Who: Agent Washington (
notthesecondworstfighter) and Adam Milligan (
halfwinchester)
Where: Mansion hallways, then someone's room.
When: Feb. 2nd, evening
Rating: PG-13 for now to be safe?
Summary: After running into each other, Wash and Adam hole up and try to stay awake all night to avoid unfortunate angel consequences. Basically, the worst slumber party ever. Of all time.
The Story:
[So, creepy stone angel statues that can kill you if you aren't watching them and even close your eyes in the quickest blink. That's crazy by anyone's standards, but even for Wonderland, Wash has decided that's pushing it. How the hell are they supposed to keep themselves all alive through this event, anyway? The statues had made their creepy way into the mansion and seemed to be around just about any corner you turned and it's really hard to not blink while you watch them and slowly make your getaway.
He'd be better off with people, he knows that. He's been trying to find people, but it seems like most of them are hiding or...something, because he sure hasn't seen anyone since the first or second day. They were all probably smarter than him about this he figures as he scuffs the floor with his armored boot. Most likely, he's completely screwed. If he can't shoot something to destroy it, he's pretty much at a loss and outside his area of expertise with dangerous things. Which, really? Makes it pretty damn scary.
Of course, he'd also nearly had his heart stop on him just a few minutes ago where he'd had to blink, and when he opened his eyes, there were two angels at the end of the hall where he'd just come from. God, this should not be a thing, these things should not be allowed.
Having it in his mind to just get back to his room and stay there for the next few days, Wash starts running down the hall, fully armored as per usual, even if he's doubting that'll help him any against these things. It's kind of a last resort, holing up in his room, but it's the only thing he can think of to do at this point to survive, so even if it's maybe not the best idea, it still seems a hell of a lot better than hanging around out here.]
[ooc: just let me know if anything should be changed about this!]

Not blinking is easy, but not blinking because you know you can't is hard. Too hard when these things might be able to kill a person if you screw up.
Down the hallway, Wash will come across a grey stone figure halfway inside an unoccupied room. The statue is a Weeping Angel, of course, but the shuffling sounds from inside... those come from a familiar tall, thin young man in the process of dragging a standing mirror toward the statue. When the statue first appeared in the corner of his eye, he could only think of one thing to do in a one-bedroom room, and that had been to take other people's advice about reflections and making the Weeping Angels look at themselves.
Maybe he should've thanked God for a magic closet within line of sight of the thing, but God and angels? Pretty much on the top of Adam's hit list..
It's a slow process when he literally can't look away from the monster, but he's determined to stand it right in front of the Weeping Angel before he tries slipping out past its reaching arms.]
oh god I'm so sorry for the absurdly long time this took
Adam?
[Incredulous, he just...sort of stares for a second. He hadn't expected to find this particular resident wandering around during this ridiculous event. After hearing about his trouble with real angels in the past, he'd thought that Adam would probably be taking shelter too. Unless that's what he's doing now and the angel thing just barged in on him, or something? Who even knows around here, really.
Shaking his head to rid himself of the series of thoughts, however, Wash focuses on the more important issue at hand. You know, the one where their lives are in danger and Adam looks like he's in trouble.]
Need some help?
no worries!
And then he remembers. Don't blink.]
Son of a--
[He hisses the words to himself, ripping his gaze away from the man and back to the angel statue. Thankfully, still a statue. Did it move? Did it... get closer?]
It didn't move, did it? Is it...?
no subject
...He thinks. Maybe 75% sure.]
No, I don't think so. I mean, I was watching it--? [It's sort of a question. But he's staring at it now and Adam isn't dead, so... Everything's okay, right? And he can make up for almost killing him accidentally by helping him out of the room. Maybe.]
Here, I'll watch it, you just-- Come here and get the hell away from it.
no subject
Maybe sometime soon his pulse will stop racing, though that's unlikely to happen with a stone monster ready to kill him. Always gotta be fucking angels.]
Can't. Not yet.
[He presses his lips into a hard line, maneuvering the mirror around until it's in position in front of the statue. Total focus. He needs to just grit his teeth and bear through this; he's half afraid that if he lets go of his concentration, he'll lose his mental grip and slide into a comatose state and just stay there, where there's none of this life or death stuff.
Only when he's done does he take a few slow steps backward toward the door, resisting the urge to bolt. The statue still doesn't move, even when Adam squeezes past it.
That's good, right?
He doesn't breathe until he's out in the hallway.]
It might be stuck now, I'm not sure.
no subject
As Adam finally makes his way to and out the door, Wash steps to the side to give him room, though he's still half-eyeing the statue while he watches the other man slip out. Even if he's heard this mirror trick works on these things, he's not sure how much he trusts that. They've managed to change what it is about people that they feed on or whatever while they're here, he's been told, so who's to say mirrors won't suddenly stop making them stay frozen?]
