If you could be any you, who would you be? [OPEN]

Who: EVERYBODY!
Where: TV Wonderland
When: June 29th - July 1st
Rating: anything from Teletubbies to Game of Thrones
Summary:
As announced this will be a catch-all post for shorter scenes, commercials, or things you simply don't want to make an entry for.
  1. If you want to involve your character in anything and everything, leave a blank comment with them and see what others drag them into! Other characters will respond and set a random scene for the two (or three or seven) of you.

  2. If you only have one particular thing in mind then set it up in a comment and wait for replies of anybody who wants to play along with the idea and stumble into that scene in their next response (or mark the thread CLOSED if you already have participants in mind)!
The Story:
Over the course of the event, everyone will be forced to act out various stereotypical roles and common tropes. The setting immediately around them will change randomly into settings from cliche popular media, complete with mediocre side-character NPCs who will never break character. It will become clear very quickly that they are expected to act out a particular role in the scene. They might be expected to be a tough cop, or a handsome sexy doctor, or someone’s evil twin come back from the dead, or any number of terrible tropes – and these tropes do not necessarily have anything to do with who the character is or what they do for a living. They could be the most innocent person and suddenly find themselves forced into the role of a hardened criminal.

After the past few events, Martha has been dreading this next one. It's difficult to predict what's coming simply based on the cryptic messages left by Alice or the Cheshire Cat or whoever else, so on Friday morning she's on edge. It's hard not to be when she doesn't know what's going to pop up next.

She doesn't leave her room for a bit, and everything seems quiet on her mobile, which only makes her more uneasy.

Eventually, stir-craziness pushes her out of her room. Hiding from whatever the mansion has planned next isn't going to do her any good, and so she sets about taking a look around and trying to suss things out.

So it happens unexpectedly -- she's walking down a hallway when its shifts and distorts. It's still a hallway, but the floor is linoleum, the wall to her right has a bulletin board with a few missing persons sheets tacked up on it, and she's...

She's dressed like a police officer. It's the modern British uniform, at least -- she hasn't got a bobby on, thank god -- but she does have a nightstick at her waist and she also has no idea where she is.

A moment later, a burly man walks up to her, looking self-important, as he peers down at her. "Officer Jones, I told you that I wanted your report on my desk this morning!"

Evelyn caught on quickly. It's a good thing she's dealt with events for so long, the transitions almost don't phase her any more (then again, perhaps that's not exactly a blessing). The only thing that throws her for a distinct loop is jumping to a frightfully modern time period. If there's one thing she dislikes, it's being out of her element.

Said element looks stark and uninviting, the trousers she's wearing are hardly ideal for freedom of movement, and the cravat she's wearing in place of a tie feels like a noose. All Evie has managed to gather thus far is that this is some manner of police station, and the new century's constabulary doesn't feel especially adept at their profession.

"Printers aren't working, sir," Evelyn interjects from her little corner as soon as she realises that the woman across the room is someone she knows. Best not to make too many waves when they haven't the slightest clue what the force behind this event is.

...That, and she's only parroting something she heard from one of the tired-looking men around her.

"Should be up and running by this afternoon," she volunteers further, standing and moving to Martha's side.

Martha's generally on top of things. She isn't much of a procrastinator, and she works hard. So the very idea of not doing something when she had been expected to is a situation she's not all that used to. Which is why it's more or less a godsend when someone else speaks up, giving her the perfect excuse.

When Evelyn walks over, Martha sends her a grateful smile. Much better at improvisation than she is, it seems, though it's a little more difficult when you're put on the spot. Martha turns back to the man and nods. "So sorry. I can try to email to you as well, if you'd like."

The man frowns and shakes his head. "Hate trying to read that tiny font on the computer screen. Get it to me this afternoon," he says sternly.

