What: Mettaton’s birthday!

Rating: W for WILD PARTY (Ok no more like PG-13 just in case)
Summary: Mettaton has a birthday party that involves creating an entire theater for his first ever Wonderland performance!

The Story:

On every wall in Wonderland (and quite a few statues and pillars) citizens will find a poster bearing the beautiful visage of resident robotic star, Mettaton! Emblazoned across the top of it are the letters M-T-T in sparkling gold inks, surrounded by an oddly rectangular robot, with one wheel sticking out the bottom. Anyone who knows will recognize that the arms look the same as Mettaton’s regular arms and could hazard a guess that the rectangle is supposed to be him?

Below that, there is a picture of Mettaton posing with a mic stand with a singular spotlight shining down on him. Below THAT, there are words:

HELLO BEAUTIES AND GENTLEBEAUTIES OF WONDERLAND! IT’S YOUR RESIDENT HEARTTHROB AND CELEBRITY DELIGHT’S BIRTHDAY TODAY! THIS NIGHT ONLY, COME TO ROOM 50 ON THE FIRST FLOOR FOR AN INAUGURAL PERFORMANCE BY YOURS TRULY!

COME MARVEL AT WONDERLAND’S NEW THEATER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS! AFTER MY PERFORMANCE AT 7PM ANY AND ALL ARE WELCOME TO BRING THEIR DREAMS TO THE STAGE!

NO PRESENTS REQUIRED; ONLY YOUR PRESENCE! THOUGH THEY CERTAINLY WON’T BE TURNED DOWN!

[His head pops up immediately at Frisk's voice, pulling himself to his full height as he grins broadly.]

Thank you, darling! You know me; I only ever give my best.

[He gives Frisk a fond look.]

I'm glad you enjoyed it. We all have needed a good time for awhile now.

Sorry it's been a...weird couple of days. I guess I just needed a little time to unwind.

[Frisk ducks their head awkwardly for a moment, then quickly pull the small gift-wrapped box out from behind their back and offer it to him with a tremulous smile.]

Happy birthday.

[Inside is the clumsily-wrapped box is a beginner's attempt at knitting a scarf - a completely superfluous accessory for a ghost-inside-a-robot like Mettaton - having spent most of the day knitting it after requesting the requisite amount of soft pink yarn from the closet (they have little doubt that pink in his favorite color, given how much of it he wears on his body).]

[He pats their head as he smiles. Wow, Frisk is short. Or maybe he's just really, really tall with these beautiful legs of his.]

I'm glad you could find some here. My concerts are for forgetting your troubles and dancing the night away!

[He stops patting their head and waits as Frisk pulls out his present.]

Darling, you shouldn't have!

[But he's already grabbing the box and opening it eagerly. When he pulls the scarf out he places the box on the floor, holding the scarf up to the light and eyeing it appreciatively.]

Oh Frisk, I love it! I can tell you put a lot of hard work into this.

[He wraps it around his neck immediately, popping his hip to the side as he places a hand on the side of his face with the other resting on his waist.]

[Maybe the references to the voice in their head will be lost on him, but it doesn't matter. He looks delighted by the git and even puts it on immediately. Frisk can't resist the urge to break into a wide grin.]

Ohhh, plus 10 defense? That's pretty good for a scarf!

[He shakes his head at their pun. Goodness, they sound like Sans.]

[Frisk scuffs the ground with their feet, feeling uncharacteristically shyer than usual.]

I just made a scarf. You're the one who made it stunning!

Making anything is always an amazing endeavor! You took time out of your day to make something you thought I would enjoy, and I deeply appreciate it.

[He throws one end of the scarf over his shoulder, gently feeling the yarn in his hands.]

I can already think of all the outfits I can pair this with.

That's...I'm glad you like it. I've been learning to knit and, and I'm still learning, so it's not - it's not all the way perfect yet. But I hope it's all right.

[Though, in all honesty - it's Mettaton. He could make a paper grocery bag look stunning with a few adjustments.]

They laugh, shaking their head. It's not about them today. Today is about Mettaton.]

The same day as Chara's, we decided!

[Missed it by five days, it seems. And back home as well.]

You two are certainly two peas in a pod. Though what did you decide? Their birthday or yours?

[Does Chara not know their own birthday? It's very thoughtful of Frisk to share theirs. Mettaton knows he wouldn't share his for anything.]

They didn't remember theirs, so we settled on mine. Sans and Alphys and Undyne and Dipper and Mabel and everyone threw this big party, and they didn't even tell me. Chara was in on it and everything.

[That part of the memory, at least, is a fond one.]

It was a really wonderful surprise.

[What a genuine good story to hear! It's one of the few ones he's heard about Wonderland where everything seemed to go well.]

Perfection is as perfection does! And honestly, I'm surprised it took this long for a theater to be built here! This mansion of ours is supposed to be able to fulfill our whims, and yet no one in all the years it has been around thought to make one?

[That's a genuine sentiment, too. The lighting and the cavernous feeling of the place is, quite frankly, spectacular to witness. Mettaton well and truly pulled out all the stops.]

I don't know how to play any instruments!

[The words come out in a startled squeak, flattered as they are by the invitation, "favorite co-star" is a bit overwhelming. His favorite? But...they're just them.]

Well, we're all trapped here, right? That gives you plenty of time to learn a new instrument!

[He can certainly wait. They've got all the time in the world.]

Do you...could you teach me?

[They almost wish they could snatch the question back as soon as they ask it - why would he give them anything after the way they've treated him? But - but he knows music, doesn't he? He can certainly sing, and instrumentation is like...singing but through your fingers, right? Totally.]

Depends on the instrument, but if worst comes to worse and you choose an instrument I don't know how to play, we can always learn it together! It's good to have a large repertoire of instruments you can play.

[It's not really fair to talk about learning something together when he could theoretically just download it into his brain and have the rest of him catch up with what his body can do, but he would consider learning the old fashioned way if it would help Frisk.]

[They planned on dismissing the question right away, so they're unprepared for him to actually answer, and even more unprepared to find themselves answering back, eagerly:]

Have you ever played something like a...a ukulele, or a guitar?

I have some experience with the guitar! Not so much with the ukulele, though I should think it has some of the same principles!

[A ukulele, huh? That seems like something Frisk would be interested in.]

Y-yeah. I've kind of wanted to learn to play, a little bit. Sans knows trombone and Undyne knows piano, so...I wanna learn something with strings.

[Their hands might be too small, but they'd still like to try.]

Sounds like you were already planning your own band! Well, I certainly won't stand in the way of progress. I'll do what I can to help you learn ukulele and if my knowledge runs out, we'll whisk away to the library and see what it has.
