Death is only permanent on the Mirror side. He's fine. He has to be fine. And that's what Dipper keeps telling himself until they have the door open and are crashing into Stan. He is fine. Or at least, he is alive.]
Grunkle Stan!

On top of that though, he's been worried about Dipper and Mabel. He never heard back from them after his message, and he even took a peek to see if they were in their room, but it was empty. He's been trying to convince himself that the lack of bodies is a good thing, and that they're totally fine! But, he's mostly just lying to himself. He has no idea how they are and it's killing him again.
Having them burst through his door and crash into him is probably the best thing that could have ever happened to him.]
Kids! [He crouches down and squeeze them both tight as he can.] You two had me worried! Answer your phones once in a while would ya?!
[He's not sincerely stern. He's just so, so relieved to see them alive and well.]
I'M A FAILURE IT'S ME.
[annnd there she goes sobbing, her incoherent mess of an explanation cut off before it can become more convoluted.]

We were stuck. We couldn't do anything. We... we saw afterwards, and--
[He shakes his head, squeezing Mabel's shoulder tightly.]
no subject
Oh, uh. ...You kids saw that, huh?
[That's the last thing he would have wanted them to witness. The two of them have dealt with enough death in Wonderland without watching him kick the bucket.]
I dunno how much you saw, but...I'm alright now. I came back good as new! See? I'm sorry you kids had to see all that grisly stuff, but I'm all better and there's nothin' to worry about. You've got nothin' to be sorry about, kids.

[annnd there she goes again, because Stan's pretending everything is fine, and it's not. for once, she can't even try to pretend, because he doesn't even know.] No, we do. We know what happens when you get too many deaths. We could've warned you. Maybe you could've...
[what exactly? she doesn't even know what happened or how fast it was or if it was even preventable. all she knows is that dying has a cost now. she pulls back a bit, looking up at him with tear-soaked red eyes.] Do you feel like you're... Missing anything?
[maybe that's the trick- she and Dipper were too removed from their deaths to recall what might have been missing. maybe if Stan knew what he was looking for, they could figure it out.]

He puts a hand to his chest, like he's feeling around to figure out what they mean by something missing.]
Uh. I don't think so? Not that I've noticed...
[However, it reminds him of something that is missing, and his shoulders fall.]
...But, uh. Ford's Mirror took off with the Journals. He shot me with some science gun or whatever and walked off with them like a-- like a smug jerk!
[The word that came to mind was significantly less PG, and even though the kids are getting older he still can't help censoring himself. He sighs though, slumping again.]
I tried, but...I couldn't do anything to stop him. He's still got 'em.

We don't care about the journals. [though she makes a mental note to check her own stuff (and Dipper's), and especially their AI stuff. it would be just like their Mirrors to ransack all their hard work.] I'm just glad you and Grunkle Ford are okay.

[He just really hopes they can keep having each other. There have been enough deaths.]
no subject
Seriously? You spent all summer tryin' to figure those out!
[All that effort and they just chucked them in the bottomless pit? Really?
...Wait.]
Wait, wouldn't they just, y'know - get spit back up outta the hole?

[Ford's entry on the Bottomless Pit in the Journal hadn't been there until they were restored after Bill's death. But Dipper's read it now.]
A lot of stuff just comes back, usually within a day. Some stuff, though, never returns. Like the Journals.
no subject
Eesh. Guess we all lucked out there. Especially me, since I fell in it twice!
[He laughs, but once he says it it doesn't really feel funny, especially given the circumstances, so he just awkwardly rubs the back of his neck]
Uh. Glad you kids aren't too heartbroken over the whole thing, I guess. Still sorry you had to find out about it though...

It's the little things. And with that in mind, she hugs Stan's arm a little tighter.] Hey, you weren't gone forever. It could've been way worse.

[There should probably have been safety rails around a lot of parts of the Mystery Shack. But! At least everyone always wore their seatbelts and helmets!]
Just... don't do it again, okay? I know we get more lives than we do at home, but they're not unlimited.
[And there's a cost they haven't totally figured out yet. That's the really scary part.]
no subject
Yeah - I sure as heck don't plan on it. But that goes for you too, alright? No more dyin' for anyone in this family. Everyone's immortal forever, startin' right now. Your Grunkle Ford too.
[It is The Law; Stan has decreed it.]
