. He spends all of the nineteeth shivering and cold, even though he's been away from the Yuki Onna long enough to not feel her influence on him. He puts on a sweater beneath his cape and a thick pair of gloves, but nothing makes any difference at all.
At first, it's easy enough to just suffer through it - he assumes it must be part of an event. It has to be, right? Why else would it be so cold? He doesn't feel sick, not really. It quickly becomes apparent though that most people don't appear to be freezing. Why is he the only one having such a hard time? He actually debates heading down to the clinic, but decides against it. It's probably not even that cold. He's probably just...making too big a deal about it.
He spends the next two days mostly in the library, curled up in a chair in an effort to generate some body heat. He often stops and heads down to the kitchen, in the hopes that moment might warm him up (it doesn't) and to get himself more warm tea (which also doesn't help). It's strange. He's so sure he's doing all the right things...why isn't he getting warmer?
By the twentieth, he's clearly not well, though in much less of a position to do anything about it. The trips to the kitchen stop - he's just too tired to keep going up and down the stairs. He tries to focus on his books - and he has a stack of rather morbid titles - but his focus wavers. Kierkegaard is a difficult read on a good day, but by the afternoon he can't even focus on the poetry. By this point he's disoriented and the thought to leave doesn't come quite as easily. Instead he stubbornly resolves he should write some of his own poetry, even though he can barely think straight. He doesn't have a pen or even paper, but he takes the sturdiest book he can find and starts to trace into the cover with his fingertip. It's probably for the best that he can't see his own handwriting this way - he's shivering less violently, but his hands are still shaking.]
Benevolent sun...end this eternal winter...thaw my...m-my bones...ice...
[He barely realizes he's speaking out loud, muttering under his breath. Occasionally he drifts, as he starts to lose consciousness but then he jerks awake and tries to scribble another line or two with his finger.]
12/21 | Wirt's room | Closed to Beatrice
[It takes Wirt a long time to realize he's not in the library anymore. How did he get back in his room? Who put him in his bed? Why does it feel like he has about a hundred blankets on him?
He doesn't know, but the questions are distant and hazy, except the last one. Stirring for the first time in a few hours, he irrationally tries to push some of the blankets off. They're too heavy though, so he settles for shakily peeling off his gloves and dropping them on the side of the...of the bed, right, he's in bed. He tries to push himself upright, but he's dizzy and can barely lift his head, let alone put any weight on his palms. Even laying down he feels the world rocking like a boat at sea and-- and someone calls his name.
"Wirt! Wirt! Get up, Wirt!"]
Huh...Greg?
["Come on, Wirt! Are you gonna lie around in bed all day? Come on, you said we'd go frog hunting!"
There's Greg, at the side of his bed. Wirt swears he can feel Greg tugging his hand, but he doesn't have the strength to pull away. He does have the strength to whine though, and he groans into his pillow.]
Greg, Idonwannplay.... [He's muttering and incoherent and no matter how glad he is to see Greg he definitely doesn't want to go with him. Can't he tell it's not the time for that?!]
Anytime | Other | OTA
[ooc: Want to do something other than what's here? Go for it! There's plenty of chances to catch him around.]

