It may very well be the worst thing that's ever happened to you! | OPEN MINGLE

Who: EVERYONE!
Where: EVERYWHERE!
When: Friday October 27th - Tuesday October 31st
Rating: PG-13, warn if you're gonna go higher!
Summary: A catch all for the Horrible Memory Truth Event!
The Story:

For the duration of this event, everyone's entire room will be replaced with a memory playing on loop. They will likely recognize the moment as soon as they see it – it is a moment they remember as the worst moment of their entire lives. It could be a memory from home or something that happened in Wonderland. Lengths of the memories will vary, but they will find that these are not memories they can merely watch – they can step into these memories and attempt to make changes to them, and the memories will be long enough that they have time to make changes (though no more than 24 hours). However, anyone who tries will find that it is futile. No matter what you do or how hard you try, the outcome is always exactly the same somehow. No changes you make will prevent that horrible outcome. It just happens over and over and over again no matter what you do.

On top of that, perhaps complicating any attempts to make changes, everyone will be forced to be honest for the duration of the event. No lies or half-truths are allowed, and filters will be gone for the entire five days. If something bothers someone then they will blurt it out, regardless of whether or not it hurts someone's feelings, and no one will be able to simply keep quiet when they have something to say. They must be truthful and honest with every word they say.

This is a catch-all log for all of your Worst Memory needs! Please mark your threads clearly in the subject line with your character's name and Room Number + Floor for character rooms, or just location if you're making a top level for a public place in the mansion (like the tea rooms or the kitchen) so people can see if there's already a thread available. And here's the plot post if you need it!

Have fun!

"Oh. I thought it might have been that, but it seemed a little silly to be jealous of them about that immediately after talking about whether or not you were still a good person. Something of a step down in importance, I suppose."

This, honestly, is one of Toriel's least favorite things about this truth stuff. The inability to hold back small, dumb things like that. It makes her seem very petty and sounding like she's looking down on them.

"Not that you are not allowed to feel that way, it is a perfectly valid thing to be bothered about. But still... I think, something that you do not need to be so bothered about. You do not need to place so much value upon me, or having me as your mother. Your own worth does not depend on what others think of you."

"This is not very good advice." The words come very quickly after, because... well, she feels it's true. It's nice to say, just some generic positive things, but... it's not going to deal with the loneliness that a child with no family would feel. "I just... I feel like there is something I am trying to say, but I cannot quite get the words to form. And I do not even know if it would be helpful." She takes a moment, collecting her thoughts, before continuing. "I am not the only person that could be your family. I do not say that as an attempt to pawn you off onto someone else, and I do not think that you should try to force that kind of relationship. I am not saying you should go off looking for someone to fill that spot in your life. It should develop naturally, like it has between you and Chara. They are your family, and there is no denying that."

[After making sure her own room is secure, Stark is the first item on Natasha's to-do list. It's a little embarrassing how long it takes her to get to it. But by the time she makes her way up, she's no longer pale and shaken, putting on a close approximation to her best professional face, so she'll allow herself that it was worth the extra time.

At the door, she hesitates. Might be better not to go in. Considering what happened in her own room, it's a strong possibility.

However, if Tony is in there—if he's in there reliving the sort of thing she saw herself—then there's a stronger argument to be made for trying.

Somehow, what she finds inside isn't what she expected.]

So that's how it happened.

[Said with a slight wince and real sympathy for both him and Steve.]

Skye tore through the ship, fearing she wouldn’t make it in time before her mother and the other Inhumans who still followed her got off the ship with the Terrigen Crystals. She couldn’t let her mother start this war against S.H.I.E.L.D.

“I’ll go after her.” Skye could see the panic in May’s eyes.

“Skye, I’ll do it. I’ve done it before.”

“No.”

“You have to be willing to—“

“I won’t hesitate. What ever it takes.”

Skye found her just as her men were getting ready to put the case of Terrigen Crystals on the plane.

