Movie Night!

Who: Anyone who wants to come watch Dinosaur movies
Where: The Movie Theater, Fourth Floor
When: Friday April 8th, 8pm
Rating: PG-13 for Raptors
Summary: Jurassic Park Movie Night
The Story:

As soon as people start showing up in the theater, a gentle song begins playing in the background. They will see the obvious screen on the back wall, but what's more, the seating is surrounded by prehistoric foliage. And in that foliage, stands a hand full of herbivorous dinosaurs. They seem to be grazing on the vegetation without a care in the world. If someone reaches out to touch, the holograms will destabilize as their hand passes right through them only to form back together once the disruption is gone. Even the vegetation seems to be a holographic projection along with the imitated grass floor and night sky. In the four corners of the room, set into the ceiling, are small domes that flicker ever so slightly as they cast and regulate the projections. The occasional T-Rex roar will echo in the background of the music, making the small herd of Parasaurolophus look up with a fright, then lower their heads back down.

The lights dim and the movie begins, the noise surrounding the holograms quiets as to not interrupt from the movies, only to return during the short breaks between films.

If you stray over to the refreshments table, thick brush and tall grass will conceal a deadly pair of raptors lurking. Appropriately themed snacks are set up on the table, including a few sweet treats courtesy of Darcy (including jello shots).

Occasionally, an unwary snacker will come to a fright as one or both of said hunters will pop out of the grass with a sharp, chittering cry. Lucky for the unfortunate victim, the jumpscare is all there is to worry about. The tricky little raptors will slink back down into the grass and lie in wait for their next victim. Don't spill your popcorn, its just an illusion.

You're welcome.

Is that what they are? [she looks back in wonder as the raptors begin chasing the children through the kitchen.] Look at them. They are perfect apex predators. Their communicating in their own language and utilizing strategy. [she squeals in delight] Those human children don't stand a chance against them.

[...Peridot, you're not supposed to be rooting for the raptors.]
determinedest: (* She'll find another kid.)

[personal profile] determinedest 2016-04-10 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
...you know they're not real, right? Well, I - I mean, they were, but they're - they're extinct now.

[Frisk remembers that much from the history books. They glance at the "human children" on the screen and wrinkle their nose. No striped shirts. How's anyone supposed to know they're kids?]
slapfight: (△ you're very small)

[personal profile] slapfight 2016-04-10 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
WHAT?! [her outburst is met with a lot of shushing and she lowers her voice to a panicked whisper.] What on Earth could possibly be efficient enough to eliminate them?

[...] Was it a different civilization? [she presses a hand to her mouth.] ...Was our gem colony not the first time other lifeforms have set foot on Earth?
determinedest: (* And with that power...)

[personal profile] determinedest 2016-04-10 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Uhh...

[Frisk startles a little at that stricken declaration, unsure as to how they should proceed with that. Gem colonies sounds an awful lot like something from her world.]

People think it was, um, an asteroid, I think? They died a long time ago, before there were any, any humans.

[Or monsters? They're not sure about that, actually. They might have to ask Alphys about that one.]
slapfight: (△ worse..... or better?)

[personal profile] slapfight 2016-04-12 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh. [she blinks steadily, seeming to accept this explanation with little clarification, as she turns back to the film. that's so... anticlimactic.] ...That would do it. They can be highly destructive if you can't simply obliterate them before they make impact.
determinedest: (* I'll climb this mountain and...)

[personal profile] determinedest 2016-04-12 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess people still like to imagine what they'd look like.

[Which is...kind of scary. Not the scary they're really used to, of the thorny vines or the blue-eyed skeletons staring them down, but it's still a little disconcerting to watch people, even virtual people, die by dinosaur. It doesn't seem like a very nice way to go.]

...scary.
slapfight: (△i didn't say anything about your head)

[personal profile] slapfight 2016-04-17 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Are humans really that appetizing?

[Peridot asks after a horrifying moment of watching someone getting eaten.] Or are the humans just starving them and this is clearly about them getting what they deserve? What creature eats that much? Besides Amethyst.
determinedest: (* She'll find another kid.)

[personal profile] determinedest 2016-04-18 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's just kind of a fear thing.

[Crap, and Frisk knows very little about psychology or anything like that.]

Humans are...really resilient, so it's scary to us when there's something that can just eat us like that, I guess?
slapfight: (△ DON'T SAY DELICIOUS.)

[personal profile] slapfight 2016-04-21 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
[she leans forward a bit.] Humans actually enjoy being frightened for entertainment?

determinedest: (* And with that power...)

[personal profile] determinedest 2016-04-21 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Some are.

[Frisk is pretty sure they're not about to count themselves as among those. They're not enjoying the movie as much as they are the company and conversation.]

