The Story:
Orlais' current ruler, Lacie, has invited anyone of name, fame, and influence to The Winter Palace for three days of extravagant festivities surrounding the peace talks between her and Tillie, whose grasp for the throne has plunged beautiful Orlais into a dreadful civil war. Unbeknownst to both a third player, Elsie, has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to obtain her own share of power over the land.

[He hopes the mask covers the worst of his discomfort.]
Got it.
[He's not the best actor, but he tries to do the same. Head down, voice even. Focus on the work, like it's all you've ever done. You've got a target painted between the charcoal rings around your eyes, but make like you haven't noticed yet. You're harmless. You're nothing.]
[Jay keeps a firm grip on his end of the barrel, and he follows.]

[Tim has a role he has to play, and he can't afford any further slip-ups. They're going to be missing them right around now.]
It's going to be a long night.

[They're getting back into the mansion proper, back into the clusters of chatting nobles. Nobody's staring, but a brief check over the shoulder confirms that they're not strictly invisible.]
[A clumsy, wavering cry cuts through the crowd, and Jay tenses. Sounds like someone's happy there's more wine on the way.]
How many more barrels, d'you think?
no subject
[If they stagger it out throughout the night, it's liable to allow him more time to gauge whether there's any kernels of truth to what's being said, and scope out for himself whether it's worth stringing along a middle man for something he might be able to glean on his own.]
[It'd be a cruel move, but that's the kind of game it is. it's not nearly as cutthroat as it could be.]
[That's not his specialty.]
no subject
[No more reason to keep out of earshot. Nothing worth a discussion.]
[Still, he risks another question.]
Gonna need another pair of hands with, uh, with anything? Later?
no subject
[There, see? It's a back door, which is more charitable than he technically needs to be, but only an idiot burns all his bridges before knowing for certain that there's a point to it. He might be playing the part, but that doesn't mean he needs to get into character, so to speak.]
I'll look for you.
[...but he's still keeping the ball very firmly on his side of the court.]
no subject
[Why is it so damn hard to learn anything--anything--about what's been going on? Sure, people are trying to save their own skins, sure, some people are out for the money, but Jay's not here for gold. He's not here to get rich, or to decide who lives and who dies, or to settle any old scores. He's not political. He works for Lacie, and he'd like her to stick around, but that's not why he's here.]
[He just wants people to know.]
[Apparently that's enough to blacklist him.]
[...Still, it's not a no, and "not a no" is the best he's gotten all night.]
[So, for now, he'll carry the wine.]
