Summary: Napstablook struggles with resets and swimming
The Story


I Don’t know where to go,
Ghosts don’t swim well. As their body becomes more opaque they float up to the ceiling, sometimes getting stuck in a lighting fixture. When they fade, they sink to the middle but can’t seem to move forward- or at all, really, just down. So they bob up and down, slowly making their way through the water, like a very clumsy jellyfish, apologizing when they bump into people and/or furniture.

II Don’t know where I am, (during/post flood)
This is the fourteenth time Napstablook has phased through the wall of your room and apologized.

“oh … oh gee i didn’t realize this was occupied, sorry…. I didn’t mean too um... i’ll… i’ll…..”

They stare at you, blinking. This is the first time they’ve gotten this far.

“oh. oh good…. I think it stopped….. sorry about that”

III Just run around, run around and think why

"oh uh... not really... i'm kind of bored to be honest....."

The ghost floats over to him, inquisitively.

"pleased to meet you.... you're a human right? do you need to breathe?"

“As good of a reason as any.”

Considering how weird this event is, boredom is the least of Stefan's problems, but he supposes a ghost wouldn't need to breathe. Or well, struggle against the rising tides.

“I'm a special kind of human,” he says, carefully thinking through each word. His immortality isn't his secret alone, and casually confessing wouldn't help him or his brother. “I mean, I have powers, but the breathing thing's important.”

"oh uh well, it's important for most things- even monsters, haha..."

They blink.

"there are other kinds of humans?"

omg no, don't even worry about it♥

"Kind of." Stefan tilts his head a little. "Sometimes, humans have superpowers, and that makes them different from those who don't."

(Or, if he were honest, he'd say he's not human at all.)

"We're all human at the end of the day, just with uh - more than surface-level things to set us apart."

"Something like that." Stefan laughs, trying to muffle the sound with his hand. "I'd show it, but I'm more worried about me surviving this flood."

"that's fair... what kind of powers do you have?

... can you fly?"

[stefanged]

“I wish!” He laughs again, briefly ducking his head in an attempt to hide his expression. (It's a failed effort.) “No, um – think more super-speed or super-strength.”

They nod a little. "plus, you've got the power to reset, being a human... so you're supersuper...."

omg no, they're super precious !!

"Thanks, I think." All of this praise is gonna make Stefan so, so red by the end. He can already tell. "What do you mean by 'reset', though?"

"humans can.... "

They pause, not entirely sure how to explain it. They've just always accepted that humans were able to reset, and they've never questioned or examined it further.

"the... timeline. You can go....back in the timeline and start again....to a SAVE at least..."

They pause. How different could other humans be?

"...right?"

"Humans from your world, maybe."

Stefan presses his lips together, unwilling to outright negate what they say. After all, time travel seems infinitely useful, and if Donovan were capable of it, he would've heard of it years ago. Hopefully.

"Where I'm from, we're not usually capable of starting over. Or changing a timeline. Or, honestly, any of that stuff."

It had never really occurred to them that resets weren't a part of all humans.

“huh, yeah, it must just be my world. sorry…..”

"It's okay." Stefan shakes his head. "It's not like you knew, right? There's a lot of us out there, and I doubt many of us come from the same world."

Let alone the same Earth, especially if this one's mentioning resetting timelines and potentially parallel universes.

“do you have monsters in your world?” They ask, curious.

“and are they mean ones or normal ones?”

"Well, what do you mean by monsters?" Stefan suspects he knows, but he'll elaborate anyway, "We have vampires and werewolves and witches, and they're like people. You have good and bad and plenty in-between."
