Movie Night!

Who: Anyone who wants to come watch Dinosaur movies
Where: The Movie Theater, Fourth Floor
When: Friday April 8th, 8pm
Rating: PG-13 for Raptors
Summary: Jurassic Park Movie Night
The Story:

As soon as people start showing up in the theater, a gentle song begins playing in the background. They will see the obvious screen on the back wall, but what's more, the seating is surrounded by prehistoric foliage. And in that foliage, stands a hand full of herbivorous dinosaurs. They seem to be grazing on the vegetation without a care in the world. If someone reaches out to touch, the holograms will destabilize as their hand passes right through them only to form back together once the disruption is gone. Even the vegetation seems to be a holographic projection along with the imitated grass floor and night sky. In the four corners of the room, set into the ceiling, are small domes that flicker ever so slightly as they cast and regulate the projections. The occasional T-Rex roar will echo in the background of the music, making the small herd of Parasaurolophus look up with a fright, then lower their heads back down.

The lights dim and the movie begins, the noise surrounding the holograms quiets as to not interrupt from the movies, only to return during the short breaks between films.

If you stray over to the refreshments table, thick brush and tall grass will conceal a deadly pair of raptors lurking. Appropriately themed snacks are set up on the table, including a few sweet treats courtesy of Darcy (including jello shots).

Occasionally, an unwary snacker will come to a fright as one or both of said hunters will pop out of the grass with a sharp, chittering cry. Lucky for the unfortunate victim, the jumpscare is all there is to worry about. The tricky little raptors will slink back down into the grass and lie in wait for their next victim. Don't spill your popcorn, its just an illusion.

You're welcome.

...you know they're not real, right? Well, I - I mean, they were, but they're - they're extinct now.

[Frisk remembers that much from the history books. They glance at the "human children" on the screen and wrinkle their nose. No striped shirts. How's anyone supposed to know they're kids?]

[Wow. Just wow. Looking at them together now, the cat really is just perfect for her, isn't he?

...It would be wrong to try and pick her up like a misbehaving kitten herself, wouldn't it? But it's awfully tempting to try.]

Awww and I thought we were such good friends! I think of you every time something attacks my ankles.

[Well the last part is true.]

WHAT?! [her outburst is met with a lot of shushing and she lowers her voice to a panicked whisper.] What on Earth could possibly be efficient enough to eliminate them?

[...] Was it a different civilization? [she presses a hand to her mouth.] ...Was our gem colony not the first time other lifeforms have set foot on Earth?
determinedest: (* And with that power...)

[personal profile] determinedest 2016-04-10 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Uhh...

[Frisk startles a little at that stricken declaration, unsure as to how they should proceed with that. Gem colonies sounds an awful lot like something from her world.]

People think it was, um, an asteroid, I think? They died a long time ago, before there were any, any humans.

[Or monsters? They're not sure about that, actually. They might have to ask Alphys about that one.]

I imagine that much happen to you a lot. [BECAUSE YOU'RE HORRIBLE. AND ALSO HIDEOUSLY TALL.

he doesn't even deserve this much rage. he just somehow caught her on a day when she was full of it and now it's all she has when she thinks of him.]
What do you want?

More lately but often enough.

[With the recent influx of ankle-assaulting cats it's become a lot more common. And has nothing to do with his size or personality thank you.]

I just wanted to see how you were doing. [And to annoy her because it's fun. Sticking his bottom lip out in an exaggerated pout he blinks down at her.] Aren't you happy to see me?

[Oh, but there is a real raptor here, Peridot.

One that watches her scold her cat, hidden among the dino cupcakes.

Waiting for the perfect time to strike.

Now! It leaps from the snack table, larger than the holograms, but just as sudden. And gets all up in Peridot's grill.

River has been jumping at all the scares, but staring blankly at the screen the rest of the time. Like watching a wall that sometimes has horrible teeth gnashing at you. She may be entranced by the movie, but all the same...

"Dinosaurs looked nothing like this. No creature's skin conforms to its skeleton that way. Like a cow with no fat deposits, flaps of skin, or soft tissue. And they had colorful feathers."

Always a spoilsport.

Before

[personal profile] ivehadbetter 2016-04-10 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
[Isabela had shown up at Dorian and Brennan's insistence and really, what else was there to do? She had to admit she was a little curious about the whole thing. She's sampled some of the food and had a glass of wine but it's the colorful little cups of what she's told are "jello shots" that catch her eye. She might have had a few already. And she may have piled a plate with some...

She finds Robyn sitting right before the movie begins and takes a seat next to her.

Hello, Kitten. What do you think so far?

[personal profile] mypartnerintime 2016-04-10 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[Just as Ellie jumps and swears at the raptor, a bright flash fills the area near the snack bar. Yup, there's Max, lurking behind a table and taking pictures of peoples' reactions.

People that she thinks won't get pissed, anyway.

She looks at the picture as it develops, laughing quietly to herself.]

Max tries to find whoever is in charge, and eventually approaches Billy nervously. She's in her usual jeans and hoodie, though today her t-shirt has a raptor print with the words Clever Girl printed underneath.

"Hey... uhh, you set this up, right?"
mypartnerintime: (Thanks for the morning grope)

During the movie

[personal profile] mypartnerintime 2016-04-10 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Max notices Wash sitting near the back and decides that he'd make good company during the movie- half because she wants a secluded place as well, and half because she wants quiet too, and he seems like the type who wouldn't get all noisy.

She settles down nearby, and after a moment holds out some popcorn to him.

[personal profile] mypartnerintime 2016-04-10 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
[With a small pop and a flash, Max manages to catch a picture of Steve throwing his popcorn into the hologram. Oh, that is awesome. She watches the instant film develop for a moment, before she realizes that he's an awfully big guy with military bearing, and is also securely under the adult category.

