His pulse races at her approach. If he's right, this ends terribly for him. If he's wrong, then it might end just as badly. He maintains the eye contact as much as she does, but it's not out of any natural instinct. He can't look away. He can't take a stand like this and then immediately back down. But if the intent is Asgardian trickery and mind control, wouldn't she need eye contact? There might not be a way out of this with any level of safety. He swallows.

But then she reminds him of the larger threat, and he pulls his attention away and gives a longer look to the looming threat above them. They are getting closer. He scowls, and turns away from her to begin tearing down his setup. It'll at least give him a chance to signal to Jemma that something's come up, so she'll be aware that her alert level might want to jump up a notch.
