[ His responses are measured, careful. She can appreciate that.

She does have a clear goal for how she wants this night to end. At least for herself. Some good food, good drinks - a night like that just begs to wane with the delectable taste of sweet revenge. The trouble, of course, is who's watching her, who questions the woman behind the mask. Who would stop her before she could release her poison? ]

You have to be very important. Useful. [ Taking a small sip of her drink, there's a hint of something behind her words. ] I can't get enough of this wine. Neither can anyone else. [ She's watching the crowd carefully, noticing patterns in who goes up for another drink, how often. ]

[He doesn't think he envies that; the drinking. He's never been one for it, and he's certainly allowed on the job. It wouldn't matter if he was. He can't drink.]

Does that make it easier? [Spoken like someone too stupid to know, one way or the other. Too stupid is his crowning characteristic, when he can help it. People don't watch their mouths around the morons, the maniacs. They don't care if a crazy person overhears.]

The wine?

[ She enjoys good wine, but she's always very restrained with regards to how much she consumes. So many others let their composure down and don't seem to mind acting a fool. They're the ones she loves to watch, and of course, they make the easiest targets. ]

Always. Somehow they never learn, either. There's a point where you have just enough to drink and you feel wonderful. If you stop right there, right on the cusp of euphoria, you're still in control but you feel more powerful than anyone. It's the perfect place to be. But most of them go well beyond that.

[ She smiles a little to herself. ]

That's when I come in.

[Now that's interesting. It's always a trial in and of itself to repress the instinct to react to that externally in some way, that jag of muscle memory that wants to jerk at his shoulders and raise his eyes. But he pretends, instead, to be acutely interested in the current arrangement of spare tumblers, like someone doing his job would.]

Sometimes people say things they shouldn't? [With the affectation of absolute, innocent neutrality - like this is merely something he's heard about, and not personally witnessed or, in some cases, facilitated for his own gain.]

[ From this angle, she can so perfectly observe everyone, her eyes glancing between him and the crowd every so often. What she wants to do, it's personal. No one hired her this time. No. This is all about creating the most chaos. But there's an art to it, waiting for the right moment, too. ]

Sometimes. [ She smirks a little, memories in that amused expression. ] They're more fun then. And when they grab the wrong drink.

[ A hint of something. ]

[Or when they grab the right one - the one that was spiked specifically for this particular event, infused with the right chemistry to leave them frothing at the mouth. But of course, he doesn't say it.]

You sound like you've seen this all before.
