[Jane Doe is called such out of irony, really. She makes people forget, makes them the Janes and John Does of the world who know nothing of what happened to them, the secrets they've heard, the things they've done.
At least, that's how she's been told she should act. Eliminate human memories, take away everything until they're weak husks with no way to function on their own. Every now and then, to keep up appearances, she has to, she has no choice. But she hates it, she hates it every time, especially when there's an audience. She's supposed to feel superior, and instead, she feels like some twisted executioner, every time. And then, she went and fell in love with a human, making her life full of color against the dark shadows whenever they're together. They have to be careful, so careful. If they're ever caught together by anyone other than a human sympathizer, they'll both be killed.
During her days, she keeps to her own kind, the ones who bask in being a mutant, but at night, she finds the human sympathizers for a few hours before it's so late, she can sneak off to find Kurt without being noticed At least, she hopes.]
end of second day/beginning of t h i r d d a y - closed to Kurt Weller
[Jane remembers something tiny at first, something about...FBI. Something about a place called Wonderland. At first it's wisps of fragments of memories, and after being reunited with Kurt where he lives in Genosha, she tries to tell him, asks if he knows, if he remembers something that isn't supposed to be. She remembers a place not here, a dress, dancing with him, stolen kisses. But then she remembers a place that's even different from that; mirrors that mocked them somehow, a homecoming together on the floor of a gym.
She tries to tell him what she knows as they hold onto each other, clinging to every moment they have because one day, eventually, their meetings will become less as people get more violent. So, she shifts focus at times to simply kiss him, be with him, revel in his touch while she can.]

Thank you.
[The rubbing does feel good, it helps. After about an hour though, she pushes herself up in bed a little, then stands because she simply needs to get up, back aching. And then she helps herself to his wet bar, grabbing a bottle of scotch and not bothering with glasses before crawling back into bed. This probably isn't healthy, but she can't think to want anything else right now.]

But she doesn't love Alex.]
Alex. It was Alex.

Okay.

I'm sorry. I'm sorry, I don't...know what to do. What do you do when you die?
[She knows he can't answer that question for her. She knows she's making him feel more helpless with every day that passes. But she doesn't know what to do to help them both.]

It's late at night, too late to really do anything, but Kurt puts the bottle aside and pulls her close. ]
Tomorrow you're gonna get out of bed. We both are. Because laying here isn't helping anything.

You're coming with me? You won't leave me.
[It's a statement at the end. She knows he won't leave her.]

[ He cradles her face between his hands, kissing her forehead tenderly. ]
But you need to rest. [ She hasn't been sleeping much and when she does, she doesn't sleep well, so she needs to sleep when she can. ]

You're not sleeping either.
[She only says it after she's calm and feels safe again.]

I'm fine.

[It'll be physically impossible for him to stay awake without it being damaging.]
Please.
[It's still the middle of the night, and she cradles his cheek.]
Tomorrow night, we'll get something out of the closet to help us sleep. Okay?
no subject
[ He doesn't know how well anything from the closet will really work, but he worries that it could knock him out cold and leave her vulnerable. Everyone's body reacts differently. If she wakes in the middle of the night terrified, he can't help her. ]

[The truth is, she's always going to need him. But he can't refuse sleep forever. It's not physically possible.]
no subject
Try and get back to sleep. I'm right here, I've got you.
[ He pulls the blankets around her, completely enveloping her. ]

Jane does manage to sleep another four hours, and this time when she wakes up there's no flailing or screaming. Just a soft gasp as she jerks and opens her eyes.]

I'm here.

[The gratitude, love, and relief in her voice, is there, without a doubt. Her head lays against his shoulder and she takes a deep breath, letting it out slowly.]
Take a shower with me?
[Through all of this, something she's realized she enjoys is the feel of the water washing over them, his arms around her, and the way their skin feels when its slick. There's nothing sexy about it, not right now, it's a tacit acknowledgment though when they're together, that it's good, and she can enjoy it.]

[ He gently helps her out of bed, gets them both undressed and into the shower. Like he did before, he washes her hair and skin for her, then wraps his arms around her, pressing soft kisses to her shoulder and the back of her head. He marvels at the fact that she can be alive like this, when she had been dead and gone, completely lifeless in his arms. He can't help the sudden surge of that horrible memory to the forefront of his mind, and he feels like he might be sick or pass out, or both. Closing his eyes tightly, he just takes deep breaths and tightens his hold on her. When he trusts himself to speak again, he clears his throat and speaks softly. ]
We should go walk on the beach. Get some fresh air.

When he speaks, she tenses just a little, unsure. Her mind races with every possibility; would she be hurt again? Would someone attack her? Her heart begins beating faster at the thought of leaving this safe space, and her hands hold onto one of his arms tightly.]
I don't...I don't know what'll happen out there.

[ He knows the promise is a hollow one since he had failed to protect her already. What good is he now? ]
