[Punctuality in planning is important: the ballroom itself will only be ready for guests at exactly 8 o'clock, bedecked in glittering golds and the red-green of Christmas' vestiges, still clinging to the old year. Dining tables surround a central dance floor, bars and buffets dot the edges of the room and both holly and mistletoe are expressed liberally through the interior.

Mingle, dance, eat and be merry! The New Year will come in at midnight - the band will play and the drinks will flow for long after.]

[ Thankfully (maybe?) for him, he's used to "weird confusing shit" so he likely won't really have a sense of how bad it is until he actually witnesses one of these "events".

In the meantime, he supposes, he'll just be killing time. ]

A few months. It's a long time for me, but nowhere near as long as some other people have been here. There's guys that've been here for years.

[Which isn't something she really likes to think about.]

Really hoping I'm not here that long.

[Even considering what's going to happen back home, she knows she has to get back to it someday.]

[ He doesn't necessarily care for the idea of being stuck here (or anywhere), either, but it's entirely possible that Wonderland is simply a more colorful prison than the one he left -- in which case, he might not be able to complain about it too much.

It's not like he's missing anything worthwhile, being here. He might as well make the best of it. ]

At the moment, I can't say I have a preference. Perhaps I will when I've been here longer.

[ He quirks a brow. ]

You have something to go back to?

Yeah, my friends are waiting for me.

[She doesn't say much beyond that. It's not something she really talks about with most people. Not because it's none of their business, but because having to stop some priest from doing...some sort of incomprehensible thing that's really bad and probably world threatening isn't really a topic she knows how to approach. The easiest way would be to say she's trying to stop someone from reaching Heaven, but really, that just makes her sound like a terrible person, so yeah, not phrasing it that way.]

[ It seems a fairly typical answer, and he doesn't really have much reason to question it, besides. Friends are a good thing to have, and if she has some waiting for her (among other things), that can only be a positive.

If there's more to it than she's saying, well- he wouldn't tell a stranger he didn't know everything about himself, either.

Archer shrugs. ]

One limbo may very well be the same as another so I have no reason to rush back to the one I left.

[ He gestures at their surroundings. ]

[That throws her off. She's never heard anyone describe where they were before like that. So yeah, pretty confused over here.]

I was in a place displaced from time and the world at large.

Wonderland may not have the same landscape, but the principle is similar.

[ He was trapped there, and he is trapped here. There were disasters to be cleaned up there, and here, apparently, there is a similar cycle.

The reasons may be difference, but a cage is a cage, in his view. It's all the same. ]

It's why I have no preference, being here or being there.

This is kind of my first uh...I guess grown up New Year's Party? I'd say adult, but I so don't want people to take that the wrong way. So I don't really know what people talk about these things. Especially here since you can't really bring up work or where you went on vacation or any of that stuff.

Generally, I'd say adults schmooze and drink booze.

It's been some time since I attended one of these.

[He's got the whole...cool adult look and tone down if you ask her. Not that she really knows what that's like anyway, she doesn't know very many cool people in general.]

But I'm guessing wherever you were wasn't really the party type. And you know...I get the whole getting trashed thing, but it's not really my thing. Plus, I'm pretty sure my mom would find a way to show up here and kill me if she found out. And she'd find out. Somehow.

[There's no keeping secrets from her if you ask Jolyne. Then again, Jolyne's not good at keeping secrets to begin with, so that might have something to do with it.

And of course, all this is joking around, so she's just laughing. It's funny, it lightens the mood a little. Or at least she hopes so.]

He has perfected, however, the art of appearing to not give a shit. Archer scoffs quietly. ]

I generally avoid intoxication.

[ Aside from the fact that it would likely be difficult for him to get drunk, he really isn't a big fan of it. He prefers to be in control of his faculties, and "cutting loose" and having fun, so to speak, honestly isn't his thing. He's here, he's participating, but mostly as a meet-and-greet sort of event.

He can't help but tease just a little bit, though. ]
