The Story:
Orlais' current ruler, Lacie, has invited anyone of name, fame, and influence to The Winter Palace for three days of extravagant festivities surrounding the peace talks between her and Tillie, whose grasp for the throne has plunged beautiful Orlais into a dreadful civil war. Unbeknownst to both a third player, Elsie, has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to obtain her own share of power over the land.

Get ready for three days of fancy food, fine drink, good music, good entertainment, and just a little bit of murder, maybe? Your character has secured an invitation, and will join the illustrious crowd, become privy to the latest scandals and gossip, and observe as the struggle for Orlais' throne reaches its final chapter.

[There are indeed books here. Nathaniel hasn't seen quite so many books in one place for some time, and he straightens up to look around them with no small amount of private appreciation.]

[Sunburst sure has, but this place? It's still a decent enough pile to get through. ]

I'd really like to learn more about magic here. But it seems very cloak and dagger. I understand it's something of a taboo?

[Which is, frankly, insane. Magic is magic. It's as natural as breathing. It's silly to subjugate people just because they have it. ]

[Nathaniel doesn't respond very much at all initially. He looks surprised, a little, but it takes him a moment to come up with something intelligent to say.]

That depends on who you ask. And where you are.

So...it's different in different countries? You'd think the mages of your world would just move to where they aren't persecuted, right?

If it was as easy as that, I'm sure they all would. [Nathaniel smiles, very briefly.]

In Tevinter, the mages rule. So they say. But no Fereldan or Orlesian mage would find themselves welcome there.

I don't understand. Why wouldn't they want their fellow mages there? Especially if they know what they're going through elsewhere in your world?

It's not their concern. Tevinter has its own problems, and doesn't play well with others.

That seems...awfully unfair.

[But then, is his world any better? Up until recently, none of the countries would have anything to do with one another, even now the peace between them is tenuous at best. ]

Id there any hope for mages elsewhere?

It does.

[Nathaniel agrees with many things about the Circles and the way mages are always kept on some kind of leash, but since what happened to the Kirkwall chantry... he's had a great deal to consider.

He sighs, unable to give the kind of answer he senses Sunburst would want.]

In the time I come from, something had just happened that would make things worse for the mages, not better.
