Summary: Mettaton has a birthday party that involves creating an entire theater for his first ever Wonderland performance!

The Story:

On every wall in Wonderland (and quite a few statues and pillars) citizens will find a poster bearing the beautiful visage of resident robotic star, Mettaton! Emblazoned across the top of it are the letters M-T-T in sparkling gold inks, surrounded by an oddly rectangular robot, with one wheel sticking out the bottom. Anyone who knows will recognize that the arms look the same as Mettaton’s regular arms and could hazard a guess that the rectangle is supposed to be him?

Below that, there is a picture of Mettaton posing with a mic stand with a singular spotlight shining down on him. Below THAT, there are words:

HELLO BEAUTIES AND GENTLEBEAUTIES OF WONDERLAND! IT’S YOUR RESIDENT HEARTTHROB AND CELEBRITY DELIGHT’S BIRTHDAY TODAY! THIS NIGHT ONLY, COME TO ROOM 50 ON THE FIRST FLOOR FOR AN INAUGURAL PERFORMANCE BY YOURS TRULY!

COME MARVEL AT WONDERLAND’S NEW THEATER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS! AFTER MY PERFORMANCE AT 7PM ANY AND ALL ARE WELCOME TO BRING THEIR DREAMS TO THE STAGE!

NO PRESENTS REQUIRED; ONLY YOUR PRESENCE! THOUGH THEY CERTAINLY WON’T BE TURNED DOWN!

[Mettaton wasn’t lying when he said that there was an entire theater in these previously empty, rather small rooms. Nor was he lying about performing. He’s up on this giant wooden stage that was definitely not there before, in a room that is three times larger than previously expected, with the stagelights beaming down as he faces the audience.]

Good evening everyone. Thank you for coming to my first ever Wonderlandian performance! This is as much for you as it is for me, since I have been DYING to give you all a good time! Now I could go on for ages about my fans and what you all mean to me; but let’s be real here! You’re here for music and dance, and I’m not going to keep that from you all! So! Let’s get this show rolling!

[He turns on his heel, facing away from the audience. The lights go dim, leaving only Mettaton’s silhouette framed. Music begins to pump out from the Box Mettaton shaped speakers to the sides of the stage and he whips around to start singing the songs from his set.]

[Dancing is a great stress reliever. Just ask anyone. It's how they pulled themselves out of that postmortem funk of theirs after their first Wonderland death, and if Mettaton's show is anything like his battle was, they think they'll love whatever he has planned.

And they do.

They spend most of their time dancing - the loud music makes it hard to discuss anything extremely serious, much to their mild relief. Their thoughts are still a turbid swirl over the events of the past few days, the stress of everything having piled up, and mindless fun is exactly what they're looking for.]

When they bump into Frisk, (well, not really bump so much as the human's shoulder moves a little through their body) they are hit with two distinct memories of the child- one of the underground and one of Genosha. They stare at them for a moment. The music is too loud to talk over and they can't pretend that the fondness they felt as a human for Frisk was gone and their normal solution- to phase out of the situation as quickly as possible- is not an option at their cousin's birthday performance.

So Napstablook smiles a little, awkwardly, and start to sway to the rhythm, watching for the child's reaction.

Oh. It's...well, they hadn't thought they'd be running into them again after their rather tumultuous introduction. But they remember their Genoshan persona - they'd gotten along pretty well, hadn't they?

Gotten along a lot better than they're likely to do here, ha-ha.

Hah.

Frisk smiles at them shyly, and tries for a little wave. They aren't leaving. Are they...all right with this, maybe? Or just waiting for things to all go wrong?

::Asgore is not entirely certain that these songs are quite in his personal wheelhouse, but nevertheless, it is a chance to see TV's Metaton perform, and so he sits and watches from somewhere near the back, so as to not block other patrons' view of the television star.::

[He comes off the stage covered in glitter and confetti, his hair perfectly in place despite dancing for about an hour straight. Gotta love metal hair gel and how well it sticks! He adjusts his outfit carefully and for a moment if you’re watching him, you might get a glimpse of a long, slender crack in his “abdomen”, where the metal heart design is. He covers it up quickly, regardless, and turns his attention down to his boots, where he starts pulling them up carefully. Without looking up, he speaks.]

I hope you enjoyed the performance, darling! There’s plenty more where that comes from in the future!

[They really need to make a list of everyone's birthdays here, so they won't feel bad for missing any. Their gift was a little hasty, and it definitely took several tries from the closet before they got what they wanted.

Frisk keeps it behind their back at the moment as they sidle up to Mettaton post-performance.]

[His head pops up immediately at Frisk's voice, pulling himself to his full height as he grins broadly.]

Thank you, darling! You know me; I only ever give my best.

[He gives Frisk a fond look.]

I'm glad you enjoyed it. We all have needed a good time for awhile now.

Sorry it's been a...weird couple of days. I guess I just needed a little time to unwind.

[Frisk ducks their head awkwardly for a moment, then quickly pull the small gift-wrapped box out from behind their back and offer it to him with a tremulous smile.]

Happy birthday.

