The Story:
Orlais' current ruler, Lacie, has invited anyone of name, fame, and influence to The Winter Palace for three days of extravagant festivities surrounding the peace talks between her and Tillie, whose grasp for the throne has plunged beautiful Orlais into a dreadful civil war. Unbeknownst to both a third player, Elsie, has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to obtain her own share of power over the land.

Get ready for three days of fancy food, fine drink, good music, good entertainment, and just a little bit of murder, maybe? Your character has secured an invitation, and will join the illustrious crowd, become privy to the latest scandals and gossip, and observe as the struggle for Orlais' throne reaches its final chapter.

[ Well, even if Ange still doesn't like that sword even one bit, at least Shepard doesn't seem like a total idiot if she at least knows that much. Then again - most people here probably have figured that out already if they're still alive. If anyone was that dumb, they'd get killed off easily. ]

So do you think the chaos will ensue on the last day or that someone will take their chance now? [ She's not looking for a specific answer, really. She's just trying to feel out whether Shepard knows about a plan for something here to go down or not. ]

[She just shrugs. Even if she knew something, she wouldn't say it. That's at least half the point of knowing anything at all.]

No idea. There are tons of ways someone could take this. You got a good plan, some luck, and some expertise, you could take anything you wanted.

[She raises her eyebrows, like she's also interested if she'll be getting something from this exchange.]

The trick is if they'll do it quietly. And if they can get away with that.

No way. Maybe usually, but even with some people enjoying the festivities for what they are, there ought to be enough people who are on their guard.

[ You know, like Ange. Although that's also just because she's a party pooper and could never fully enjoy a party, so it's much easier to instead try and look for signs of anything suspicious. ]

If anything happens, even if it's small, someone will notice. There's too many eyes.

[Shepard nods understandingly, folding her arms.]

But there's still a ton of other factors. Do they tell somebody? If they do, who do they tell? How does that information get spread? The problem with rumors is that someone can tell you exactly what they want you to hear. It's a lot more controlled than they make it out to be.

[ She sighs. ]

I suppose it'll all depend on the competence of the people who want to start something when it comes down to it. [ And thankfully Ange doesn't have a whole lot of faith in most people's competence, so at least that should help the odds of survival here in her eyes.. ]

[She points a bit Ange's direction.]

Yep, see, there's always that. Always the factor of how good you are at well laid plans.

[Which most people, well, aren't. So it's fine.]

If you're not connected to any major players, you should be fine anyway.

The idea of me having even anything remotely to do with a major player is kind of laughable. [ Granted, her family is loyal to Lacie, and they are nobles, but not exactly some special noble family with a special noble task. Ange isn't even that active in the game herself, so she has figured before she's not too big of a target. ]

How would you describe your own chances of getting through these days without trouble though?

[ Since there sure are a lot more rumors about her flying around. ]

[One side of her mouth tugs into a bit of a smile, which she punctuates with a shrug.]

I dunno. Not sure how many people really care enough to like, try and hire an assassin. Kinda helps that I know how to defend myself, so it's not like you can get me without my personal guard or something. I think I'm a target, but not a smart one to hit.

.. Well, perhaps you'll at least have some excitement then.

[ If you can count almost getting killed as "excitement".. But, you know, Ange's sense of humor is dry enough to just flatly say that. It's not like the actual festivities are actually exciting to her either. ]

[She snickers.]

Yeah, if I'm lucky I'll wake up to a guy with a knife in my chamber and I get to have a swordfight in my nightgown.

[There's some sarcasm in there, but she's also... okay, that would be very exciting. So sue her. She's getting antsy without a fight and she's determined not to start one, so... come try and stab her, fuckers.]

If it stops other people from getting pulled into it, I'm more than happy to fend 'em off.

[ It's a good thing Ange mostly hears the sarcasm in it, since the thought of being excited by a fight is just so unthinkable to her. Why be happy over having to exert effort. She wouldn't ever understand that. ]

I didn't know you were the selfless type.

[ Ange doesn't say it in a way that's super judgey, but.. well, it's obvious she genuinely didn't expect to hear that coming from the Phoenix. ]

[It's something about the thrill, for her. That teetered line between life and death where she can change someone's fate. It's exciting. Some of the only real excitement she gets.]

Well, I'm trained for it. Besides, isn't that the point of a guard? Though I know some don't see it that way.

[She won't go out of her way to hurt someone. This role was just-- a power grab. A favor of a favor to rise an orphan into a swordsman. She's waited a long time to get where she is, and she intends to wait no longer.]

I chose this life. If others didn't, I protect that choice. Simple as that.
