Who: Bruce Banner & YOU
Where: All around the mansion and the grounds
When: During the second half of August
Rating: PG13 for likely mentions of trauma and violence, will update if need be
Summary: Bruce slowly tries to cope with Wonderland, Ultron, Sokovia, and the mutant event. It doesn't always work well.
The Story:
[ Coping is a pretty word. But like a lot of complicated words, it's pretty on paper, with a clean cut description added at the front like a dictionary, explained just right. Here, this means that in the English language, and that's how it all works.
But it's not. Adapting words to reality makes it obvious just how some things can't be described with precision, how fallible language can be. Bruce finds himself at a loss as of late, lost between what he feels and what he thinks, what to do or say in face of the experiences he needs to work through.
By comparison, the mutant event really shouldn't have affected him that much. But then it does, because he was so put-together then, he had principles, a purpose, something he genuinely believed in and was willing to fight for. Now? Now he's back to normal. His normal, messed-up and lost self. Well— slightly better now, but does it make much of a difference? He's still completely out of sorts, and he doesn't mean just in Wonderland. He means in life overall. Like he doesn't entirely belong there, or anywhere.
He tries hard to cope, though. Just a pretty word, but he does. Mostly this means burying himself neck deep into science, work, whatever he can study in this place. When even that gets too frustrating and leads nowhere, he heads out for a walk around the mansion, tries to eat something— loses his appetite after a couple of bites but forces himself to finish anyway. Can't have him getting so hungry he'll lose his handle on himself.
The gardens are pretty but it all seems a little hollow to him, still he'll make his way there, sometimes walking one of the stray dogs currently being looked after by Sam and those who'd shown interest in helping. The beach is, by far, one of his favorite places, considering it's usually more deserted, and he finds himself the quietest and farthest spot to sit by himself, eyes fixed on the horizon.
In the meantime, he keeps an eye for familiar faces. People he knew during the mutant event, people he felt like he'd shaped a bond with. Some of them he does want to get to meet here, and the ones he'd had less than pleasant encounters with he also hopes to find. Even if there's one in particular he's keen on avoiding, but that's something to worry about later. Way later. ]

She wonders if she would have, if she'd had time. After SHIELD had fallen, she'd been distracted. Yes, she'd wanted to make sure Steve was safe - she had promised Fury - but he'd had Natasha to do that, had the rest of the Avengers, and she'd had to rebuild her life.
Which, she supposes, is something Banner's had to do, too. She hadn't thought of it like that before. But his life had been turned upside down by the Hulk. She can't even imagine what it must be like, to know you're a monster and not always have control. Part of her respects him a little more for trying to control it as much as he does - for being able to control it as much as he does. ]
Hopefully they'll work things out while they're here. I don't know how things are going to end up back home, but at least they don't have so much reason to fight here. [ And she'll do what she can to talk them around. She likes them both, damn it. She's not going to stand by and watch them fight.
She nods toward the path. ]
Ready to really run?

It'd also have been much easier to handle if the Hulk hadn't made him seemingly invulnerable, but no point thinking about that now. He's effectively deleted that out of his list of options the moment he realized it would never work.
Wonderland is just the most recent of many, and honestly? It's going a lot better than he'd expected at first. Granted, it's not all shiny and hopeful as when the Avengers started off, but given his recent experiences, it could be a lot worse. It could be a lot better too, but that's a whole other matter entirely. ]
I don't think Steve's interested in fighting. [ He doesn't know where Tony stands on that matter, and he's been kind of avoiding him since Steve told him everything that happened, but he does know that Tony tends to be a lot more reckless and a lot less prone to letting things go. So really, things could go either way— but whatever happens, Bruce is definitely staying out of it.
Instead of answering her question, he just tips his head in a nod, then starts off on a slow run, calmly picking up pace rather than jumping straight into a fast rhythm. ]