“Mom! Stop! You can’t do this!” Skye watches as her men put the case down, preparing to fight for Jiaying’s cause.

“No, put them on the jet and get ready for takeoff.”

“I can’t let you leave with those crystals.” Skye knows that she can’t hesitate, even if this woman stand before her is her mother. A mother she had spent her entire life searching for. One disappointment after another, but this? This is the biggest disappointment of them all. Her own mother lied to her. Killed so many people. This is never what she imagined when she dreamed about one day meeting her.

“You can, and you should. It’s the only way to protect our people.”

“It’s not. There are other ways.” Skye was desperate to get through to her mother. To get her to understand that as much as she feels that she is protecting the Inhumans, so many innocent people could die at the hands of her.

“Whose ways? S.H.I.E.L.D.? No. Their way is what got us here.”

“You started this war!”

“This war started decades ago, when S.H.I.E.L.D. was founded to the guard the world against people like us. And it will never end. But you and I together, think of how powerful we could be. We could launch a revolution. Side by side.”

“I don’t want your revolution, because this isn’t about protecting me or your people. This is about hate.”

“No, you’re wrong.”

“It’s consumed you. You can’t even tell right from wrong. I can’t let you destroy any more lives.” They both knew the threat behind Skye’s words, except it wasn’t just a threat. She would go through with it. Skye knew there was no more talking her way out of this, Jiaying was too set on her ways.

“My daughter. So beautiful. So strong.” Hands cupping Skye’s face, Jiaying activated her power. Her power which sucked the lives out of others in order to prevent her from aging, or to heal herself. Skye could feel it instantly and could barely breathe.

“Mom. What are you…?”

“I always believed the reason I endured all that torture and pain was for you, that you were my gift. But you’re not. This is.”

Struggling to breathe Skye managed to gasp out a desperate plea,

“Don’t… Do this.”

“You made your choice. I’m sorry.”

Gathering as much strength as she could, Skye was able to knock the ship with the crystals off of the side of the ship and into the ocean.

Enraged Jiaying went for Skye again, instantly activating her powers again. Only this time Skye was prepared for her and rested her hand on her mothers shoulder, using her power to shake her from the inside.

“Please. Stop.”

Skye and Jiaying turned to see Cal, her father and Jiaying’s husband standing there.

“You don’t have to do this.” Cal was just as desperate for this to end without more death as Skye was, but he knew better. His attention turned to Skye.

“You don’t have to live with that pain. I will.” In an instant, Cal paralyzesJiaying and her hands fell free of Skye, who crumpled to the floor. Watching as the horror unfolded.

“Cal…? What are you doing?” Jiaying asked weakly.

“Keeping my promise.” Lifting her, Cal squeezes her hard enough to break her spine which kills her.

Skye could hear the bones snap, watching on as her mother went completely limp in his arms. Cal knelt to the floor, holding her while he sobbed.

All of these years searching for her parents, and her father killed her mother to protect her. To protect everyone.

[Daisy watches on in horror despite instantly knowing that this wasn't right. Still, Daisy desperately tries to change it. To try and knock her mother out without actually calling to her. She tries a few different ways, but each time it ends with her mother dead. Noticing on the fourth time the door that looks very much like the door to her room in wonderland, Daisy suddenly realizes. This was what Alice had warned them about. Eyes falling shut when she hears her mother's spine snap again Daisy could feel the hot tears rolling down her cheeks. Letting out a shaky gasp she finally managed to make it to the door and quickly stepped out and shut it behind her.

Everything out in the hallway looked normal. Knees weak, Daisy slid down the closed door before pulling her knees to her chest. If anyone came across her here they would probably hear her sobs before they spotted her on the floor.]

[This wasn't just happening to a select few. This was happening to everyone and it didn't take long for Daisy to realize that everyone was experiencing the worst memories of their lives. It only seems to be happening in their rooms though, which is why people have taken elsewhere to rest or do anything to distract themselves from having to relive those memories again.

