[She nods, sighing softly as she leans back in her seat more.]

But that is the way the world works, isn't it? Anything worth having you must struggle to keep.

[walkingheroin]

Yes, but why is that? It seems a bit unfair, doesn't it?

[deathlessness]

Unfair, maybe.

[She pauses for a moment, before considering her words carefully before she speaks.]

But you value it more. When you have to work hard to keep something, it makes it harder to take it for granted. If you didn't care so much for it, then you would have stopped trying long ago.

[walkingheroin]

But what do you lose in the process? What is to assure you that you'll ever get what you actually want? The things that people are willing to do to get to that place, to keep what they think they deserve.

[deathlessness]

I think that is one of the things that every human struggles with. How far are they willing to go to keep what they want or do what they believe is right? Some go farther than others, are more willing to sacrifice lives if it means they get what they want.

[She looks down at her hands after a moment.]

I can't even say I'm innocent of that. Certain lines became meaningless to me a long time ago when I realized that I was the only one who was holding myself to any kind of moral standard - at least, in terms of the woman I was connected to.

We all have our burdens to bear, I suppose. It's not for me to tell others how they should carry them.

[It was simply his job to judge and punish depending on their choices. And now he's second-guessing even that.]

Humanity has decidedly rubbed off on me.

[deathlessness]

[She smirks a bit at that, because it's touch and go whether she considers herself human most days.]

They're surprisingly good at that. Forcing you to adjust your perspective, I mean. Sometimes having power can corrupt more than you realize, especially when you've lived with it for a long time.

They just care about the strangest things at times. It's both maddening and fascinating.

I think the same can be said of anyone, really. Our priorities in life are what defines us - no two people will be the same.