When he turns away, someone else runs up to the pair with a folder in hand. From his youthful face and enthusiastic attitude, Martha's guess is that he's a bit younger and new in the ranks. "We have a new case you two can focus on for now!" he tells them. "I've got all the details right here."

Martha smiles and takes the folder from him, waiting for him to skitter off before turning to Evelyn. "So, this is... something, isn't it?"

"Something is certainly a way of putting it," Evie replies, folding her arms across her chest and leaning over to look at the folder. It's not all that interesting at first glance, so she turns her attention back to Martha.

"...this is a police station, isn't it? Judging by the gratuitous number of sidearms and the shouting and the general-" Evelyn waves her hand. "-tense atmosphere, I'm assuming the worst."

The real question is: why are they here?
selfrespecting: (honest)

[personal profile] selfrespecting 2013-07-03 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, of course, Evelyn wouldn't know. Police stations must have looked completely different in her time. Martha wonders why it is that this illusion (that's what it has to be, right?) is based off of her point in time instead of Evelyn's. She has to admit, she's curious about how this all would have looked back in the 1930's...

"It is, yeah. Honestly, I was just walking down a hall in the mansion and then suddenly, this." Martha peers around, but all of the people around them are unfamiliar, and they're simply carrying on with their tasks like this is normal. She gets the feeling they aren't other Wonderland residents.

"This can't be real, can it? Just... very vivid." She's pondering over that when another officer rushes down the hall, glaring at them to get out of the way.

Martha feels like they're being eyed from all sides, in fact. It's as if they're expecting them to do something or go somewhere or--

Well, be what they've been cast as, she supposes. "For now, we might be best off going along with it and seeing what happens," she decides as she wanders down the hall to get a better look at the station. It just keeps on going, so it doesn't look like it will be that easy to break away from this.

The fact that everyone's watching is more than discomfiting. Evelyn nods in agreement and trails along beside her, feeling somewhat overwhelmed by the whirring, beeping technology. It's one thing to be exposed to computers in Wonderland, but another thing entirely to get smacked in the face with them all at once, expected to know precisely how they work.

"I'm all for that," she murmurs. "someone wanted me to make a spreadsheet, whatever that is, so I'll take an excuse to get away from my desk."

Speaking of which, the opportunity is right there in front of her.

"May I see that folder he gave you?"
selfrespecting: (down to business)

[personal profile] selfrespecting 2013-07-07 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"Spreadsheets are horrific," Martha says, her only word of explanation on that topic. The fact is that if she's going to be stuck in a situation where people think she's some kind of police officer, she would at least like to do something more interesting than sit in front of the computer writing reports and graphing out spreadsheets.

So the folder is definitely the most interesting aspect of this. At Evelyn's request, Martha cuts to the side, moving to an open desk where she sets the folder down and opens it up.

As would be expected, there are sheets of paper in there, different reports and witness testimonies. It looks like they're dealing not with a homicide, but some kind of breaking and entering that resulted in a count of battery. The one responsible is on the run now, and they'e supposed to track him down to his last known location.

"This isn't exactly my area of expertise," she admits, though Evelyn already knows that, of course.

"Well, you're not the only one," Evelyn frowns and lifts another page, checking the opposite side. Charges of assault, previous misdemeanours...terms that should probably mean something to her, but then, she doesn't have procedural cop shows in her time. Understanding their situation would come much easier if she knew the lingo.

"...This is more along the lines of the work my husband is familiar with," she admits with some dismay, wishing that Rick could translate what looks like a mess of gobbledegook.

"So...are we...supposed to find this person? This-" Evelyn checks the name. "...Martin Favreau?"
selfrespecting: (amused)

[personal profile] selfrespecting 2013-07-15 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Martha can at least keep up with the lingo well enough to follow the report, though there are some things that are even behind her. The bottom line seems to be that this suspect has been brought in on minor charges before, and this latest crime he's suspected for is more or less the last straw. He won't be getting off so easy if he broke into someone's house and attacked them.