Daisy has checked in on some people to see how they were doing, but also respected that they might want some time alone. Daisy never really opened up about how this affected her with her team back home, and they never pushed to talk about it either. Using the fitness center as a means to not just get in a work out, but to also distract herself. Daisy is there for a while, practically punching a hole in the punching bag.

Unsurprisingly she frequented the kitchen and the coffee shop because God knows she wasn't going to get any sleep. When she wasn't there she might be seen around comforting people to the best of her ability. After all there was only so much she could do for them. The bar seemed to be a hot spot for a lot people too. Daisy being one of them. This event was definitely up there as far as one of the worst. Actually. No. This was the worst one for her so far.]

[ Not again.

Mondo always chooses the worst timing to waltz into food places, be it the dining room or the kitchen. Now that he's already here, there's no way he can just waltz out like he saw nothing, right? Tsumiki's face is raining quite heavily there, and it's pretty audibly... storming. Goddammit, he never knows what to do on these situations but it's hard to ignore the amount of things she's trying to cradle in those tiny arms. ]

There's no way Mondo can work up some appetite after all that he's seen. This is nothing new for him since the mindscape, but geez. Still sucker-punches him on the stomach every goddamn time. After locking his room and much wandering around, he decides to just sit down and space out for a bit. Probably not sleeping tonight, who knows if people get an access to his head again. Not a fun time for anyone, really. Down his bum goes to one of the other couches in the hall, across where another man seems to be munching his chips away. Hey, like misery, apathy loves company. It's not a bad feeling to see someone who sees things the same way, sort of.

While he doesn't usually like striking up conversations with strangers unless necessary, his curiosity gets the better of him. "Hey, didja see some awful stuff back in your room too?" Words flow so smoothly out of his mouth, he doesn't even get a chance to catch and turn them around, not even for a lap. Well. Whatever. They are awful stuff.

[This event has certainly proven to be a harsh reminder of the darker side of life in Wonderland. That's even more of a reason why this trip seemed like an appealing idea. He felt very relieved and glad when Sayaka agreed to join in on this trip. He wanted to bring her as far away from her worst memories as he possibly could.

And so hear they were. With his hard work complete, Kiyotaka had just wiped some sweat from his forehead with a towel. Once Sayakya starts speaking to him, a smile starts to tug at his lips, while he also feels an odd sense of nervousness.]

Dipper's memory starts with him sitting in front of a beaten up looking old laptop with the words "Property of F" along the top. He's in front of a large, triangular window. He's typing in passwords, and every time they're wrong, a loud buzzer goes off. Dipper looks exhausted, like he hasn't slept in three days, which isn't far from the truth. "Passwords. Passwords. Mabel. Is. Useless." He yawns. "Oh, man…"

The computer blares a noise and a timer comes up. "Too many failed entries. Initiate data erase in five minutes."

Dipper jumps up. "No! Noonono! I'm gonna lose everything?! I only have one more try?!"

Suddenly, everything turns black and white. Except the window, which turns into a yellow triangle with a top hat and one eye. Bill Cipher. "Well, well, well. Someone's looking desperate."

Dipper glares at him. "I thought I told you to leave me alone."

"I can help you, kid." A gold cane appears in Bill's hand. "You just need to hear out my demands."

Dipper looks at the computer, as it counts down to four minutes. "What crazy thing do you want anyway? To eat my soul? To rip out my teeth? Are you gonna replace my eyes with baby heads or something?"

Bill holds up his hands. "Yeesh, kid, relax. All I want is a puppet!"

Dipper squints at him. "A puppet? What are you playing at?"

"Everyone loves puppets. And it looks to me that you've got a surplus." Bill gestures to a tree filled with sock puppets.

"I don't know, man." Dipper glances down. "Mabel worked really hard on these."