Okay. Okay. Calm down, Kralie. Stop being a dick. Help the poor bastard. This is an actual kid.
He sighs.
He wants to say something cool, like, "right now I'm the guy that's gonna save your life," but in the state the kid's in it's doubtful that something like that'll stick.]
Alex. [There, introductions. He's gonna keep things short and sweet.] Who's Beatrice and how do I find her? [So he can fork the freezing guy in the library onto her plate and walk away without feeling goddamn guilty about it.]
no subject
She'ssabir... [Wait, no, stop. Wirt groans softly and tries again, trying to slur less this time.] Sh-she's a bird. A-A bluebird...she can talk.
[He's too tired to fret about how completely crazy that sounds, like he normally would. It's just the most useful bit of information he can force out about her - she's the only talking bluebird in the mansion.]
no subject
You want me to get a bird. [He repeats it flatly, like that'll make it sound any less stupid. Nope, still sounds absurd. Greaaat.
A bluebird who can talk.
Magic closets. Wendigos. Freaking Wonderland. Guess anything's possible. Unfortunately.
He talks slowly, as if addressing a small child, mostly out of annoyance but also kind of out of concern that this guy is rapidly fading and if Alex doesn't speak clearly he won't even hear the whole question.]
Does she have a - phone, thing? [He fishes out his own and waves it indicatively.]
no subject
That doesn't last long though. Wirt has trouble following the phone with his eyes, and his first response is honestly just to scrunch up his nose and try to pull away. Why is this guy waving something in his face?
But oh. Right. Beatrice.]
...Y-Yeah. Yeah, she does.
no subject
You got her number or, uh, whatever?
[Hang on how do these things work. That guy Sans said there was an archive or something. Would she show up there? Does he have time to scroll through potentially thousands of entries and posts to track her down?
What is he, Jay? He shouldn't give a shit about this.
Except he's not about to watch some kid contract hypothermia out of nowhere. He's not that heartless.
He doesn't wait for an answer. He starts scanning the network for a Beatrice.]
no subject
...Oh. Yeah, uh. Mm.
[He shifts to stick one very cold hand out of his cape cocoon and starts to trace along the cover of one of his morbid books, thumb and forefinger together like he's holding a pen. There is no pen though and this isn't a notebook and even if they both were, his movements are sloppy and too hard to follow...and they go on much longer than the length of a phone number. He seems to have lost track of what he was doing mid-thought, hallucinating scribbling words down like he normally would on a trip to the library.
It is one hundred percent completely unhelpful.]
DON'T MIND ME EIGHTY YEARS LATER I AM SORRY
Oh, Wirt, what have you done now?
no subject
He's very pale, and even in the warm library he's trembling. He stirs a little when Beatrice speaks and he blinks open his eyes, though it takes him a moment to find and focus on her.]
B-Bea...Beatrice...
[It takes him a moment, as if she's far away and it takes a long time for him to hear her words and process what she's saying, and apparently he's alive enough to protest a little, even if it comes out kind of slurred.]
I-Idihin...I-I didn' doonythin...!
no subject
Is she good to take care of this guy or does Alex have to keep helping a brother out. He's probably gonna have to stick around, isn't he. It's not like a bird could personally lug this guy all the way to his room. Sigh.]
Seriously, he was just like this when I got here.
no subject
Yes, I don't think you did anything to him. Can you carry him?
[She can't. She can't do anything useful.]
going again real quick forgive me
But you know what, fine. He's not heartless. He can do things like a decent person. Fine. Alex just sounds utterly resigned to his fate when he shrugs.]
Yeah, sure.
[He's, what, a teen? Maybe? A bit thin and pencil-y but he can't be that heavy. It won't look dignified but sure, whatever. He can do this and wash his hands of it.]
Buckle up, gnome-kid. [Christ, he really is freezing. But Alex gets him in kind of an awkward bridal carry, since a fireman's lift might be a little too on-the-nose for this kind of thing.] Where to?
SORRY I'M LATE ;;;
It feels good though, better than he would ever care to admit. Alex is warm too, and so it feels like being carried around by a space heater. Where are they...oh, he just asked that. Quietly, Wirt mumbles something that's probably supposed to be an answer, but he's wholly unhelpful.
At least Beatrice knows where he lives.]
no subject
no subject
[No one had better see him actually helping this kid. It'll ruin his entire reputation as an irredeemable, irreverent asshole. Stairs are a pain in the ass, but it's not like the guy is particularly heavy. Mostly just cold.]
Any idea what's done this? You acted like this's happened before.
no subject
He vaguely catches at least one of the questions, and even though Alex probably isn't talking to him he manages to mutter something that sounds like "I don't know"...if you tried to say it without any of the consonants, that is.]
no subject
no subject
[Alex would've noticed if there were creepy girls. He just keeps following Beatrice and hoping she knows where she's going, because he has zero interest in doing this any longer than he has to.]
So I guess, yeah, some kind of sick winter thing. Don't suppose either of you have a space heater around here.

[He keeps forgetting that's a thing here, so he's trying not to sound as dumb as he feels.
It takes some creative jostling to open the door while he's got a teenage kid in hand, but hopefully Wirt is numb enough by now that it won't really matter. By the time he finally gets the door open, though, his back is definitely starting to ache.]
We there yet, or what?
no subject
[And honestly right now she doesn't care if she's wrong. She flutters over to a bed post and perches on it.]
Put him on the bed. Hurry!
no subject
Okay, so I think that's enough heavy-lifting for one day, yeah? [He steps away and rolls his shoulders.] You can take it from here, right?
['Cause he really wants to be gone.]
no subject

[Let the world never know that Alex Kralie got stuck taking orders from a bird of all things.
So he gets the shit required out of the closet, but he couldn't be pissier about it. Space heater. Blankets. Wirt is all but totally ignored at this point.]
