[Punctuality in planning is important: the ballroom itself will only be ready for guests at exactly 8 o'clock, bedecked in glittering golds and the red-green of Christmas' vestiges, still clinging to the old year. Dining tables surround a central dance floor, bars and buffets dot the edges of the room and both holly and mistletoe are expressed liberally through the interior.

Mingle, dance, eat and be merry! The New Year will come in at midnight - the band will play and the drinks will flow for long after.

Georgia's lip twitches slightly, almost into a smile. "Spoken like someone who hasn't talked to many politicians."

She shrugs her shoulders, her smile a little self-deprecating now. "You got me. But then, I've never really talked to much of anyone, at least not until I came here."
choosetruth: (yeah nitwit that ain’t news no more!)

Georgia's always talked to far too many people than she'd really want to interact with if she could avoid it. A professional hazard. Still, it's an interesting statement, considering Elizabeth certainly doesn't seem like a shut-in.

"Why do I get the feeling that wasn't for lack of trying?"

"I spent most of my life locked in a tower," she explains, a slightly bitter note to her voice. "Being in Wonderland is the most people I've been around since ... well, ever."

"A lot of people in my world would probably envy you."

Georgia can certainly be a hermit under the right circumstance, but she still wouldn't want to be literally locked in a tower. She might grouse when Shaun gets her to go out in the field with him, but she'd never want to lose the option. A good Newsie can't get that cut off from the world. It would mean losing her perspective.

"Though that assumes the presence of a solid wifi connection, which around here, I guess you can't. Does your tower have wifi?"

"I'm not quite sure what that is," she admits a little sheepishly. She'd mostly gotten used to the sheer amount of things that she'd not experienced that were commonplace to most of the other Wonderland residents, both because of her time period and her isolation, but 'wifi' just sounded like random syllables to her, with no contextual clues to give her a hint.
choosetruth: (it's the same either way)

Georgia wishes that surprised her, but maybe she's been in Wonderland too long. "Um, internet. Like... the network here." She tugs her phone out of her pocket and holds it up. "It's a little more complicated than that, but at it's most basic form, it's the same idea."

Elizabeth takes her network device out of her pocket, turning it over in her hands. "I'd always thought these ran on whatever magic powers Wonderland. It's fascinating to think that other worlds have them too."

Magic. Still not Georgia's favorite concept. She presses her lips together. "No, actually. It's not magical at all." Though here, perhaps, it is. Georgia chooses not to consider that possibility more than she has to. For the sake of her sanity, she's going to assume the more logical answer is the right one. "I didn't believe in magic before I came here, but I've always had a phone."

"There are telephones where I come from too, but ... you just phone people on them." None of this 'wifi' stuff, though Elizabeth can see it coming in the future now she knows it exists.

"Well, we can still do that." Georgia gives a faint smile. "But people are more likely to use video or text."

"That sounds very convenient. I've rather liked being able to see the moving pictures of people as I talk to them." She isn't aware how dated her terminology makes her sound, just very enthusiastic at the thought of it.
choosetruth: (the kind that turns a lady's head)

Wow, she sure is from before video was a thing. Georgia's polite enough not to make too much of a thing out of it. "You get a lot of subtleties you lose in plain text or with just voice."

Elizabeth nods in agreement. "It's easy to lose that in even the most detailed letters." Not that she ever had anyone to send them to herself.
