The Story:

Ah, Hogsmeade.

They say it's the Vegas of the wizarding world. Or they would, if wizards knew anything about Vegas. Or maybe they'd say it because they don't know anything about Vegas. It doesn't really matter.

What's important is that Hogsmeade is only a hop, skip and jump away from Hogwarts (Hogsmeade, Hogwarts? Coincidence? Wake up, America!), and is host to a number of exciting prospects for people of all ages, provided you're Year 3 or older. Perhaps you're a professor searching for a stiff drink at the Hog's Head Inn to wipe away the stress of the week's classes? Or maybe you're a hapless student with fresh eyes for the little hamlet, eager to try your first Butterbeer at the Three Broomsticks?

The village has something for everyone, with all the assorted businesses a thriving witch-and-wizard town could need: grocers, an apothecary, magical item mechanics, clothiers, sporting goods, bookstores, and the Wizarding Wireless Network headquarters.

[Nate shrugs, perhaps almost too laissez-faire for Rafe's tastes, but he isn't going to rise to such obvious bait when they're still...whatever they are. It's a liminal space made slightly more complicated by how much he enjoys Rafe's company and remains largely in the dark about what's expected of either of them.

It's just weird. Ish.]

I mean, if I thought you had a really quick date before this, then I'd have to ask why it was so quick? Were they boring? Too young? Or did you accidentally get unwanted company and you're just covering for it to keep that whole-

[Nate waves a hand, gesturing to all of Rafe and sucking in a sharp breath through his teeth.]

You know.

[ Nate tries so hard to maintain his levels of "I don't care" that it's just as satisfying as if he flew into some jealous rage. More so, Rafe thinks to himself as he leans back in his seat, arms folded across his chest as he continues to watch Nate babble on.

True, they're both of them in a weird limbo — they're something more than nothing but like either of them have tried to talk about it so far past a few close moments stolen in between Quidditch practices and rooftop scrambles. ]

No, sorry, I don't know. Keep what whole... [ Rafe mimics the gesture, indicating himself and a clear expectation for Nate to explain himself further. ] You're going to have to be a little clearer what you mean.

[They're something more than nothing and that something is about as unpredictable and ominous as a boggart locked in a wardrobe. Rafe knows, he just likes seeing Nate flounder a little bit - and flounder he does, struggling to come up with an apt metaphor before settling on:]

The "cool and collected" thing? Where you look like you're simultaneously bored and murderous?

[And smug, that one for certain, particularly now with the way that Rafe is clearly reveling in Nate's straw-grasping. Rafe doesn't intimidate Nate because they've known each other for so long, but the looks that Adler can level would make any first-year shit their robes. Nate takes a sip of his Butterbeer, rubbing foam from his lip.]

I can come up with more synonyms but I feel like that would get old really quickly.

I don't know, I think it could stay entertaining quite a while longer.

[ It could just as easily mean Nate's continued fluster or that bit of foam he could just as easily wipe away before Nate handles it on his own. Rafe's gaze drifts back up from where it was so distracted as he debates just how much more Nate deserves to dangle.

Eh. He can be merciful. And so before Nate spools out any more rope to hang himself with, he exhales slow and quiet before rolling his shoulders. ]

Some idiot Gryffindor thought it'd be fun to annoy me. [ That murderous quality Nate mentioned earlier shows itself now before a slow inhale, a reminder about control and the various reasons why he didn't hex the blighter's face off. ] Fifth year. Don't worry, he's still breathing.

Oh, good.

[Nate replies with mock relief, because he can imagine a less public scenario wherein Rafe might have actually made the offending Gryffindor start vomiting slugs. Still by no means reassuring information in the grand scheme of things, because nosy students will always pass information on in the form of rumors, but Nate's suffered worse.]

I'm sure your innate charm- [a term which here means particular knack for appearing unwelcoming] -is what had him packing his conversational bags so soon.

Trust me, I tried. [ Rafe rolls his eyes, remembering the pain in the arse with a grimace. ] It was as if he was specifically out to be obnoxious.

[ Seriously, he has spent an inordinate time honing that knack to a fine edge and the great majority of the student body knows better than to try their luck testing it. Apparently this other jerkoff just hadn't gotten the memo. Rude, honestly. ]

Least he's gone now.

[ And you're here goes unsaid but Rafe smiles before leaning his elbows on the table to poke at his own butterbeer. ]

Miss me?

[Nate isn't always quick on the uptake, but he knows subtext with Rafe well enough to tell when his humor is warm and friendly. (Hard for most people to determine, he thinks, because Rafe Adler does not come across as an exceptionally genial person.) He doesn't wait for an answer because they don't talk about this kind of crap, anyway.

Nate continues over his butterbeer.]

Winter break's gonna come up soon. You going home for it?

[ They don't talk about this crap and Rafe's only answer is to dip his finger in butterbeer foam and flick it in Nate's direction. Long association should let Nate figure the translation — yes with an addendum of idiot — with relative ease.

The idea of winter break is an exciting one but he grimaces at the h-word. ]

Not bloody likely. First year I've got the choice, I'll stick to the dungeons. [ It isn't worth the breath to ask if Nate will be staying in the castle; he always has, and unless something drastic has happened he will again this year. The last year and Rafe is itching for it to be over and getting somewhere away from his family. ] You'll be stuck with me.

Oh no, that sounds terrible,

[Nate intones with a sarcasm that would make fruit wither on the vine.]

Fewer students around and limited professorial contact.

[Since his very first year Nate has spent holidays at school, partly because there isn't too much of a home to go back to and Sam always sends him gifts in the mail - it's agonizing still, because he misses his brother - and partly because he stays at Sam's insistence. Nate wouldn't mind canned goods in a crappy motel somewhere, but at Hogwarts he's guaranteed food, lodging, and mild entertainment.

Sam will visit eventually, when he's not on the job.]

What a disaster.

I know, right? Don't know how we'll manage until term starts up again.

[ Rafe does his best to sound sincerely dour, ready to muddle through the holiday with a stiff upper lip and all that.

As if he's not all but vibrating at the chance to be away from his parents' constant needling. As if he's not raring to see what few secret corridors and passageways he and Nate haven't discovered yet, clamber around the parapets and towers at their leisure, and maybe find a few hours to take advantage of such private locations.

He knows Nate hasn't had the dubious luxury of choosing whether he stays or goes but that doesn't mean Rafe hasn't always envied him a little bit, the lack of strings tying him down. At least this time around, he'll be able to make the holiday what it ought to be for Nate and keep him from feeling too shitty and stifled. ]

Any ideas?

[Nate brightens, because even though he enjoys a lot of the class material they cover he always feels like there are historic plot holes that wizards aren't accounting for - blank spaces in the timelines that no one seems to care about but him.

Job-hunting seems a little moot when his intentions are to join his brother in freelance curse-breaking as soon as he graduates.]

Research! [he says, with the excited tone of someone who was just given precisely what they wanted for Christmas.] I mean, I was gonna- there's a lot of things I wanna get into before we leave school. The temples of the Aztecs, magical creature work...a-and, y'know.

[He gestures between the two of them.]