"I would imagine so." She reaches out and picks up a post-it from the file, handing it over to Evelyn. "That's his home address, so I suspect we'll start there."

Which means that there must be a car out in the car park that they're meant to use. Martha doesn't even know what city they're meant to be in. Somewhere in America, no doubt, but that hardly narrows it down.

There is one thing she's curious about, though, something that causes her to glance over at Evelyn with a half smile. "You're married?"
nascensibility: it's not like we don't have flashlights (I'll send you the news)

[personal profile] nascensibility 2013-07-17 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"...remember that disreputable guide I mentioned when I told you about my first adventure?"

Evelyn glances over the little yellow slip of paper, a half-smile of her own worming its way onto her face.

"My tactless brother lifted the puzzle box off of him in a seedy bar. We later found Rick wallowing in the Cairo Prison for brawling. He was very..."

Uncultured. Rude. Filthy. A complete scoundrel.

"...well, initially, he lacked a great deal of charm, but he made up for it."
selfrespecting: (aww yeah)

[personal profile] selfrespecting 2013-07-17 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
So that's how it is, then. Martha can relate, seeing how she was more or less swept off her feet by an alien -- a very human-looking alien, but an alien all the same. A ruins guide with a penchant for brawling doesn't seem so bad in comparison.

Which is probably why Evelyn's married while Martha's broken off an engagement, but those are just details, aren't they?

"I suppose he must have," she replies, clearly pleased to hear it. Sometimes the most unexpected people end up becoming close to you, and that appears to be what happened to Evelyn. If they've been married for some time now, then it looks like he was the real thing, so to speak.

A voice breaks in from the other side of the room. "You two plan to keep tittering on like that, or are you gonna get some bloody work done?"

Martha straightens, glaring in the general direction of the voice before she gathers up the file into her arms and shrugs at Evelyn. "Well, you heard him."

Evelyn doesn't entirely know how they became so enamoured with each other, but she doesn't like to question it. They get along splendidly and that's all there is to it. Not everyone can have such a happy married life.

Evelyn frowns and is suddenly reminded of the distance between them and their supposed 'target.' She gives Martha a wary look.

"...you can drive an automobile, can't you?"

Because she's almost a century behind.
selfrespecting: (walking away)

[personal profile] selfrespecting 2013-07-29 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
The question takes Martha by surprise, but her brain catches up with her and she remembers that not that many people knew how to operate a car in Evelyn's time. Martha smiles and nods, not saying anything more about it than that. It's always quaint when two time periods clash in that way, but she doesn't want to make Evelyn feel bad for not knowing.

She digs her hand into the pocket of her uniform jacket and finds a pair of keys there. How convenient.

"Let's find our way out of this place. I imagine there's a car park in the back." With a nod to their so-called coworkers, Martha takes off down the halls, navigating their way to the exit, which spits them out onto a busy city street.

Martha can only imagine that Evelyn wasn't used to this level of hustle and bustle, and so she glances back at her. "Stay close to me, yeah?"

Oh, Evelyn can drive. Not well, but she can drive. It's certainly more than can be said for some people -- she just prefers to be chauffeured around, and Rick likes automobiles almost as much as her brother, so she never has to worry if she wants to go anywhere.

That, and she doesn't want to begin thinking about how different vehicles are in this time, because they're already dashedly difficult in her own.

"Roger that," she chimes, trailing along after Martha, grateful she has someone who can navigate this madness with relative ease. "D'you think we'll have to arrest this fellow? I do hope things don't turn violent."

Said with such a prim tone of voice that she sounds like a schoolmarm.

The car park's bound to be around the back of the building, and so Martha heads off in search of it, relieved that Evelyn isn't bothered by having to take up the rear. The fact is that Martha's far more familiar with this setting, and so it's simple logic that she leads the way.

