It may very well be the worst thing that's ever happened to you! | OPEN MINGLE
Who: EVERYONE!
Where: EVERYWHERE!
When: Friday October 27th - Tuesday October 31st
Rating: PG-13, warn if you're gonna go higher!
Summary: A catch all for the Horrible Memory Truth Event!
The Story:
For the duration of this event, everyone's entire room will be replaced with a memory playing on loop. They will likely recognize the moment as soon as they see it – it is a moment they remember as the worst moment of their entire lives. It could be a memory from home or something that happened in Wonderland. Lengths of the memories will vary, but they will find that these are not memories they can merely watch – they can step into these memories and attempt to make changes to them, and the memories will be long enough that they have time to make changes (though no more than 24 hours). However, anyone who tries will find that it is futile. No matter what you do or how hard you try, the outcome is always exactly the same somehow. No changes you make will prevent that horrible outcome. It just happens over and over and over again no matter what you do.
On top of that, perhaps complicating any attempts to make changes, everyone will be forced to be honest for the duration of the event. No lies or half-truths are allowed, and filters will be gone for the entire five days. If something bothers someone then they will blurt it out, regardless of whether or not it hurts someone's feelings, and no one will be able to simply keep quiet when they have something to say. They must be truthful and honest with every word they say.
This is a catch-all log for all of your Worst Memory needs! Please mark your threads clearly in the subject line with your character's name and Room Number + Floor for character rooms, or just location if you're making a top level for a public place in the mansion (like the tea rooms or the kitchen) so people can see if there's already a thread available. And here's the plot post if you need it!
Have fun!

[ It doesn't help, of course. Doesn't change. He raises the gun up to her again, saying the same words...
I was gonna shoot you at Palmetto...
She steals a glance at Lucifer, knowing she has so much to explain. There isn't time now, though. Not with Graham reading his gun, preparing to kill them both. ]
no subject
Again, that's the only thing that keeps him rooted in place, the knowledge that she doesn't die here, that Trixie survives as well. Someone will save them or she'll save herself. Either way, that's all that matters.]
...Detective?
[He needs her to tell him what to do. He doesn't particularly want to take a bullet, either. He just wants to help.
It's like backwards deja vu.]no subject
Go.
[ She pulls him with her, dragging him away from the open area of the warehouse and towards the shelves, towards her hiding place. She's tried others, but none of them make any difference besides making it harder to see what Graham does to Lucifer. The location doesn't matter, though; she doesn't have to see it for it to hurt every time.
Once she drags Lucifer behind a palette, his voice starts to carry from behind him - the memory of him approaching Malcolm, taunting him. Chloe's grip on Lucifer's hand tightens and she turns to look at him, her eyes wide. ]
You weren't supposed to be here. [ It's the only thing she can manage to say, as if it will somehow make the next part of the memory any easier. ]
no subject
His voice.
Well, isn't that strange? Or perhaps, not strange at all.
He turns toward the scene with obvious curiosity, peering through the openings to watch.]
Yes, well, if you've learned anything about me, Detective, it's that I tend to be drawn to places I'm told I'm not supposed to be.
[In this case, he must have followed her or something. It isn't as if it doesn't happen the other way around, too.]
no subject
She knows how he's likely to handle this. Watching himself be shot; he'll probably look on it with bizarre fascination, shrug it off as no big deal. Maybe he can help her understand how she was sure she watched him die only to see him get up again to save her and Trixie.
It is then that is also occurs to her how different this situation is, now that she knows the truth. He knew she made him mortal, knew that he was putting his life in danger, and yet he followed her anyway. She would have done the same for him, of course, but it carries a different meaning, knowing what she knows now. ]
He's going to shoot you. [ Their voices are still filtering through, and Chloe looks at Lucifer instead of trying to see what's going on. She has time now, at least, to fill him in, to let him know how this all turns out. ] Then he's going to come after me... Us, now, I guess. Then you distract him and I kill the son of a bitch. [ She takes a breath, pausing long enough for more of their conversation to filter through. ] We'll be fine, we just have to get through this.
no subject
Life with mortals isn't nearly so simple, and he's all too mortal these days, in more ways than one.
He turns to look at her briefly as she speaks, his brow furrowing. For a brief moment, he forgets what happens when she's near. He should be able to shrug off a bullet like it's nothing, except when the Detective shot him, he'd bled quite easily.
If he gets shot now, it's not going to bounce off. Then again, if he's going to distract that asshole a moment later, perhaps it's not so bad. He nods at her, not looking nearly as sure of himself as he might have shortly beforehand.]