I think it is. [Still watching it, just to be safe, admittedly a bit scared to test just how stuck it is, if at all.] I heard mirrors work. Actually, I heard it's better if you get them to look at each other, but the mirrors are a good substitute.
[He watches it for another few moments before finally feeling reassured enough to glance over at Adam, eyebrows raised.]
You okay?
no subject
[Adam had heard mirrors worked, too, and on short notice? That's the only solution he could think of with his nerves screaming in fear. Better safe than sorry. If it'll work, if it'll hold them back, he'll take it.
But the simple answer to Wash's question is no, he's not okay, he's had more than one Weeping Angels sneak up on him without so much as a warning, and being here in the middle of Monster Town has his stomach squeezing itself to the point of nausea. The idea of two Weeping Angels is more than enough to make him wish for a pit of ghouls to throw himself into. Might as well. He'd probably be dead either way.
He avoids answering, avoids even taking his eyes off of the statue with Martha's warning in mind.]
Better get out of here. If it doesn't work, you're screwed, too.
no subject
His gaze ends up drifting back to the statue worriedly while waiting for a response from Adam, and even stays there for half a second after he hears the other speak.]
Good thought. [A curt nod, and Wash begins to back away from the doorway carefully, though he keeps himself going slow enough to make sure Adam keeps up and maybe even gets ahead of him. When it comes down to it, he'd protect someone over himself, and now that he considers Adam...something of a friend, that goes double. He'll do whatever he can to make sure the guy survives.]
I was planning to go back to my room, hide in there and maybe pull some mirrors out of the closet. Might be better with two of us so we can watch each others' backs?
no subject
Soon, they'll have the dark to contend with, too, which is fantastic. Nothing like the thought of turning on a light and finding a stone statue looming over you to put the fear of God in you.]
Is it close?
[He's wary, eyebrows drawing together. At this point, he doesn't have the luxury to assert his independence and turn a potentially helpful scenario down, but there's always that initial hesitation inside him now. Falling headfirst into Lucifer's Cage isn't just an experience that breeds resentment, it breeds mistrust and uncertainty, too.]
no subject
Should be. We're on the third floor, right?
[Eyes flitting to Adam for a second for confirmation, they soon settled back on the stone angel. Just to be safe. He didn't exactly want to play it fast and loose with these things, especially when he still wasn't completely sure what they'd do when they got a hold of you.]
It should be near the end of the hall.
[And if Adam says no to hiding in there, well... Wash will probably follow him up to his room, honestly. Safety in numbers, especially in this particular scenario. He won't force his presence on the guy if it's really unwelcome, but he'll definitely do what he can to keep the both of them safe.]
no subject
Yeah. [But don't ask him to ever be one hundred percent sure. He's stuck with a mind that plays tricks on him sometimes, with memory lapses to boot.] Mine's a lot father than that. Is yours going to be safe, though?
[At least he knows his room is hard to bust into for the average person. He'll take his chances with the space cadet over the Weeping Angels, but that doesn't mean anything if they don't have a safe place.]
no subject
When Adam confirms it, he's relieved to be right.]
About as safe as anywhere else? I don't think anywhere around here is particularly safe.
[But they can board up the door and shove all the furniture up against it. Then hide in a corner and take turns blinking or something. Should be safer than the hallways? At least it's a smaller space that they can probably keep free of these creepy statues, but he's open to suggestions.]
Unless you have a better idea?
[Better give it up soon because the longer they're out here, the more danger they're in, he's sure.]
no subject
[A safe room dreamed up to keep soul-sucking angels out would be nice, but if Wash has a room that's close and a door that locks, then that'll have to be a good enough start. Hopefully Wash doesn't mind mirrors, lots and lots of mirrors. Anything that might provide a distraction for statues that don't seem able to deal with a reflection of themselves.
Adam's pretty damn sure he doesn't look like somebody with a better idea, and he just makes a noncommittal gesture at the question. Wash might be giving him too much credit; he doesn't really know what he's doing, he's just along for the ride.]
Would've shared by now if I did. These aren't the angels I know, but they're just as bad. Either we get out of their way or we die, I'm guessing that's our one option.
no subject
[Come on, they're alien angel statues with supernatural powers that want to suck out their life force, or...something like that. He's doubting much can stop them. Especially here. Wonderland seems to enjoy screwing them over.]
Right. My room it is, then. At least we can drag a bunch of mirrors out of the closet in there.
[Fill the room with them if they have to, make his room look like it's owned by the most vain person in
the worldWonderland. He doesn't care. If it keeps them safe, he's all for it.Still watching the statue out of the corner of his eye, he nods to Adam, a gesture telling him to get moving down the hall.]
Come on, let's get moving. Wasting time here is just more likely to end badly for us.