Although that remark is something that Martha can't help laughing at. She tries to make it brief, though. "Sorry, I... it's just. This is based off of a telly program. About two coppers teaming up and solving crimes and such. We'll definitely have to arrest him, and it's probably going to turn violent too."

She doesn't know if it's the best idea to be so blunt, but she also wants Evelyn to be as prepared for this as possible. Even if it's all make-believe, it might still get a bit stressful.

They reach the car park and Martha grabs for the set of keys, sorting through it. Now they just need to work out which car is the right one.

"Telly, as in...television?" she hazards a guess with some trepidation, not wanting to assume anything when it comes to newfangled terms and slang. 'Coppers' is obviously, if a little silly.

Regarding their jaunt into the ghetto, well, Evelyn isn't entirely a fan of it, but when things turn sour...

...let's just say that she's shot at evil people, but they were far away. It was to cover her husband. It wasn't to harm anyone, just keep them back. Going into a mission like this, half-cocked? Not entirely her style.

"As for violence, I've seen a fair bit."

[personal profile] selfrespecting 2013-08-16 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Martha nods to the first question. Right, even if Evelyn is from England the same as she is, Martha's got to remember that she wouldn't be all that familiar with certain slang.

Maybe it might be a good idea to see if she can get a hold of some DVDs so that she can show Evelyn what these programs are like. If she's interested, anyway. It's something they can discuss once this is all over and done with.

Martha presses the button on the automatic key and a car beeps in response. "Well, that was easy," she says with a sigh of relief as she walks over to the car in question, circling around to open up the passenger door for Evelyn.

"And I would imagine you have, considering what you've been through. Still, let's hope this goes as smoothly as it can."
nascensibility: it's not like we don't have flashlights (this is where you fell)

[personal profile] nascensibility 2013-08-20 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
She gives a little start when the car beeps, surprised that it was emitting a sound different from the ones she's familiar with. Evelyn composes herself and nods as Martha opens the door, slipping into the vehicle.

"...oohh, automobiles have certainly gotten ridiculous," she mumbles, folding her hands in her lap primly and flinching as the door shuts behind her.

"And as long as we don't have to kill anyone!" Evelyn shouts through the window as Martha comes back around, taking the driver's side. Given the moment to mull over the new technology, Evelyn decides that it has far too many superfluous knobs and dials, all of them begging to be pushed or turned, something her brother would indulge in were he here.

"...have you ever had to kill someone before?"
selfrespecting: (uncertainty)

[personal profile] selfrespecting 2013-08-22 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Ridiculous is probably a good word for it, but honestly, there are a lot of modern updates to cars that Martha would rather not be without. The aircon and radio are both must-haves, as far as she's concerned, and now she can show Evelyn the light when it comes to that.

It's not as if Martha has any intention to kill anyone, but she wonders if this event is going to force her hand. She's hoping not, but it isn't as if that would be outside of Wonderland's scope.

As she settles into the driver's seat, Martha considers Evelyn's question. Almost immediately, she wants to answer "no," but she quickly realizes that's not actually the case...

"Well, sort of." She puts the key into the ignition, but doesn't actually start the car up just yet. She'd rather explain herself in regards to this subject while they're still parked. "Remember how I told you I went back in time to 1930's New York? While I was there, the Doctor and I encountered these... well, they'd once been human, but they'd been mutated into these pig men." Which sounds completely mad, she knows that, but she's being completely truthful.

"After being altered, their minds were gone. They were essentially nothing more than mindless minions, but stakes were high and we were being attacked by them, and so I..." Martha trails off. A lot of people might not even count that, but she certainly does, and she isn't about to forget it.

[personal profile] nascensibility 2013-09-07 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
In Evelyn's not-so-humble opinion, that still sounds like a bit of killing, even if it's in self-defence. She can't condemn it, but she can condone homicide, either. Rick has more experience in the matter, more assuredness, the ability to decide in a split-second if the man in front of him is threat enough to pull the trigger and rid the world of his ilk.

