Summary: New Year's Eve Party
The Story:

[ Previously in the month all residents received an invitation to a formal event: a black tie affair to ring in the New Year. The ballroom and adjacent areas are decked out for the party starting at eight o'clock sharp, meticulously planned and executed, glittering décor to match the no doubt glittering attire as music pours into the halls from the dance floor.

Bars flank each side, service for all manner of alcohol unless a minor requests something, and the primary setting stage features an enormous clock for the countdown. ]




[ Where will you be when the clock strikes midnight? ]

'41, actually. [ a beat. ] Or maybe it was '42. I can't recall -- but it was popular around the time I first saw field work.

[ casual, calm, cool. there are people in wonderland, still, with whom peggy would prefer not to discuss the nature of her work. but daisy, alongside the other shield and former shield agents, earn themselves a bit more of a forthrightness in her answers.

the song, incidentally? be careful, it's my heart by bing crosby. ]

Are you certain you're interested in learning?

[It was crazy to think about how long ago that was. At least for Daisy. Her dad wasn't even born yet. Setting down her glass on the table near them, Daisy smiled wide. Excited that Peggy was actually willing to teach her.]

I mean, if you don't mind the possibility that I might step on your toes.

-- That's usually my line.

[ she flashes a mock-coy smile. ]

What makes you so certain I know how to dance at all?

Are you saying you don't know how to dance?

[Because Daisy has a hard time believing that.]

[mucked]

Maybe I can. Maybe I can't. [ ... ] But just now I'm far more interested in what fuels your conviction.

[Rolling her eyes, Daisy reached for her hand so she could lead her to the dance floor.]

Come on.

[mucked]

[ almost petulant, she holds her ground. it's hard to tell whether she's simply making it difficult on daisy, or hoping to outlast the other woman's stubbornness. ]

I meant it: tell me what makes you so certain I can dance, and I'll see if I can't scrounge up a lesson for you.

Because what else besides your work did you have for entertainment back then?

[She's mostly joking.]

Are you looking to get a lesson in dancing or in soaking a punch, Miss Johnson, because I'm quite prepared to arrange for either option.

[ HONESTLY, girl. ]

[Okay. Joke went too far.]

I just figured since you didn't turn me down, you weren't that unsure about your dancing skills.

[mucked]

-- You'll have to listen. [ she relents. ] Do you think you can manage that?

I think I can manage, yeah.

[She likes that they can banter back and forth, even if sometimes Peggy scares the shit out of her.]

One song. [ oh, so now they're talking terms. ] I'll lead -- and do keep in mind what I told you, once, about me being a rubbish teacher.

I'm sure you'll do fine. You helped win the war, in case you needed to be reminded.

[Now can they go actually dance?]

[mucked]

Rather a lot of people helped win the war, actually.

[ but, fine, now they can go dance. although not without a roll of her eyes and a bit of stiffness in her posture as she grabs one of daisy's hands and shifts the other to her shoulder. ]

[Just take the compliment, Peggy.

Smiling in amusement when she places one of her hands on her shoulder, Daisy held onto it gingerly.]

I'm guessing this was probably frowned upon back in the day.

[Two girls dancing like this she means.]

[ a quiet scoff as she takes the lead -- tugging daisy into an angle complimentary to the steps. ]

Good Lord, how else do you think we learned? [ dancing with schoolmates to crackling radio broadcasts -- bumping into dorm beds and laughing all the while. of course, what daisy's driving at is something different than the mere dancing. but peggy isn't prepared to conflate those two concepts once again. ]

[Daisy toes that line of understanding exactly what she means while also totally making it about something more than just dancing. Daisy looks down just to make sure she isn't anywhere near Peggy's feet.]

Am I doing this right? I mean, it seems kind of simple, but...

The steps are always simple. The difficulty arises in the grace with which they are executed.

[ and peggy, despite all her brashness, isn't necessarily accustomed to leading. but after a bit of a faff, she figures out her rhythm and settles a hand at daisy's waist. the other presses gently against daisy's palm, enforcing a kind of classic silhouette upon the pair. ]

Where I step, you step.

[Looking down when Peggy put her hand on her waist, Daisy straightens up in an attempt to look a little less, well, ungraceful.]

Did you take lessons? When you were a kid I mean.

[mucked]

-- Only if you count Friday evenings down at the pub as 'lessons,' [ peggy counters with a bit of cheek.

all in all, daisy isn't doing so bad. these steps are easy ones, and peg hasn't added in any flourish or difficulty. this dance is an indulgence -- more for daisy's sake than her own -- and she won't show off for the sake of showing off. ]

Well you're pretty good.

[Daisy snorts softly at that. Still not quite believing that she didn't have actual lessons at some point.]

You go to the pub a lot?

[mucked]

I used to.

[ and isn't that the truth. once the war hotted up, it wasn't as though her life was bursting with opportunity to go and drink and dance and cavort. the fellas did, yes, and she rolled her eyes and waved her hand while they did so. but that wasn't always an option open to agent peggy carter.

sometimes, even the certifiable badasses have to toe the line of optics. ]

You'd think it would be easier to sneak off the campus at a girl's school than an army installation. And yet. [ her smile ticks. ] Even so -- once the war started, I did a lot less dancing.

Wait. You went to an all girl's school? Was that how it was back then? Girls only and boys only?

[Even if she hadn't dropped out of High School, Daisy doubted they actually talked about that in history classes.]

[ back then. peggy manages not to roll her eyes too hard, thank goodness. ]

Not in every instance, no. But mine was.
