Summary: Mikan got scratched and she's infected! But she's fine. Everything's fine. ~~THERE IS NO WAR IN BA SING SE~~
The Story:

Aug 7

It had been such a small scratch she didn't even realize she had it at first. But she knew the seriousness of infections, even in this bizarre turn of events, and so she'd taken great precautions in cleaning, disinfecting, and treating the scratch. There was no virus a Super High School Level Nurse couldn't defeat!

So with that little matter taken care of, she'll be going to everyone she can find, asking how she can help. No matter what you're doing or who you're with, she'll be gently asking. "Excuse me...?"

Aug 8

Why was the scratch getting worse? She'd cleaned it over, and over, and over, and over again. But she felt fine! Really! She was just getting a fever from working so hard! Maybe it's her supplies... yes, she just needs better medicinal supplies.

This day you might find her going through all the supplies - even food and weaponry - just to make sure nothing has been misplaced. She'll be so into her thorough search she won't even notice your there - until you make yourself be noticed.

Aug 9

She can't get up. She can't move. None of this is making any sense. But at least beforehand, she had surrounded herself with heavy crate boxes inside of her assigned tent. Maybe this way no one will find her, or hurt her. She just needs to wait this out, and then everything will be back to normal.

Despite her struggle to hide herself, there's a low groan coming from inside of her tent.

Aug 10

That low groan you heard yesterday? It's a smidgen louder now. There's some shuffling going inside. Care to take a peek?

She's... so... hungry...

As she trips, Kaneki moves quickly forward, though he's not nearly fast enough to catch her.

"A-are you okay?! I didn't mean to startle you."

"No! I mean, yes, I mean, I'm fine!"

In a sudden defensive gesture, she held out both of her hands to make sure he stayed far enough away - unfortunately, that allowed him to see the obvious infection on her arm.

Kaneki zeros in on the infection and he reaches to grab her wrist.

"That doesn't look fine. What happened?"

He doesn't want to assume the worst case scenario--maybe it's just tetanus or something. That would be better, right?

For a moment she freezes up. Doesn't speak a word, doesn't move a muscle. Her eyes slowly look into his, and there's a moment where they look like a void.

"I am Mikan Tsumiki, Super High School Level Nurse." She says, her voice slightly shaky. "There is nothing I can't cure. It's going to go away. I treated it properly."

Kaneki's hand hovers in the air before he makes contact with her. He wasn't expecting her reaction to be so...ominous?

Yeah, ominous is a good word for the vibe he's getting from her.

"...Even if you treated it properly, it might not be cured."

"It has to be!" She snaps, but then she turns away, clutching her arm, her anger turning into obvious fear. "... I cleaned it and disinfected it over and over and over, it has to be fine... I'm the best nurse in the world, I must have treated it right, it has to go away."

"...Is it from one of those things?" If it were anything else, it's unlikely she'd be so upset and...afraid of all of this.

This time she didn't reply to him. Instead she just whimpers, clinging to her arm. Given from the way she's shaking, tears are going to come hard and come quick.

Kaneki winces, sensing the oncoming torrent. He didn't mean to make her cry, but he can completely understand why she would.

He raises both hands placatingly, but doesn't try to touch her.

"Look...it's going to be okay. They might be able to treat it, right? We've got some pretty well-trained people."

Granted, she just said she should be able to treat anything, but maybe zombie-virus-treatments just aren't a thing in her world and they are in someone else's.

The moment he said "they", however, more panic set in. She suddenly grabbed his arms, and the tears came anyway. "Y-You can't tell them! Please! I'll do anything, just don't tell anyone! I'm b-begging you!"

Kaneki stares at Mikan, trying to wrap his mind around this situation. She is seriously going to turn into a zombie and she's clearly terrified--at least in part because of what the others might do to her if they find out. He knows he's had that exact expression on his face before, tears and all.

"B-but what happens if no one knows and...you start to..."

Eat people.

"I-I can cure it! I'll find a way! I'll cut off my skin if I have to... my arm if I have to!" She then began to fall to her knees, still clinging onto him and crying pitifully. "Please... please... I'll do anything you want..."

Kaneki's hands kind of flutter above her shoulders because wow she is a high school student and this is awkward. Then he takes a breath and crouches down in front of her so they're on the same eye level.

"Take a minute to breathe. Let's talk about this."

It might take than a minute or so. When he kneels down, she lets him go, but begins sobbing into her empty hands. Throughout her muffled crying, she can be heard saying "I'll do anything" over and over again, as if Kanei would somehow keep this secret if she obeyed him.

"You know how dangerous it is if no one knows, right?"

"B-B-But you know." She looks up, tears still falling. "And you can help me..."

Kaneki swallows. He can absolutely understand why she doesn't want anyone to know.

"...If I don't tell anyone, will you promise to come to me if things start to change?"

Her eyes widen, and then she nods rapidly, with new, happy tears streaming down her face. Kaneki may get the impression this is someone who is rather prone to crying easily.

"Y-Yeeeees! I promise! I absolutely promise!"

This is a terrible idea, no matter how much she cries. He's sure that she knows it as well as he does, or she would if she could be calm. He can't blame her for not being, though.

He puts a hand on her shoulder.

"With any luck, the event will be over before things get to that point."

"Y-Y-Yes!" She chokes out, rapidly nodding in agreement. "These things always end, no matter what! So... so it'll be okay! Everything ends!"

"Just...don't let it get too bad. If things start to change, come find me. I'll help you."

If that means having to kill her or out her...well, he'll figure out what to do when that time comes.