[To make his point, he starts backing away once more, half-tempted to just grab Adam's arm and run, dragging him along behind. But he'll give the guy a chance to get moving on his own before he takes any drastic steps, so long as that freaking angel stays put.]
no subject
Against all expectations, demons aren't so bad for that. Crowley at least hadn't been, and Adam gets the feeling the guy's going to be just fine until this blows over, even if he can't say the same for himself. He gives Wash a look of quiet consternation before creeping in the direction the man had indicated. Definitely no sudden locomotion here.
As long as the statue stays put, that's all both of them can ask for. Adam would rather keep his eyes on it as long as possible to ensure it does.]
no subject
As much as he'd prefer to run flat out to get the hell away from these things, Wash settles for creeping along once Adam finally starts moving. He makes sure to stay between Adam and the statue, just in case things do go south for them--at least that way he can make sure one of them gets out okay.]
I'm pretty sure the mirror will hold the thing off for us. [Having noticed Adam's refusal to even experiment with looking away from the Weeping Angel, he feels like he should try to offer some comfort or...something.] I mean, I haven't heard anything to the contrary...?
[But, uh. He also hasn't heard from anyone in a while, so. Who really knows?]
no subject
Better hope the rumors are true.
[Adam hasn't heard enough from others in the mansion to satisfy him, either; it seems to be another one of those "every man for himself" episodes, to his great and utter joy. Wash isn't so bad, and in fact he's one of the people Adam's gotten on the easiest with despite the awkward personal history they've covered, but he doesn't really know anything about the guy and not much is likely to put a smile on Adam's face short of an instant and permanent fix. Say, snapping your fingers and popping these things like grapes.
Too bad that's not going to happen.]
Where?
[At least both ends of the hall are covered with two people watching. If Wash is going to watch the front, Adam can watch the rear, though at a certain point he has to slow and ask where to go next. There are a lot of damn rooms in these halls and they all look the same from the outside.]
no subject
[Wash points ahead of them, trying to gesture to the very far end of the hall. There are a lot of damn rooms down these hallways, and while his is on the very convenient floor, it's...not exactly in the most convenient location. Considering there are hundreds of rooms and his is down in the six hundreds...]
It's...pretty far down. Room 619.
[Hoping the distance doesn't bother Adam much, Wash keeps moving, maybe picking up his pace a little. The sooner they get there, the safer they are and thus better off they'll be, right? Hoping that Adam is indeed watching the hallway behind them, the space marine keeps his gaze focused ahead to prevent any statues from coming at them that way. No matter how tempted he is to look around and keep their surroundings under constant surveillance.]
About now, I'm wishing I'd picked the closest room to the stairs that I could...
no subject
Yeah, I kind of am, too.
[But then Adam's choice of room isn't much better--he'd picked the top floor precisely to get himself away from the rest of the mansion. If the Weeping Angels are smart they'd sit themselves down on the stairs, the same stairs everyone would be fleeing down if they wanted to leave.]
Why so far?
no subject
I don't know, I was just sort of wandering through the place on my first day here, and by the time I reached the room, I was exhausted. Decided to take it because it was convenient at the time.
[But hardly convenient now, obviously. Oh well. He'll heave apologies later when they're not trying to keep themselves alive and out of the stone hands of those creepy angels.
Thankfully, it doesn't take too much longer to get there, and Wash supposes they've done a decent job of not blinking since they haven't run across another angel yet. Keeping his gaze down his side of the hallway, he sidesteps toward the door to room 619 and reaches for the handle. Only as he pushes the door open does his shift his eyes to peer inside, to make sure they're safe if they go in. The only thing moving inside is Apricot the kitten, who looks up from where she's sleeping on the bed upon hearing the door open.]
We're clear. [Looking to Adam very briefly, he waves his hand in a gesture telling him to get inside.] You first.
[And with that out of the way, he takes to watching both ends of the halls to the best of his ability. The longer they can keep the things away from their relative location, the better off they'll be.]
no subject
You must really be into long walks.
[For the rest of the trip, he's silent for most of it, trying his best to keep his fear locked up tight where it won't come bubbling out. One of the few reasons Adam feels all right entering a strange room with a strange person is that the monsters outside the room are a lot more frightening; he breathes a quiet sigh of relief when they reach the room where at least one of them knows the layout.
At Wash's signal, he goes in, not without looking to and fro for aforementioned Weeping Angels. The cat doesn't seem to be scared out of its mind, and it's not dead yet, so that's... a good sign, right?]
no subject
We should probably block the door.
[Hooking a thumb over his shoulder to point to the very door in question, he takes a couple of hurried steps forward and points to the desk.]
I can push this up against it if you want to start pulling some mirrors out of the closet?