Why wouldn't we just shoot him right now?
no subject
[ She gestures towards the cars, shooting him a slightly annoyed look as if to say, You don't think I've already thought of that?. ]
We can't change anything, Lucifer. I tried. No matter what, you get shot and I end up hiding. I watched... [ She pauses again, resting her head against the pallet behind her. ] I thought you were dead.
[ She's not sure what else to say, but she doesn't need to. It's then when the shot rings out, and Chloe winces, pressing her eyes shut as she hears him fall to the floor. ]
no subject
[He looks briefly sheepish, only turning to look back at the scene unfolding when she leans her head back. His shoulders tense at the sound of the gunshot, despite knowing it's coming, and he watches himself fall, sees the entry point of the bullet.
As expected, his expression is curious, but also stricken.]
Do whatever it is that comes next, Detective. I need to check something.
[He starts moving in the opposite direction, towards where Graham is leaving his bleeding body behind.]
no subject
What? Lucifer. [ She hisses at him quietly but lets him go, gathering herself together as she hears Graham start to move around to look for her. She will let Lucifer do whatever he needs to do. If nothing else, she needs to distract Graham away from Lucifer, get him on track to finishing the memory the way he is supposed to.
She pushes herself up and creeps in the opposite direction of Lucifer, sneaking as quietly as she can to round around Graham, doing her best to keep an eye on him while still staying a few steps ahead. ]
no subject
He can hear his own voice, talking to himself. No, talking to someone else.
He very clearly hears the word Dad, followed by something that makes his heart sink into the pit of his stomach. He didn't just get shot.
He just watched himself die after asking his Father for a very important favor.
Graham is nowhere near, now. If the Detective is correct, he should get up at any moment to create the distraction she spoke of, but looking at himself now, he doesn't see how that's possible. Death would have sent him directly back to Hell, so unless--
--and then he watches himself sit bolt upright, take in a few shuddering breaths. His wound is simply missing, his shirt, whole. Even the blood trickling from his mouth is gone. His eyes glow red, and then he's walking away from him, and Lucifer watches with unblinking eyes.
He follows.]
no subject
She crouches down, rushing towards her guns, catching a glimpse of Graham out of the corner of her eye as she runs. She hears Lucifer hit him and grabs for one of her guns, turning just in time to see Graham push himself up and come towards Lucifer. Just in time to steady her gun and shoot him over and over directly into his chest.
Watching him fall back, she finally feels like she can breathe again. ]
no subject
She'd thought he was dead. Turns out, she isn't all that far off. Not at all.
Graham falls, and though Lucifer can hear him wheezing, knowing that he's carrying on a conversation with his memory twin, he's not listening anymore. He's more focused on Chloe.]
Do you need to fetch Trixie before we get out of here? I think we can simply leave through the door I entered.
[He wants to get out of here ASAP. Sorry, Detective.]
no subject
She'll come out, just... Just give me a minute. We can go, I just want to see her one more time.
[ As if on cue Trixie appears, coming out from her hiding place and running towards her mother. Chloe gathers her daughter into her arms and holds her close, breathing her in one last time because she knows once they leave, she isn't coming back. The memory doesn't give her very long with her daughter before it restarts, and Chloe hangs onto every moment before it fades away and loops back to the start. It's only then that she turns back to Lucifer, holding back her tears, unable to even look to where Graham is holding Trixie because if she looks at her, she won't be able to leave.
She moves past him quickly towards the door he came into, avoiding his eyes even as they move out of the room and into the hallway. ]
no subject
He barely watches the rest of the scene unfold, lost in his thoughts. Eventually, though, he can tell that everything is starting over, and Chloe is moving toward the door. He follows after her without a word into the hallway.
Finally, once they're a decent distance away from the room, he speaks.]
There was something similar happening in my room. [A beat.] I had to close Lux down for the time being.
[He's not saying it because he's upset about it. It's the only way he can think of to commiserate with her.]
Perhaps we should find an unoccupied place to sit down for awhile.
no subject
It doesn't occur to her what happened to Lucifer until he speaks and she raises her eyes, finally looking at him. She wipes away what is left of her tears. ]
Another memory? [ She wants to ask him what it is, but it's hard to push it right now. ] Yeah, let's just sit down and regroup. I'd like to get an idea of what is going on. [ Chloe gestures down the hallway. ] I don't know if we should risk going into any of the rooms. Do you think the unoccupied ones are safe?
no subject
[He leaves it at that for now.]
It's hard to say. It's possible that any bedroom we step into will simply become another memory just by being present in it. Maybe unoccupied isn't the best route to go.
[He starts heading down the stairs.]
