astrophysics mingle 1 ( open )

Who: Anyone!
Where: Fourth floor, room 052
When: 1-Jun to 31-Jul
Rating: PG-13 for language, probably
Summary: A day in the life of the physics lab. Don't be intimidated by the science because we make everything up! In fact you don't even have to science at all -- there's document scanning to do and a water cooler to chat over and equipment to fight for! If you do want some science ideas I have a collection of equipment you can break or fix or learn about, along with a loose list of projects mentioned to Jane ICly in her time here so far. This post is a MINGLE, so feel free to make open top threads (they count toward your post requirement for AC!) and have fun! If you responded here, you probably have an idea about what your character does - if you didn't respond or still aren't sure what to do, feel free to hit me up via PM or plurk @printed. I'm happy to plot/brainstorm with you!
The Story:

Rules of the Physics Lab:

Put it back where you found it, better than you found it.
If you're not sure, ask!
If someone asks, help!
NO HITTING PEOPLE WITH ROLLED UP NEWSPAPERS!

Projects currently in process:

Expansion into two additional rooms for a supercomputer
Scanning & photographing library documents for archive
Data mining & processing
Energy scanning & analysation
Scientific study of magicks of various worlds
Construction of various astrophysics and astronomy equipment

a. the middle of the night

[Alphys would absolutely say she does her best work between the hours of 12-4 in the morning; it's when she's the least intrusive and also when she tends to stop poking around her personal lab quarters, because she's worried about waking people up. So she tiptoes around, working towards constructing the things people have asked her to run the engineering numbers on before slipping away again before other people might show up for the morning.]

b. magic magic magic

[She'd be the last person to say she's any kind of expert when it comes to actually doing magic, but when it comes to studying it, it's basically her unofficial degree. Since she's the first from her world here, she starts trying to catalog the different types, and... well, if you asked her, she'd say she has no clue, but the papers on the table are absolutely on fire.]

I'm s-sorry! I'm sorry this w-wasn't supposed to happen, uhm, is there-- can someone do s-something, I'm so sorry--

c. wildcard

[hit her up with a prompt! Alphys is primarily an engineer and programmer so she'll be building equipment, fixing things, and tending to make a mess no matter how hard she tries.]

[Alphys wishes she was better at magic in general, but messing up in public is something that will never stop being mortifying. People watching, having to cover her mistakes... it's horrible. But she skitters back, tries to cut through the fog of her panic to listen to Jane's advise, and takes the extinguisher with semi-shaky hands, hitting it at full blast right at the flames. It's... overkill, but it does the job, and Alphys manages a half smile, looking up at Jane.]

S-Sorry, I'm so sorry, that w-was an accident, oh gosh... I, uh, t-that doesn't usually happen.

[She blushes, sheepish. Jane is being much too nice to her.]

W-Well, sort of? I mean, I don't d-do fire magic, really, I'm better at electricity, but s-some of the sparks must have crossed. It's, uh, c-complicated. Again, I'm sorry, I'm n-not very good at magic, really, I can catalog it o-okay but I'm really, uh, not that good at doing it...

M-Maybe? I'm not usually, uhm, I mean I d-don't have very strong magic, usually when uhm, s-something like this happens it's an electrical fire from p-parts grinding together or some wires g-getting exposed.

[How often does she almost blow herself up????? More than you think. More than she wants to admit.]

Sorry, I, uh, didn't mean to c-cause such a panic.

[She smiles, a little more genuine than before. She's not used to hanging around people who understand that things go... objectively wrong, in experiments, more than you can feasibly explain. Then again, there aren't a lot of monsters even climbing over each other to be engineers and scientists. It's not like they're constantly building, after all. They're working in a pretty finite amount of space.]

T-Thank you.

[A small pause.] ... I have n-no idea how to use this.

[She blushes out of embarrassment when Jane laughs, but she tries to be attentive and watch what Jane is doing as she activates the machine. Everything is done with magic in the Underground, so the technology is just... so different than what's up here. Sometimes she has to learn even things that seem silly. But she takes the tube and smiles, trying not to look too mortified as she turns it on and starts cleaning up the foam herself. She grins a bit more when it becomes apparent she's not immediately failing, and yells over the noise of the vacuum.]

T-This isn't, uh, so hard, actually!
