- [ Despite her appearance with Richie at the New Years Eve Ball, Kate's presence in the Mansion is not easily noticed as January rolls around. She keeps to her room on the tenth floor, getting out only when the walls feel like their closing in on her. If encountered during the day, you can be fairly certain that Kate will be alone but as the sun goes down, there's every chance you'll find any conversation you might have with her, interrupted by a tall man with glasses who if you think is sizing you up, undoubtedly is. ]

- [ The house of God had once been a place where Kate felt welcomed with open arms, a sanctuary that wrapped her in peace and warmth in a way that even her home could not. It was one of the few places where she had the certainty of belonging that so few ever found in life and she'd thought it would always be that for her, no matter where her life took her. Now? She wasn't so sure.
It had been many months since Kate had stepped foot in a Chapel and though Richie had shown her the one here in Wonderland as a way of putting her at ease, she already wondered if it existed to torment her more than comfort her. Kate had never wavered in her beliefs, despite all she'd seen and experienced this last year. She'd held firm to the knowledge that God loved her because as far as she was concerned, God was love but having time to stop and think about every choice she'd made, Kate could feel the weight of every one of those decisions whenever she stepped foot inside the chapel.
While she doesn't spend hours on end here, Kate can still be found in the Chapel at various times throughout the day, usually when there doesn't appear to be anyone else around. Always tucked into one of the pews at the back, as if she weren't sure she should really be here at all. ]

- [ While some people took to the magic of Wonderland; the ease and comfort it afforded those who lived here, Kate found it difficult to trust anything that could be achieved without effort. She'd tried eating in the dining room where most people took their meals but these attempts usually ended with her being more hungry than satisfied and she always ended up retreating to the kitchen where she could fix her own meal.
She was hardly what you'd call a gourmet cook, but Kate had always helped her mother in the kitchen and she'd in many ways taken on the role of caretaker in the time since her mother's death. It wasn't like her father had been in a state to do so and Scott? It was a miracle if Kate could get him to set the table.
Used to cooking for two or more, Kate will be prone to making too much and never one to see food go to waste, anyone who happens into the kitchen while she's here will be offered some of whatever she's making. Those who happen to frequent the kitchen might even realize that she's the one responsible for the plates of food that have handwritten notes beneath them, inviting anyone to take it for themselves. ]

- [ When you spend your whole life in the small town of Bethel, Texas, a place that despite the bitter cold that came during Winter, had never seen an inch of snow in the time Kate had lived there, the Winter Wonderland that existed beyond the Mansion walls had its own kind of appeal.
Some days, Kate would be content to sit by a window, a cup of hot chocolate warming her hands as she watched the flurries of snow, dance through the air. On days when the weather was mild enough to dare venture out, however, Kate would don multiple layers of clothing and would brave the biting cold just to experience what for her, was more magical than anything she'd seen inside the mansion.]

- [ Set something up yourself! Kate will explore the various parts of the Mansion so it won't be inconceivable that you'd come across her almost anywhere. She will also be curious about the mirror side of Wonderland so Mirrors! are more than welcome to tag her as well. Alternatively, if you want to hash an idea out with me, you're welcome to PM her journal or hit me up on plurk:

