[ this Fitz is very much not accustomed to someone moving at vampire speeds. Not here. The scary stuff all lives farther out, in the extreme places he's too scared to go near. He's already close to tears when Freya reaches them, backing away as best as he can. He hasn't had time to build a fort for himself yet. ]

You want to take my Dad. [ how could that not be hurtful??? ]

( fear is hardly surprising to him. no, what throws him is the defense of fitz's father, who he can't recall was ever referred to in such a light, when he even was mentioned.

he cannot comprehend such allegiance to a parent, and not in his friend. it strikes him true, on a deeper, visceral level, just how truly this boy has diverged.

klaus sinks too to his knees.
) Well he wasn't very nice to you or your mother, was he?

[ he shakes his head violently at that. The stories Klaus heard mostly arrived from an adult with decades of scarring and perspective to Express his pain. That level of understanding has no place here at his core, where a terrified little boy never stopped wanting his father. ]

He treats mum and me really good. Considering I'm stupid, and she's a girl... [ they'd never be able to survive on their own if it was ever just the two of them. He's heard mum and dad yell about it a lot. ]

( clearly that is the case: this is truly just a child. klaus was never quite able to completely stamp out the rage he'd feel when his father insulted or beat him. that righteousness seems absent, or rather buried, in this boy, as it was at times in him. and the justifications: those still exist in him, too. that he's weak, worthless, an abomination.

klaus studies him silently, and then reaches out a gentle hand to rest on his arm.
) You're a very smart boy, Leopold. And as for your mother being a girl... That's not a kind or true thing to imply of the woman who loves you, is it?

It happens!

[He flinches openly as Klaus moves to touch him, and only relaxes after the hand has been in contact for a long moment without causing pain.

It's happening, but he doesn't trust it.]

I. probably said the wrong word. [If they think he's insulting mum, then it's his fault. All of it is his fault. His head would drop there if the lady hadn't spoken up just then. He knows her. He's pretty sure he knows what she wants to do here.]

The evidence says you don't want me to have a father. It just got fixed and you want it to break again.