[He's not exactly used to taking the lead in any dire situations, much more used to being the follower, so his words come out more as suggestions than demands. If Adam wants, they can switch jobs, he doesn't mind, he just wants to keep them both safe. Considering he's pretty sure Adam feels the same way, he doubts he'll get any complaints, but still. They can talk it out better if he wants to.]
no subject
And truth be told, not having winged automatons barking orders as the angels he knows tend to do is better than being the dummy on a string as he, himself, tends to be. If neither of them know what the hell they're doing, they're even.]
The last one I ran into didn't get in. It could be enough.
[He nods, agreeing.
Then again, Crowley had helped by slapping up a bunch of shit on the walls and door, but it's not like Adam knows how to replicate that stuff... He'll be happy with mirror duty and just try to cover as many bases as possible.]
Okay.
[Nope, no complaints here. Go Team Survival.]
no subject
[Not that he's trying to jinx them, or anything. His brain just likes to dig up a lot of the negative possibilities in bad situations and let him worry about them the entire time. And Weeping Angels being able to get to them even with the door closed, locked, and barricaded is definitely worst-case scenario.
Glad to have Adam's agreement on the case though, Wash returns the nod and immediately gets to tugging the desk away from the wall and slowly shoving it toward the door. It makes a horrible screeching noise against the metal flooring, but thankfully the last thing they have to worry about right now is being quiet. ...He thinks. Hopes.
Once the desk is successfully wedged against the door in a way that should keep anyone and everything out until this awful event is over, Wash slumps against it with a sigh. He still feels on edge, worrying about that whole materializing thing, but there's some semblance of safety now, at least. Something between them and the creepy angels.
Stepping back, taking a moment to tug off his helmet now because he's been informed it can be unsettling to be around a guy and never see his face, he glances over to see how Adam's doing.]
Please tell me you're actually getting mirrors out of there, and not...whatever Wonderland might find it funny to give you instead.
no subject
As far first times at the rodeo go, Adam's getting used to pulling mirrors out of magic closets on short notice--along with everything else a person can think of over weeks and months living in Wonderland. All he finds he needs to do is cover as many bases as he can when he thinks of what he wants, so he treats the closet like a catalogue he can flip through in his mind. Once he settles on the item he wants, the closet makes it happen.
He's moved two standing mirrors out of the closet by the time Wash finishes barricading the door, small and light enough to rearrange how they need but able to stand up in a frame on their own.]
Like a disco ball?
[A thing that reflects light in all directions sounds about right for Wonderland's sense of humor, but when Adam carries the first mirror into view, they clearly haven't entered the disco era just yet.]
There's another one to catch the other angle.
no subject
Or one of those tiny mirrors for applying makeup.
[He can joke back about the possibilities too, see? That doesn't stop it from being an immense relief to see that Adam has some actual, proper mirrors that will prove useful if their barricade fails. Big ones too, thank god. Wash actually releases a second sigh at that. Maybe they aren't completely fucked.]
Great. [His tone is almost something enthusiastic as he moves away from the desk and toward the closet to grab for the other mirror. It's good to know they've got their bases covered and an actual chance here, that's all.] You think we'll need more than two?
[Tugging the second mirror out of the closet, he starts to move it into position and casts a glance Adam's way, seeking his opinion. Of course, they both have about equal experience with the things, but...still. He feels more helpless about this whole thing than he likes. At least usually when he's in dangerous situations, he had Carolina to look to for instructions. Here it's all...up to him. And he knows he's no leader.]
no subject
Like now. Now would be good. He's survived this long in Wonderland without a pair of brothers pulling his ass out of the fire (or throwing him into the fire), he can get through one more event, can't he? God, he hopes so, because he really doesn't know shit about these Weeping Angels.]
If these two can't cover the door by themselves, maybe another. One to face the window.
[And if they're going to go full on circus fun house... He looks at Wash, eyebrows raised.]
You could just wish your room to be one floor to ceiling mirror.
no subject
Nodding at Adam's suggestion, Wash settles his mirror into place facing the door. There, that should be good. But maybe one more, just to cover the center would be even better. Better safe than sorry, right? Even if it might be excessive, it could also save their hides.
He's about to move back to the closet when Adam brings up his next suggestion.]
I-- ...I guess I could. [Blinking, he stands back up straight and glances over at Adam, uncertainty in his expression. He's not so sure he wants to do that... The idea of every surface being a mirror sounds uncomfortable.] It might be a little excessive though, don't you think? I mean, if we can cover both of the possible entrances...
[Okay, it's actually a good idea, but he literally just doesn't want his room to be one big mirror. What if Wonderland thinks it's funny to not let him change it back after all this is over???]
no subject
It's still strange to have others defer to him, even if that's everything he's craved for a long time.]
It wasn't a serious suggestion, but it's not like it's not doable.
[Hey, do what you want, but is there really such a thing as excessive survival?]