Not to mention there's now another adult casually teasing popcorn-thrower. Max turns quickly, hoping neither of them noticed her, and decides to spend the rest of the night trying to avoid them both. This is all one of the downsides of taking pictures without permission - always worrying about how people will react.

Fortunately, this picture is kind of worth it.]

The scene of Elizabeth with the dinosaur is really so charismatic: curious girl in vintage clothing reaches out to touch a nervous herbivore. Max, in one corner of the room, manages to pull up her Polarid camera and snap a picture in time, the brief flash of light filling the area.

With one practiced motion she takes the picture out of the camera and shakes it lightly before putting it away into her bag.

Oh hey, it's River, and this time neither of them are emotional wrecks! That's always something Frisk looks for in their new-friend interactions.

"How-how do you know that?" they ask curiously. Does River come from a world where there are still dinosaurs? That would be kind of scary, but maybe they're friendly sorts, like how monsters can look intimidating but aren't, really, and are just people like everyone else.
brainleak: (i cant hear a thing for)

[personal profile] brainleak 2016-04-10 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"Dinosaurs died over 65 million years ago." So no, she doesn't still have dinosaurs in her world. "There used to be paleontologists who studied their remains. On Earth That Was it must have been a reasonable job to have, but after she emptied..."

Not so reasonable anymore. But there were a few eccentrics who clung to that kind of life, who brought fossils with them to space. There are places you can go and see horrible creatures that used to be on Earth That Was in ancient, ancient times. And the illustrations that came along with them always had feathers.

"Haven't found new fossils since."
determinedest: (* Seems talking won't do any more good.)

[personal profile] determinedest 2016-04-10 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"Earth's...gone in your world?" Frisk says quietly. That statement stands out to them in particular, casting the rest of River's words in sort of a shade of melancholy.

The thought is strangely sad. It's not a world they know, or can even imagine, so they can't say anything about it. But it feels strange to be speaking to someone who's from a place so drastically different from their own that their home doesn't even exist in the planetary sense.

"Oh."
brainleak: (taking me over)

[personal profile] brainleak 2016-04-10 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"There were too many of us. Earth That Was couldn't sustain our numbers. Ran out of resources. Went to a different galaxy, terraformed the planets and the moons. Made new Earths so people could have room to live. Took decades."

It's all very objective to River. She doesn't feel any particular attachment to Earth That Was, had never seen it in her lifetime. It's just ancient history.

"That was a long time ago. Before I was born. Ancient times."
determinedest: (* She'll find another kid.)

[personal profile] determinedest 2016-04-10 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh," says Frisk again, their brow knitting. It still sounds awfully sad that their home would essentially just...disintegrate into nothing, like a monster decomposing into dust.

"Then how do you know about the dinosaurs?" they ask, curious. "If they were from that long ago?"
brainleak: (i wouldnt do anything)

[personal profile] brainleak 2016-04-10 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"There are museums. Still fossils on display. Little pictures with descriptions. Almost like a freak show."

She shrugs. "It's all very pointless. Earth history doesn't matter anymore."
determinedest: (* This doesn't strike you as accurate.)

[personal profile] determinedest 2016-04-10 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Frisk looks at the screen, the dinosaurs that look startlingly real but they know can't be.

"That's kind of sad," they say softly. "We never really get to know more about them? The Earth dies before we do?"
brainleak: (we reached the moon falls icy cauldron)

[personal profile] brainleak 2016-04-11 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
"Is it sad that the human species is adaptive? Individually fragile, but as a whole, resilient. We're like cockroaches."

Those survived, too.
determinedest: (* You give the Lost Soul a big smile.)

[personal profile] determinedest 2016-04-11 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
"I guess." That's a better way of looking at it, and Frisk smiles a little. "We're kind of...really strong, aren't we?"

Persistent. Enduring.

Those are some words for it. Another word would be determined.

"Really, really determined." Their grin widens as they say it with the air of a private joke. River's been in their mind, so maybe that significance isn't lost on her.

[ The heroes of Ferelden, everyone, hanging on to each other's arms and staring open-mouthed at a showing of Jurassic Park. She may not be literally hanging off the edge of her seat like he is, but she's no less captivated, eyes bright and reflecting the scenes on the wall across from them. ]

Are they- Dammit, I can't- [ She grumbles to herself, shifting where she's half-seated, half-about to spring forward and knock people out of the way. She's like a small, irate puppy in that way. Instead, she just shifts, agitated, craning her neck to look. Eventually, she finds a tiny window where she can scoot her chair slightly closer to peek in between people's shoulders and sighs with relief.

Until there are raptors, or tiny, evil lizards, and she stares avidly right along with him. ]

No, they wouldn't do that to children. [ Not in fiction, where children aren't in regular danger, like in the real world. People can control this, make it less horrible. ] See, they're safe.

[ For now........ ]

[ Robyn had also shown up at Dorian and Brennan's insistence, though she hasn't ventured into the alcohol yet. After her disastrous drinking episode in December, she's been hesitant to have much more than a sip of anything. The food has been interesting, at the very least, and the Warden has a small plate of it when Isabela approaches. ]

I think it's amazing. [ She grins, bright and pleased, then glances around at everything with awe plain in her expression. ] I've never seen anything like it, not even since I've been here in Wonderland. The- dinosaurs? Even if they're only illusions, it's incredible to be... so close. They seem so real.

[ Being a 'ranger,' she's particularly enthralled with animals and creatures of all varieties. Maybe there'll even be prehistoric spiders!! ]

What about you, Isabela?