Then again, she's never really considered how many innocents her husband has probably killed as well. People just doing their job. Fighting on the wrong side in the heat of battle, trapped in a war and drafted into the military.

God, she hopes her son never has to see the draft.

"You did what you had to do," Evelyn insists firmly, sitting with her hands in her lap, not quite realising that she's supposed to buckle herself in properly (what are automobile safety standards in 1935, anyways?).

"That's all there is to it."

After being asked, Martha's fully prepared for some kind of judgment, but that's not what Evelyn offers up at all. She's already been told by others not to beat herself up overly much about it, but she's never going to forget it. She'd ended something's life, after all.

She glances over at Evelyn and smiles ruefully, nodding her head. "I suppose so, yeah." It's years past at this point, so she really shouldn't be dwelling, but when asked a question like that, she can hardly help herself. "Thank you."

She turns the keys in the ignition and the car rumbles to life, at which point Martha pulls on her own seatbelt. "Make sure you buckle up, yeah?" She demonstrates for Evelyn, remembering that they likely don't have them in her time.

Opening up the file they've brought along with them, Martha studies the map before nodding and then putting the car into reverse, backing it up until she can turn herself around and speed out of the car park. "Would you mind being my navigator?"

No thanks necessary. Evelyn understands because in return, Martha has forgiven her for nearly destroying the world. Tit for tat, and all that. She knows what it's like.

"Buckle u- Oh!"

She fumbles for a moment with the strap before securing it across herself in snapping it into place, feeling much more restricted and wondering if it's altogether essential to the driving experience. Imagining that modern automobiles reach greater speeds, she might as well count the strap as a blessing.

"Not at all, let me...see..."

Taking the folder, Evelyn chews her lip and frowns over the diagrams and maps for a moment before waving her hand arbitrarily at the windshield.

"Erm. We need to...follow the main street, ah...it's Sampson Street...for about four blocks. Take a left onto Westminster."

All things considered, Evelyn's taking to this rather well. The updated setting, the strange car, the seatbelt, and the map that's probably far different from the ones she's used to seeing.

Even if this is all make-believe, it still gives Martha an idea of how adaptable Evelyn is. Wonderland must have something to do with that, as it more or less teaches everyone how to accept any surprises thrown their way.

Martha nods and starts driving as Evelyn's instructed her, keeping an eye out on the streets, though she doesn't see much out of the ordinary.

"... This is surreal, isn't it," she says after a stretch of silence. "I don't think I'll ever be able to predict what Wonderland comes up with next."

Wonderland has done a bang-up job of making Evelyn the sort of person who has to deal with unfamiliar things and changing circumstances. If someone from the future says that the wheeled unit is a car, it's a car. There's no sense fighting about it when Evelyn has no point of reference to compare.

"Surreal sounds about right," Evie prods at her sheet of paper. "But predicting things is too much trouble - for us, I mean. There's absolutely no telling what a sentient house will do to you if you start poking around."

...by no means does Evelyn not 'poke around,' though - she's far too curious an individual for that.

"The only thing I can really dislike about this place is what it does to people."
selfrespecting: (concerned)

[personal profile] selfrespecting 2013-10-01 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Even if they are given warnings about the events before they come, usually the message is far too muddled to actually sort it out. Even when Martha thinks she knows what's coming, it turns out to be something completely different.

She makes the turns as Evelyn instructed her, and it seems like it won't be a long drive after all. That makes sense, though -- in telly programs, the car trip is always rather short unless there's some meaningful conversation taking place during it.

What Evelyn says gives Martha pause, though. "Other than that, you don't mind it here? Is that what you mean?" It's something Martha has to evaluate for herself because she dislikes Wonderland on principle for the fact that it takes people away from their home and holds them prisoner.

If it needs them for something, wouldn't it make more sense to ask? But if it truly is the building itself that's responsible, then it may have no way to ask.