[On this point, though, she won't be such a pushover.]
You really think that's such a good idea? [Eyebrows raising.] I mean, what if he's not wrong? What if he knows somethin' that we don't?
no subject
But we won't know if he's lying, either. It's pointless.
[He glances back out, wondering if he can hear them talking about all this.]
You said it yourself. He's just trying to scare you. Or he's trying to see what else you'll tell him in return.
no subject
I listen to you.
Just, not always it seems.]
I didn't tell him anything. [Not that he was even accusing her but the defensive edge to her voice has little to do with that.]
no subject
He also knows that if his mirror spoke to him, he wouldn't be able to just ignore it, either.
Richie's eyes linger on hers for a moment before he finally says:]
Just be careful. Because that- [He points at the mess.] -is probably exactly what he wanted.
no subject
Tension melting away, she nods her head and exhales another sigh.]
I know. [Kate now moving to climb from the bed so she can join him in the cleanup.] Believe me, I know. [Still mad at herself.] He just... really pissed me off.
you know, the whole thing is... creepy. [And then for emphasis.] I'd just had a shower.
no subject
He's just gonna not comment on that, though. He's done some pretty creepy shit, okay? It should shock him that his mirror would do that but it...doesn't really.]
For what I understand, the mirror is just gonna fix itself. We can find a way to keep it covered when we want it that way. Drapes or some shit like that.
no subject
But in all her oblivious glory, she's just going to walk with him out of her bedroom and move towards a cupboard to get a dustpan and broom.]
Oh, I know. [She'd even known that part when she smashed the mirror.] It was still satisfying.
[But she nods her agreement on the drapes and dear god Richie, please teach Kate that she doesn't have to manually clean like this when you live in a magical mansion.]
no subject
[Black eyes heal. Doesn't mean he doesn't like knocking someone on their ass when the situation calls for it.
And I mean, of course he's gonna do that. He actually stops and blinks at her for a moment before he holds up a finger.]
Just...wait a second.
[Excuse him while he moves over to the same cupboard, opens it up, and pulls out a hand vac, holding it up like 'um duh?']
no subject
They do the same thing! [Close to indignant, though more playful.
The fact is, that despite being in a place where anything she might need is at her fingertips, she was still clinging to what was familiar to her.]
You really don't mind how easy this place makes it, to have whatever you want, do you? [It's not a judgment as such, more a sincere curiosity to understand how she can struggle with everything and he slides right in like he was meant for all this.]
no subject
[Which when you live with a hungry snakepire should be something on your mind. Just saying. It's just as much for his comfort as it is for hers.
He raises a brow at her.]
Of course not. Why would it?
[No really, explain it to him. He's confused.]
no subject
I don't know... because... there's no satisfaction in it? Everything is just, laid out for us on a silver platter. We don't have to do anything but exist and wait for things to go bad again at the next event.
no subject
[He doesn't turn the hand vac on just yet, because it's...probably going to be loud and he doesn't want to talk over it.]
This place kidnapped us. It's holding us prisoner. And as long as that's the way things are? I'm gonna take every little thing I can out of it. It owes me that much.
[And then he turns the machine on with a flick of his thumb, obviously timed, and then kneels down to start sucking up the broken glass.]
no subject
She supposes that maybe, she could try embracing that idea a little more but there were some things that wouldn't be the same if she pulled them from the cupboards as opposed to doing it herself. She and Richie could probably enjoy a twelve-course meal, but wouldn't it mean more if she made it herself?]
Can we go on a date? [The question coming seemingly out of nowhere, as soon as he's done wth the mini vac.] Or... I mean, do we do that?
no subject
He might be fucked.]I don't know. Do we?
[He rubs the back of his neck. This is the guy who's probably never been on a date in his life. Or maybe just the one where he got laid for the first time with that girl Seth probably hooked him up with just so he didn't end up a twenty-year-old virgin.
It's fine. Their relationship is weird.]
What would a date be like to you?
no subject
Other times... they kind of acted like roommates. ]
I don't know? [Because she's a teenage girl, Richie. If she has to tell you what a date would be like, then it's not all that special because she knows you well enough to realize that you'll find a way to give her exactly what she says and that's not... what she was wanting here.]
Just, something... special I guess. Different, I don't know. [Yes Kate, you said that already.] Not that there's anything wrong with what we do do I just...
[And now she's reached the uncomfortable babbling part of the conversation and she would just like to stop now, please thank you.]
I don't know, it's silly, it doesn't matter.
no subject
Oh, this is like the dance thing.
[Someone had to ask her, not wait until they knew she wanted to. Which meant if she told him what she wanted to do, it kind of missed the whole point.
.....This is also literally like what he tried to do before. Surprise Santanico with something seemingly out of nowhere, only she'd turned around and given it back to him.
This was fucking confusing.]
No, it's fine. It's not silly. We can...do that. Totally.
no subject
Yes Richie. This is exactly like the "dance thing".
Kate watches as his silent thoughts play out across his face, her eyebrows seeming to dance with every flicker of emotion, raising then relaxing once he finally speaks.]
Okay. [Practically beathing a sigh of relief.] I don't mean now or anything. [Those words slamming together in her rush to get them out.
She still has memories of the dance, okay.] Just. I don't know. Sometime, maybe. [A beat.] If you want. I don't want you doing stuff just to make me happy.
[See?! Exactly like the dance!]
no subject
[He doesn't ever quite understand that either, considering making her happy in turn makes him happy. Why the hell wouldn't he want to do that when it was simple for him to do so? Not to mention he's made it pretty clear he likes spending time with her.
He'll figure it out. Time to hit the books. Maybe ask around if he gets super desperate.]
I'm gonna go figure out how to put a drape on the mirrors now.
no subject
Meanwhile it's Kate asking herself exactly that as he suddenly decides that now is the time to figure out the drape mirror problem.
Sure.
Okay.
You do you Richie.]
Right. [As she shifts awkwardly, her hands moving from her hair to her hips then finally motion towards her room.] I'm going to... read or, you know.
[Not stand here awkwardly, basically.]
no subject
[A beat.]
Did you want to do anything later? [Another beat.] Unrelated to the other thing we just talked about.
[Are they giving up the other stuff while he figures this shit out?]
no subject
Yeah. [A smile finally touching her lips as she makes the choice to push their mutual uncertainty away.] Movie night, or?
no subject
[He probably hasn't offered that yet. Shhh.]
no subject
Really?! [Look at you trying to win all the points, Richie.] Guess I better make sure its a good one. It might be a while before it happens again.
no subject
[Look at him all full of himself now.]
no subject
[Two can play this game, Richie Gecko.]