Why don't we go find a chair or two in the front foyer?
no subject
After all, he was the ruler of Hell. Wonderland probably had plenty of memories to choose from. ]
That sounds safest.
[ She follows him down the stairs, lost in her own thoughts until they find a quiet area in the foyer. Other people in the mansion have started escaping their own rooms, it seems, and Chloe is more than happy to tuck herself away in a corner with Lucifer. Once they've sat down, she leans onto her knees, pushing her hair out of her face with her palms. ]
Uh, thanks. For getting me out of that. I don't even know how long I was in there.
no subject
[Maybe he'd been so desperate to get away from his that he figured it out sooner. At least the Detective's ended with something that wasn't completely horrible, no matter how terrifying it might have been for her.
He's sitting near her, though not quite touching, knees bent toward his chest, arms loosely folded against them.]
I didn't think I would be quite so integral to the worst day of your life.
no subject
I wasn't thinking about, I guess.
[ Chloe glances up at him. Being close to him helps, knowing he's safe and alive. It makes that memory feel further away than it was just moments before. ] I mean... I thought you were dead. I thought Trixie was dead. And it was my fault.
no subject
He can feel the warmth radiating off of her in their close proximity, a quiet comfort he hadn't particularly noticed before.]
None of that was your fault, Detective. I do believe the vile murderer is the only person to blame, in this case. [He pauses, before adding in an almost lost tone:] You thought correctly, though, at least in part. I was dead, however briefly.
[He'd checked it himself.]
no subject
[ If Amenadiel ever shows up in Wonderland, there will be words.
She shifts a little closer, tilting her head to look up at him. She's not entirely sure she wants to know; until this point, she has been so worried about what will happen if he dies in Wonderland, it hasn't quite registered what it means if he dies at home. Does he go straight back to Hell? Would he be able to come back if he wanted to, or would he be trapped there? Chloe finds herself with a growing list of questions, expecting that at least half of them are ones even Lucifer wouldn't know how to answer.
Chloe has to know, though. He clearly parted with her in the memory to find out what happened, and he obviously had his answer. ]
What happened?
no subject
From there, he can make an educated guess.]
I can't be entirely certain, but--
[While he wouldn't lie to her, not even if he were capable, details spring out that he might otherwise censor.]
--while I was lying there, I was...asking my Father for a favor.
[He looks over at her, expression somber.]
I told him I would be the son he wanted if he protected you. [He pauses, brows furrowing as he realizes exactly what that could entail, and affected by the fact that he still asked for it, knows that he would do it again.] Then, I assume I went to Hell. For whatever reason, Dad brought me back. I can't think of anyone else who could have, just like that.
no subject
He asked his father to protect her. The person - well, God - that he despised more than anyone else in the universe, probably. His father, who he had defended never speaking to again, who had caused him so much pain for so long, and yet, he'd done it for her. He hadn't asked for his own life to be spared - he had been willing to give in to whatever his father wanted for her.
Chloe isn't even sure what to say to that. ]
Wow. [ She lets out a breath, speechless for a long moment. 'Thank you' isn't exactly going to cover it. What he's done for her... It goes beyond anything she would have ever asked of him, and certainly far beyond anything she would have expected.
Reaching out, she rests her hand gently over his, curling her fingers around him. She can feel her heartbeat pounding in her ears and the enormity of this sets in; the realization of what this means for her, for him, for the both of them. Chloe thought things had changed during her father's trial, but they hadn't. What is happening between them started far earlier than that. ]
Are you okay?
no subject
But, instead, something else comes out.]
I don't know.
[His voice sounds small, distant. His hand turns over so that he can thread his fingers through hers, the action unconscious.]
I loved you even then, didn't I?
[It may be his future, but it's her past, and he's rather certain that she's been here long enough that that point in time would be closer together to when he left than they are now.]
Had I told you? Did I know?
no subject
I don't think either of us knew, really.
[ They didn't know but it had been there. Things with Dan had ended far before Lucifer walked into the picture, and what happened after was just them trying to shove something that was irreparably damaged back together. The more Chloe thought about it, the more she starts to remember things she has almost forgotten since she came to Wonderland; her jealousy towards Ella, when she thought she was sleeping with Lucifer. Dan's knowing comments that somehow translated to subtle support. All of the time they spent together.
Something had changed in the garage that night and it took reliving from a distance to see what she has been missing. ]
I don't think you knew what love was, Lucifer. I think... we both were trying to figure things out. Every time I tried to open up to you, you pushed me away. There's no way I could have known. I think it took me a while to realize how I felt, but what this is between us, I think it started around that time.