[Inside is the clumsily-wrapped box is a beginner's attempt at knitting a scarf - a completely superfluous accessory for a ghost-inside-a-robot like Mettaton - having spent most of the day knitting it after requesting the requisite amount of soft pink yarn from the closet (they have little doubt that pink in his favorite color, given how much of it he wears on his body).]

[Being an audience is easy. ACT. * Check. That's it.

Or... no, don't ACT. It's not a battle. It's not a fight. They watch his dance steps like it's an attack pattern to memorize, they watch for weak spots, and it's nothing more than muscle memory. What comes to them on pure automatic instinct.

They're... they've sort of been running on autopilot. Not paying attention in the way they should be.

Show's over. They shake their head. Drag forth their present, as ridiculous as it looks: a life-size cardboard cutout of Mettaton, a single shiny bow stuck onto it.]

Happy... what is this, the day you were born or the day you were built?

[Mettaton stands up and gives Chara an odd look.]

The day I was built is the day I was born.

[Why would they ask that... so specifically. That's probably something to think about for another day, because then his eyes land on the present Chara brought and his eyes sparkle.]

DARLING!! Is this really for me??? I love it!!!

[He picks it up, his eyes continuing to shine as he takes it in]

Did you make this? Did the closets make this??? It's perfect!!

[Alphys isn't really good at being at these things. Mettaton is a huge personality, and usually flocks to- and creates- these sorts of incredible shows where she always ends up feeling out of place. But it's his birthday. She can't not be here, especially for what it means to him. What it means to both of them, really.

So she hangs back during the show, keeping her gift box close, and approaches him when he's done.]

Y-You do always, uhm, know how to put on a show!

[Mettaton jumps to attention quickly, giving Alphys a wide, perfect grin.]

Ah, there she is! The woman of the hour! I'm glad you made it Alphys. If you hadn't, you'd owe me big time.

[His cheerful tone and mischievous manner should be enough to imply that he's only joking. Mostly.]

By the Buffet Tables | OTA

[There are long buffet tables to the left and right side of the stage, and there is so much food and drink that you can’t help but wonder how Mettaton got all of this in here supposedly without help. There is a part of the table that is sectioned off with a sign that says “Monster/Ghost food”, though why it is sectioned off isn’t apparent until you pass the normal looking food and come across some plates that have… transparent food? It’s certainly an odd sight, all things considered. If you attempt to eat the food in this section that looks normal, you’ll notice that it doesn’t feel like anything hit your stomach at all. +1 HP! If you attempt to eat the transparent food, it goes right through your hands. No luck in picking that up.

Mettaton stands off to the side, a proud smirk on his face as he takes in all the party goers.]

I’m sure you’ll find something here to your liking. I made sure to cater to everyone’s tastes. Well. Mostly everyone. I have quite a few young fans, so alcohol is just a no go here. Gotta keep things family-friendly, you know!

[They float up behind him, too quiet to be noticed at first. They're holding a plain white box, tied up with a single, hot pink ribbon. It's a little scuffed on one corner, evidence of Napstablook forgetting that it couldn't phase through walls with them.]

...you can't possibly think i can eat all of this myself...

[They've never seen this much ghost food at once. most of it is things they know they like, but there were a few new foods there too. Napstablook has never tried ghost pineapple-upside-down cake. They flash Mettaton a tiny smile]

[He's grinning, happy to see his cousin so happy.]

Sans | OTA | after the show

Obviously Sans is where the food is.

He's wandering around the area with the monster food and investigating the ghost food, because ghost food is basically a Grade A prank. Transparent, intangible food? It's a prank waiting to happen. He'd love to know how to get his hands on some, literally. Maybe some ghost hotdogs so that some of his customers get a fun surprise.

He looks exhausted and a bit distant, but for all intents and purposes, he seems to be enjoying himself.

There's also what appears to be a very small gift box tucked into his hoodie pocket.

Mettaton spies Sans from further down the buffet table, and chuckles as he watches Sans try to handle the ghost food. The only people here who could eat it are Napstablook and himself; but Sans doesn't need to know about the latter.

He walks over to the skeleton, observing him eating the food until finally he cuts in. "Now that we have a stage here, are you thinking of bringing back your stand up routine?"

While it may not have been as big of a hit as Mettaton's own performances, he remembers that Sans drew in a relatively good-sized crowd at his hotel.

::Free food is, well, a siren's call to Asgore. He is at the table, carefully loading up on sandwiches, real sandwiches, not the ghostly sort. And also those little cocktail wieners. And fruit. And a napkin. To wipe his snout off when he's done.::

[Mettaton sees Asgore at the buffet and walks up, pleased with how much his party is a success.]

[Finally, a moment when Mettaton doesn't seem to be alone or in the middle of a real high-energy performance. The music wasn't exactly Max's type, but she has to admit Mettaton pulled it off perfectly, and with the appropriate gusto.

She approaches with some paper delicately held in one hand, though for now all she does is greet the birthday celebrant.]

Hi Mettaton! Happy birthday! [She has a bright smile, though the crowd and the noise make her a little uncomfortable.]

Fantastic, Max took the bait!!

[When he sees Max, his eyes light up instantly.]

Max!! It's good to see you here! I hope Genosha wasn't too hard on you.

[His grin turns a little mischievous at the mention of the event. He hopes she isn't too upset that he didn't stick around to try and convince her it was all fake.]
