[Punctuality in planning is important: the ballroom itself will only be ready for guests at exactly 8 o'clock, bedecked in glittering golds and the red-green of Christmas' vestiges, still clinging to the old year. Dining tables surround a central dance floor, bars and buffets dot the edges of the room and both holly and mistletoe are expressed liberally through the interior.

Mingle, dance, eat and be merry! The New Year will come in at midnight - the band will play and the drinks will flow for long after.

You flatterer. [She can't quite hide how pleased she looks, though. She's not used to compliments.]

Yes, I think I would. But then I suppose if you hear it all the time it doesn't mean so much.

[Guilty as charged. He takes the mock reprimand with a wholly unapologetic smile.]

It's still true. Everyone here looks out of time to my eyes. We have different ideas of fashion and entertainment back where I'm from.

[That smile of his pulls wider.]

I could stand to hear it a few times more!

[Her eyes flash with interest.] How is the entertainment different?

[She laughs gently.] Now, now. I wouldn't want you to get too big a head. But for what it's worth, I mean it sincerely.

There are no hounds licking mutton off the floor, for one. I suppose seeing who stepped in dog doo-doo first at any kind of big gathering was part of the entertainment. [Okay, so maybe he's exaggerating. A little. It's like 30% true--there are dogs, and they do throw scraps on the floor for them, and the dogs do shit. Just maybe not at a gathering this formal.] And we have minstrels who sing about the news of the day instead of the pre-set music that comes out of those metallic boxes. I have yet to hear a single ballad about the White Queen turning us all into her loyal minions, which is probably something to be thankful for, actually.

[Depositing his empty plate on the table next to him, he reaches for his drink glass, settling his weight on one leg in casual repose. He'd parked himself in a position that gives him a nice view of the room; he's in no particular hurry to shuffle off.

Eyebrows lift--a big head, me? Don't be silly!--and then settle again.]

Then sincerely, I thank you. I'm trying for a more Earth-y look.

[A dress shirt instead of dress robes isn't trying that hard, in all honesty, but he'd thought it'd be nice to blend a little more than usual tonight.]

I've seen drawings of castles with minstrels' galleries, playing the lute and singing Greensleeves. It must be really something to see! [Her enthusiasm fades a little as she realises it isn't really that special for him.] I guess it must be one of those things that doesn't seem quite so amazing when you're used to it, though.
