( elena nods into her pillow, lips brushing across damon's knuckles again at the motion. it's only human to feel fear. klaus' mirror has been stalking caroline. her own mirror ripped damon's heart out of his chest. she is extremely aware of how dangerous they can be, and her opting not to tell damon meant that he was allowed to think the worst for himself. she was in the wrong too, in some ways: she keeps expecting him to lash out the way he'd used to.

the way he hasn't in a long, long time. damon is no longer that person, and it's been a while since he has been that person. elena more than anyone has spent time with him upon his return. she's been privy to all of him, including the responsible, romantic, and self-possessed sides of him.

it isn't fair of her to react beforehand, already expecting the worst. it doesn't give him enough credit.

she finally turns, then, shifting in place until she is facing him. her hands are still tucked under her chin.