There's whole genres of horror movies out there. Some of them are...are really scary.
slapfight: (△ yes vermin lord.)

[personal profile] slapfight 2016-04-21 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Fascinating. I wonder if it's a conditioning process. Expose themselves to fictional fear in order to make real fear less debilitating.

[and if there's whole genres of that, then...

she gulps.]
There must be some humans who fear nothing.

determinedest: (* She'll find another kid.)

[personal profile] determinedest 2016-04-21 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I think everyone's scared of something.

[Honestly, Frisk can understand some of the thrill of doing something you're not supposed to do, even if the times they've done it were saturated with guilt. But someone who's scared of nothing? Come on, everyone's got to be scared of something, right?

...right?]

Especially humans.
slapfight: (△ whhhhhy's his head so big???)

[personal profile] slapfight 2016-04-22 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
There are an unfortunate number of terrifying things on Earth, but most of them humans just accept as... normal.

[then again, it's all relative.]
determinedest: (* She'll find another kid.)

[personal profile] determinedest 2016-04-22 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[Huh. That's actually...]

That's true.

[Frisk says it with the tone of someone who hasn't considered such a thing before. Humans can be kind of terrifying too, can't they?]

I guess it's because we've been around for so long. That just seems normal to us?
slapfight: (△ and then the rats came for them)

[personal profile] slapfight 2016-04-28 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I suppose. If the Crystal Gems' reactions are any indication, there's a great deal about Homeworld that Earth would find frightening too.

[LIKE THE FACT THAT THEY ALMOST TRIED TO MAKE A COLONY OUT OF THE PLANET UNDER EVERYONE'S NOSES.]

But for me that's just efficiency and the mark of a great pioneering race.
determinedest: (* And with that power...)

[personal profile] determinedest 2016-04-28 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
[Crystal gems...ah, right! From the fallen stars! They remember those - Amethyst and Pearl.]

I guess. But if we got hit with an asteroid too, I don't think we'd have lasted any longer than the dinosaurs.
slapfight: (△ i like puppies with no bones)

[personal profile] slapfight 2016-04-28 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Earth really needs better planetary shielding. [she makes a thoughtful noise.] Something to work on when I get back... After the Cluster, of course.
determinedest: (* It wasn't for a very happy reason.)

[personal profile] determinedest 2016-04-28 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
You protect the Earth from things like that?

[Frisk's mouth drops open a little in admiration. That's...wow. That's like, important.]
slapfight: (△ this has nothing to do with jelly!)

[personal profile] slapfight 2016-05-02 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
[she immediately blushes indigo and turns her head away.] Well... The Crystal Gems protect Earth from threats, and I'm one of them now, and it's for the best that I am. I'm sure they haven't even considered some of the billions of things that can happen to a planet besides the... piddly things they fight.

[they didn't even know about the cluster. losers.]
determinedest: (* They walk not the middle road.)

[personal profile] determinedest 2016-05-02 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
That's really admirable!

[That makes Peridot like...a superhero, or something! Frisk grins, delighted.]

You're like a hero!
slapfight: (△ make you wish i was never born)

[personal profile] slapfight 2016-05-05 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[TURNING EVEN... MORE PURPLE.]

Hhhuh? What?

[...but wait. that's a good thing. that's borderline praise. PRAISE IS GOOD. and she has felt so underappreciated lately. no one understands her tortured rebel gem soul.] I mean... Of course, I am. It's just the sort of gem I am.
determinedest: (* You told the Lost Soul a bad pun)

[personal profile] determinedest 2016-05-05 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[That's kind of adorable. In like, the best way possible.

Oh.

Oh no.

They know what's coming next, they can't even stop it, the option just creeps up on them and they...

* Flirt.]

That's really cool. And like...kinda cute?
slapfight: (△ i dunno... but don't eat the muffins.)

[personal profile] slapfight 2016-05-06 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
[peridot completely misses the social cue because she's not exceptionally bright about that, and only manages to look utterly indignant.]

What? No, it's not. I'm not cute.
determinedest: (* You give the Lost Soul a big smile.)

[personal profile] determinedest 2016-05-06 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean...you kind of are? But like, in a cool way! In a really, really cool way.

[Their cheeks redden as they backpedal and try not to offend her. Chara would be losing their mind right now.]
slapfight: (△ i dunno... but don't eat the muffins.)

[personal profile] slapfight 2016-05-06 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[cool. she's cool. she knows that word.]

O-oh. Well... Yes.

[she blinks steadily behind her visor, lifting a hand to her wiry green hair to scratch her head while she comprehends this, the fading purple-blue tinge to her cheeks returning with a vengeance.] ....Thank you. For noticing.

[WHAT DOES ONE SAY IN THIS SITUATION.]
