"Yeah! But first we have to make the dirt and worms then we can go out and offer some to the fish," Clementine says and then frowns cause she realizes she doesn't know if there are fish out in that big water by the beach.

She goes there sometimes but hrm.

Maggie nods. "Let's get started on that. How ambitious are you feeling, honey? Pudding from scratch or from a mix?"

It breaks her heart a little, seeing Clementine so carefree, but she's going to do everything in her power to make sure the girl enjoys this, for however long it lasts.

"...you know how to make it from scratch? I've never done that before." Clementine looks all kinds of curious, smiling and lifting herself up to sit on the counter as she gathers the stuff they don't need anymore to dump out into the trash can.

"Let's do that."

"Alright, we'll need milk, eggs, cornstarch, sugar, cocoa powder, a dark chocolate bar, butter, and vanilla." Maggie writes down the list as she says each item.

"What made you decide today was a cooking day?" she asks Clementine.

"Got it! You can count on me," she says, hopping off the counter to walk over to the closet. She opens up the doors, pulling out one item after the other until her arms get full. Then she moves them back over to the counter.

"I like cooking. I always cooked with my mom before. I'd help mix up the cookies and put them on pans and dumped in the chocolate chips! When did you learn to cook?"

"I didn't do much cooking until I was grown up. I live alone out in the woods in my grandparents' old farmhouse, though I've got a regular rotation of houseguests. If I didn't learn how to cook, I'd have to hire a cook to live with me. Much better to learn." She grins playfully at Clementine, "Especially since people come back to visit more often if you feed them well."

"Yeah, that would be way better. Then you can make whatever you want, and no one can tell you to eat more veggies," Clementine says with a smile as if in triumph. "Oh, that's true! I don't want to go back somewhere that left me hungry the last time. I wanna go where the food is."

That's the best place.

"Exactly. My strategy seems to be working!" Maggie grins at Clementine. "I'm not saying food alone is enough to win people over, but it's a very good start. We can declare our plates veggie free zones today if you want. You can't live forever without vegetables, but one day won't do any harm."
