Summary: The Pines Twins are technically turning thirteen, and are having a giant birthday party to celebrate. EVERYONE COME EAT CAKE.
The Story:

The Jolly Roger has been decked out with enough streamers to give its previous owner a small heart attack, but at least the streamers are done up in red, black, and white to go with the pirate theme and not something colorful and obscene like Mabel might design if left to her own devices. Most of the tables for snacks ( including oranges to ward off scurvy) have been set up on the beach to give the guests plenty of room to mingle around without overcrowding the ship, and at various places around the party areas are large barrels full of fake plastic pirate weapons, eyepatches, hats, and other pirate accessories so everyone can get into the spirit of things.

The deck of the Jolly Roger has been turned into a sort of makeshift dance floor for people willing to get up and get their groove on for the entertainment of everyone on the beach, which is entirely Mabel's idea, because who wouldn't want to have a dance party on the deck of a pirate ship.

For the most part, it's a free-for-all, since the twins can't possibly organize that many people, but they're here, there, and everywhere, making sure everyone's having a good time and basking in all the birthday excitement.

[it's not even that she's upset- well, she is a little. nobody likes being told that their childhood heroes are actually big jerks, but it's different when you're not seeing it yourself. and henry's world has a lot of... variants on fairy tales. it makes her wonder if the ones she knows are just watered down and easily digestible to ignore how dark they might be.

wow that line of thinking makes her sound like dipper.

she listens to his explanation, lowering her arms and glancing away as she considers that.] I guess I can kinda see why someone would do that, even if it's no excuse to become an evil jerk.

[Henry's about to comment, when he sees something out of the corner of his eye. Reaching out as he squats down, his fingers brush a box and then shimmy by shimmy, does find an actual treasure chest. It's really small, it couldn't hold much, but it's here and Henry pulls it out so that she can see it, brushing off dust.]

Mabel, I think we just found treasure...

[There's a lock on it, but he's already looking for ways to bust it off.]

[That distracts her enough from her crisis about Peter Pan that the matter is utterly forgotten, as if it had never happened. As he starts looking for something to bust the lock off, Mabel pulls a pin out of her hair and grabs the lock.] I got this. Just gotta jiggle it a little bit annnnd... Presto! [the lock comes off in her hand and she grins triumphantly.] Gotta love a multi-purpose fashion accessory.

[henrydaniel]

[Henry can't help but grin.] Awesome.

[Sitting in the small space, he crosses his legs and slowly opens the lid so that Mabel can see, and his eyes widen.]

Whoa...[And he pulls out a pretty big ring with a sapphire in the middle of the band, then a gold bracelet with emeralds.

They just found actual treasure. And knowing his luck, something about either or both of the items is magical.]

[she's her grunkle stan's niece all right. she beams at his compliment and proceeds, with no consideration for what might be enchanted or cursed begins to put things on.] Your friend had really good taste. I'd expect nothing less from a pirate.

You should definitely keep most of this. [What's he going to do with jewelry? Except he pulls out a ring that looks kind of like the one Hook wears.]

The only thing I want is this one.

[She's pretty much laden with various articles of jewelry by the time he tells her she can have most of it, so it's for the best. she'd hate to put them back. they smell like her now.

Jingling as she moves to get closer to see Henry's choice, she blinks a bit, puzzled.]

It's pretty, but why that one? [tell me your secrets, beautiful friend.]

[henrydaniel]

[It's definitely not for him to wear, so. After a pause for a few seconds, he looks up at her.]

The guy who owns this ship when he's here, Hook - Killian - he's...important to me. He taught me how to sail. He was there for me when my dad died. And this is kind of like one of the rings he wears in his hand.

[Gaudy as it is. Bless, Hook.]

[Mabel gives him a tiny smile, reaching over to touch his shoulder.] It's nice that you have something to remember him by. That's why I keep scrapbooks- I don't wanna forget anything.

Do you have different scrapbooks for different things? [He's curious because his mom has photo albums, but no actual scrapbooks, so he's never really seen one before.]

Sure I do! [she ticks off on her fingers.] I've got a scrapbook for events that weren't so lame I didn't remember to take pictures, general Wonderland memories, and one for friends.

[and also one for ~Wonderland romances~ but, uh, he doesn't need to know about that one.]

[henrydaniel]

[lol omg Mabel you are so cute.

ANYWAY.

Henry smiles as she explains her books, then shrugs a little.]

Maybe we should take a picture of us and our treasure so you can remember this, too?

[She pulls a camera out of the inside of her sweater. Let's be real, she probably sews pockets on the insides of those things because girl's skirts are impractical for carrying things.]

One step ahead of you! [She moves in closer to him as she holds the camera up to take a picture of the two of them in front of the treasure. It's necessary for the picture for them to be close, okay. nothing to see here.] Say something pirate-y!

[henrydaniel]

[Somehow it's just easier to laugh right now than it has been in a couple days, and he leans in close to her, their temples touching as he says the first thing that comes to his head.]

Ahoy, matey!

[powerofmabel]

[The flash goes off and Mabel pulls away, hugging the camera to her chest.] Perfect scrapbookortunity. [she sighs wistfully] This is the best birthday I've ever had.

[henrydaniel]

Really?

[He smiles a little at her, and though it's small, it's genuine.]

Hopefully, we can make it even better next year.