[ But then, Banner continues to pick up speed, and she grins to herself. She forgoes speaking in order to run faster. She isn't accustomed to running with other people anymore; back when she'd trained for SHIELD, then the CIA, she had run with other recruits. In Wonderland, she's been mostly on her own. Then again, after SHIELD fell, she hadn't been particularly interested in making friends. Now, she's more at peace, and it occurs to her how odd it is to go running - not just with a person, but with a civilian.
Ha. Dr. Banner, just a regular civilian.
Just like Steve is a regular fugitive.
Her features darken as she considers the situation she left back home. It helps fill out some of the things Steve had told her, helps with some of the holes. He had never mentioned Aunt Peggy, or the bit when she'd given him and Sam his gear. He and Sam are fugitives, Bucky in cryo... She isn't sure about Tony, which is a little maddening. Not that they're close, but their families shared a bond. That mattered to her, particularly in Peggy's absence.
And she wonders if Bruce might be in a similar position. No family, but people who are as close as he might get...
Her brain is really working overtime in trying to find common ground with a guy who could squash her like a bug.
She mentally huffs at herself and puts on a little more speed. ]

She could easily outrun him, he knows that. Luckily they're not racing, but jogging together, so she should have no need to do that. ]
We might not even have the time.
[ Not that Bruce would fight either way— that was one of the reasons why he'd left too, and it stays true to this day. Even when all he wants to do is help, it still has a way of turning around and ending up in chaos sometimes, so he'd rather not risk it.
Once she speeds up, he picks up pace too, a little more warmed up now that they've been running for a few minutes. ]

If she were more immature, she would admit that she absolutely hates that they're fighting. Sure, Steve and Tony have had their disagreements - they're both stubborn men from different backgrounds. But they've always managed to work together in the end, bound by their desire to protect people.
They still have that motivation here, but they also have a massive amount of damage. She likes to think that they'll overcome their... difficulties when they're needed. But whether they can overcome their differences successfully, and in a way that will do more to help people than get them hurt... She can only hope.
She presses her lips together and keeps running. She can only control herself, she thinks. She can push Steve and Tony together, but she can't force them to work out their shit. ]

The problem here is that the situation's far more complicated than just a minor disagreement. Hell, even Bruce is pissed at Tony and he wasn't even a part of that whole mess. But if anything, that only makes him want to stay out of that mess even more.
They turn towards the woods and run along the edge, Bruce's focus mainly on his breathing, which is kept very much under control all the way down to the beach. It's only once they're there that he speaks up, feeling some strain in his heart at this point. ]
I need a break.
[ He's not asking; in his case, it's a matter of safety. ]

She takes a couple minutes to get her breath calmed down. ]
You okay?

He looks at Sharon at the question, looking mildly amused at the distance she keeps. ]
I don't lose control that easily, you know. [ Not that he can blame her for being careful, but still. ] I'm fine. I just needed to stop for a little while.

[ She keeps walking, pacing nearby. A couple of hairs stick to the sweat on her neck. ] It isn't a workout if it doesn't make you work.
[ Sharon actually grins as a thought occurs to her. ] One good thing about you not going back home? There was this horrible song on the radio. A real earworm. The only bit I could ever remember was "Gotta go to work, work, work, work, work, work, work. Yeah I gotta go to work, work, work, work, work, work, work." [ She mock-shudders. ] Enjoy your innocence while you can.

When you put it like that, I insist on the distance. [ He delivers it a little as a joke, letting the matter drop rather than circling back around to the same topic. ]
Oh, my God. [ He breathes out with a chuckle, closer to a laugh, running fingers through the damp curls sticking to his forehead. ] I'm getting tired from just hearing you sing it. But somehow I doubt it's as bad as that stupid Soupy George song.

She frowns at him when he talks about the song, trying to place it. She only knew the Rihanna song because it almost always seemed to play on the radio when she was traveling for work. Had she missed an earworm song?
And dare she try to get Banner to sing it? ] I know I might regret this, but... which one is that?
no subject
[ Probably longer than that. And he has a feeling it'll get stuck there again if he so much as tries to hum the rhythm. But at least he can talk about the lyrics, right? Not like there were that many words to it anyway. ]
It was something about a cat named George who had a can soup on his head. That... that was pretty much the whole song.