"Seems to me one little puppet is a small price to pay to learn all the secrets of the universe." Bill's voice echoes on the last word, his body turning from yellow bricks to a field of stars. "Besides, what's your sister done for you, lately? How many times have you sacrificed for her, huh? And when has she ever returned the favor?" He grows larger, the bottom portion of his body replaying scenes from earlier in the summer, moments when Dipper made sacrifices for Mabel. All the ways he gives to her. No ways she ever gives back.

Dipper looks at Mabel, outside in the yard making sock puppets with her friends, and at the computer, which now has 30 seconds on the clock.

Bill's eye turns into a clock. "Tick tock, kid." He offers Dipper a hand, ringed in blue fire.

"Uh, just one puppet? Fine!" Dipper takes the offered hand. "So what puppet are you gonna pick, anyway?"

"Hmm, let's see. Eenie meenie mynie…" He focuses his attention on Dipper, voice getting low and even more echoey. "YOU." And with a yank, he tugs Dipper out of his own body.

"Huh?" Dipper looks down at his newly transparent body and puts an arm through his chest. "This can't be happening! What did you do to my body?!"

Dipper's body gets up, but it's jerky, wrong, like someone who only knows intellectually how human bodies are supposed to work is in the pilot seat now. He looks up, and his eyes are yellow and slitted. Like Bill's eyes. "Sorry, kid but you're MY puppet, now!" He laughs madly and throws the laptop on the floor, slamming his foot into it,.

The memory continues. Bill has no problems mistreating the body he's in, declaring "PAIN IS HILARIOUS!" as he slaps himself. He tumbles backwards down the stairs and slams his arm into a drawer, declaring, "Boy, these arms are durable!" Dipper floats after him, trying to get the attention of anyone else, but no one can see him.

When the real Dipper tries to intervene, he finds himself just as invisible. While people outside the memory can see his ghost, anyone who steps in will find he's vanished. At least he knows he can possess puppets this time. But try as he might, he can't get anyone to listen.

[Once he gets out of his room, he doesn't go back. He stays with Mabel in the youth center or takes refuge in the library. When the truth telling gets too much for him, he goes to his favorite hiding place down in the caves.

He reads. He hangs out with Mabel, who knows all his secrets even if he still isn't eager to blurt them out. He rubs his arm where he can still feel the ghosts of Bill's fork-induced injuries.

He doesn't want to talk about it. But when he's around other people, he finds he can't help it. This event sucks.]

It's something he's thought about often, in terms of history. How can he not?]

I've received a great deal of understanding from those whom replied to my broadcast about this event. Some anger as well, but... A truth spoken because of the event, and inconsequential at present.] And I've told each of them that it doesn't matter if this isn't my fault, or anything I ever wanted. I still feel responsible, against all logical reasoning.

Grief is no different from guilt in that aspect, Miss Carter. Your understanding--no one can expect it to dull the pain. Not even you.

[Speaking of things that shouldn't have been said. He remembers well, how many times the Time Masters told him that Savage's existence was part of the natural flow of time, up to and including the death of Rip's family. Professionally, Rip understood that on some level.

And yet he'd never once accepted it.]

her mouth opens and she's about to tell him so in curt dispassionate detail. but...but he keeps talking, keeps telling truths, and the one good thing about the damned opposite side of this event is that one honest answer seems able to quickly supplant another. she blurts what's left on the tip of her tongue, not swimming in the back of her thoughts. ]

As much as I'd rather wave it off -- the sentiment is entirely mutual.

[ peggy admits with a sharp pull of breath. as though this much of an overture is ordinarly more difficult to give than the circumstances allow. she's talking about more than just what's been forcefully shared in this conversation -- they've been stumbling across each others secrets for months now. and beyond that, their wednesday evenings have been replete with piecing together profiles, character studies, little scraps of theories and impressions.

all of it carries with it a certain protected status. partially because there's too much fertile ground for mutually assured destruction. partially because she's beginning to see rip hunter as a friend. or something like it. ]
